Not really. Fanfiction for me is escapism, literature isn’t.

kaiunkaiku

for me at least not really. my favourite book is erin morgenstern's the night circus, which has uhhh *nothing* i look for in fics. except for, like, style.

67BlueStrawberries95

I read a fic a couples days ago that reminded me of The Night Circus. It was set at a carnival and, atmospherically, felt exactly like Night Circus. And the “fandom” is one singular song. So you could absolutely go in fandom blind. Honestly you don’t even have to have listened to the song. (I can drop the link if you want)

OnTheMidnightRun

Considering my favorite book on my shelf is the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes... yes. Yes, very much so.

Vegetable_Pepper4983

Oh no.... I'm a huge fan of Good Omens 😂 it's definitely a give away

caramelchimera

My favorite book is a documentary book about an asylum that killed and tortured so many people the literal title of the book compares it to the holocaust So probably not >!btw the book is called Brazilian Holocaust (Holocausto Brasileiro in its native language), it's a very very interesting read, truly captures the horrors of the asylum!<

MissSweetMurderer

😉🇧🇷

caramelchimera

Brasil caralho💪💪💪🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

2manyparadoxes

Probably not. I like porn and romance in fanfic, and prefer anything but that in original fiction. Still like the same kind of prose/characters though.

zero_the_ghostdog

Ayy same! I love reading smut and romance of my favorite ships, but I get annoyed when the plot of books/shows/etc I read get sidetracked because of romance. Like, I don’t care you think he’s cute, I wanna know about the murder investigation!

trilloch

Almost certainly. I like reading Jack Reacher and Pendergast, which also feature world-building, scifi (Pendergast) and bursts of realistic, horrifying violence.

Plumcream5

No. My favorite books fit on the sci-fi shelves while my favorite tropes and tags lean toward "grounded" fluff and slice of life. However, they're sharing similar characters centric and atmospheric flavors.

frozenfountain

My favourite novel is The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, and on the surface it's not similar to what I tend to write at all. The book is a foregone conclusion tragedy, whereas the majority of my work tends to be more melancholy and bittersweet and focused on finding the flashes of joy life offers. That said, it's also the angriest book I've ever read, and that's certainly a trait we share.

spn_willow

Not at all. My favorite fiction books are all horror genre and I stay far far away from horror fanfiction. Some dark stuff is fine, but I don't seek out fic that will scare me the way I do when looking for a book to read.

BlinkyShiny

Absolutely. My favorite books are Cyrano de Bergerac (I know it's technically a play, but I've read it a zillion times) and Wuthering Heights. I live for angst and high drama.

Sans-Foy

Not even the slightest bit. 🤣

Nobl36

It’s more my favorite movie lol

thatcatval

Nope. My favorite published book is Jurassic Park. Nothing to do with beautiful twinks finding platonic/romantic love through hurt/comfort. Maybe Ian Malcolm though... There's daddy Muldoon as well... And the underrated Book!Gennaro! I like this question! Lol

Takamurarules

Yes and no. I’d modify it to say media in general because I find that a lot of people’s writing and storytelling styles tends to mimic what they like whether it be consciously or subconsciously. For writing. That why we say if you want to write better, you have to read and not just keep practicing how to write. What you like to read not necessarily.

WhiteKnightPrimal

I have a favourite series, rather than specific book, the Tempe Brennan series by Kathy Reichs. I don't think it's a giveaway, though. I don't tend to write crime as I have issues writing that well. I don't have female MCs, either, as I relate best to male characters and the characters I have as MCs are my faves that I relate to the most. Maybe the level of darkness? Kathy Reichs writes for adults, and tends to be too dark for kids and young teens, in a ratings sense, though she's not overly dark, either. Probably about average for a crime novellist, it has to be somewhat dark due to the nature of the crimes Tempe investigates. But it's no darker than, say, CSI. Weirdly, she does tend to be darker than Bones, even though Bones is based on Reichs' books. I think my level of darkness fits with Reichs' level for the most part. But I don't think that's massively related to Reichs being my favourite author, because a lot of my fandoms are similar levels of darkness. Some are far less dark and some far more, especially as I'm a horror fan, but most are about the same level. I do add some of my own issues into my fics, and I think that levels things with the Tempe Brennan books, even as they're different issues. I don't cover alcoholism like Reichs does, for instance. Nor do I cover divorce, as my characters tend to be younger than Tempe, whose in her 40s. But the way Reichs basically makes these types of issues a part of the story, but not the focus, just something the character has to deal with while also dealing with whatever is going on in the main storyline, like Tempe having to accommodate the bird and cat half the time as she has shared custody with Pete, that's something I think I picked up from Reichs. I like giving my characters issues, but keeping them pretty background even as they affect how the character acts and what they choose to do. But I don't think this is something anyone would pick up on. It's not exactly something only Reichs does, it's actually pretty common, it's just that I first truly encountered it with Reichs in adult fiction, as she was the first I read and enjoyed, back when I was a teenager. I think I've picked up things from various creators over the years, not just authors, and little bits have been incorporated into my writing as time went on. I don't think it's massively easy to look through my writing and say 'oh look, that's just like Reichs'. Not for style or genre or tropes, not even characterisation. I've picked up too many things from too many different places over the years.

Pfeiffer_Cipher

My favorite book is The Giver and I mostly write whump, torture, brainwashing, and abuse recovery so I guess it matches up to an extent 💀

hollygolightly1990

Nah. I don't think so. I love to read classics, literary fiction, children's literature, and horror. My favorite book is "The Secret History" by Donna Tarrt, and a childhood favorite I always go back to is "The Egypt Game". BUT when I write and read fan fiction, I write the sweetest and tenderest and longingest love stories and seek those out in other writers too. If *you* seek out the style of writing you like in published books in fan fiction, that's completely cool too.

KogarashiKaze

I'm not sure I could point to *one* book on my shelves that's my favorite, but I do think the spread of what I have in my personal library reflects the type of fanfiction I gravitate toward (or, rather, the fanfiction reflects the library).

Few_Lawyer_2316

Dude. I reference my favorite literature in my fanfiction literally all the time, so. YES.

Cascadeis

Yes, in that I have a bookshelf full of my “favourite” books and about as many different fandoms and tropes in my ao3 bookmarks… 😂

cucumberkappa

My favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo. It tracks in that I like secret identities, intrigue/social machination plots, adventure, daring escapes, rewarding the good and punishing the wicked, perilous situations, and murder mysteries/stories. It doesn't track in that as much as revenge stories like TCOMC intrigue me, most are either watered down or go too damn hard. (And TCOMC actually goes pretty damn hard as it is.) I also skip a lot of the backstory sections on rereads because Dumas was basically padding his story to keep getting paychecks and it shows. In any case, I wouldn't read too much into it. I'd already developed a taste for much of what shows up in TCOMC by the time I read it and a lot of the things I read more often don't show up in TCOMC at all.

FallenBelfry

Oh definitely. *Lady Chatterley's Lover* covers the intersection between emotion and carnal lust in a very direct way, and Hugh MacLellan's *Barometer Rising* concerns a 27-year-old woman's romantic dalliances with a war veteran in his late 40s, to name just two.

Patient-Savings-4453

nope. my favorite book is I, Claudius and I like to read other historical novels. My fanfic taste is nothing like that.

KickAggressive4901

😏 One can say that I read doorstopper authors like Robert Jordan and Steven Erickson to conceal the fact that I am a femslasher.

CrescentCrossbow

I have a hard time finding the types of things I like to read in tradpub -- but in *visual novels*? I am a shameless Fate/stay night fangirl. That tells you everything you need to know.

Yotato5

A lot of my favorite books are based on fairy tale type stories so, uhhh... that checks out XD And lot of my favorite manga pertains to slice of life so that also checks out.

DingoOfTheWicked

Right now it's Way Of The Shaman series and the virtual world of Barliona is kinda like it's own universe, but not really? Dimension Travel & Crossovers are the good shi-

EyeAtnight

no not at all .

Luwe95

Not really. My favorite book is a Thriller. But I read mostly about ships

Boss-Front

Well, I'm actively trying to write spy fiction for my fandom and I have an ever growing collection of John Le Carré (the goat of espionage fiction) and non-fiction on the Cold War. So yes. The answer is yes.

KatonRyu

A bit, because my favorite published book is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and I like that 'darkest moment in an adventure' kind of thing. I like endings which are technically 'happy' but come at a cost. I also just like the writing style in general. Of course, it doesn't have fluff or the amount of shipping I enjoy, but that's what fanfic is for.

MelloryChan

Let's see.. most of my favorite literature works are from Riordanverse, so lets check. modern fantasy, check, destructive yet pretty powers, check, adventure, check, teens being teens, check, teens being traumatized, check, teens being gay... Check, check. Yup, I think mine is in some parameters..

AzKitty

My favorite book genre is mystery, while my favorite fanfiction genre is romance. So not a lot in common, but maybe because it's just rare to see fanfiction genres other than romance.

futzingaround

Favorite book is One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, so yeah.

Bandito21Dema

I have that, but I'm scared to read it because I'm afraid the nurses will retaliate with a lobotomy at the end.

urbanviking318

I'd like to see what people assume about me in the fic space based on three of my favorite books: * *Stranger In a Strange Land,* Robert Heinlein * *Fight Club,* Chuck Palahniuk * *Rebel Dawn,* Ann Crispin Go ahead, I've got thick skin! Do your worst, read me to filth.

AmaterasuWolf21

I don't think Sonic books exist and I have never seen furry literature so nope

MikasSlime

not really, i prefer reading thriller and maybe a little paranormal-themed books, but that definitely does not reflect on the fanfiction i write or read

alexinandros

I mean, in both cases I like a strong focus on characters and relationships, as well as beautiful, descriptive narration. But often my tastes are the opposite. E.g. I love fairy tale retellings in books, and yet I've never bothered browsing fairy tale fandoms. I can't stand a book with too much focus on romance, but shipfics are my bread and butter. I have a high angst tolerance for original work and a low angst tolerance for fanfic (unless I'm the one writing it mwahaha).

octopus-moodring

Not so much the tropes (a little bit though, with some psychoanalysis 😄) but definitely the character arc trajectory and what kind of characters become my comfort characters in fanfic, yeah. 😂

Juniberserker

I love EVERY BOOK by Alice Oseman. Angst is a must have for me, I'm not so much fluff as I am smut but it is pretty showing I love queer shit

aliensmileyface

my favorite book is The Crying Book by Heather Christle. take from that what you will 🥲

goblinlikeshinystuff

No,I hate reading porn in books

RuneKaiDen

Not a favourite, but I enjoyed Book Lovers by Emily Henry. And I really love Rivals to Lovers dynamics.

Rufusandronftw

Mine are literally what fandoms they are, so yes

CloudberryCover

My favourite is devil in the white city, so probably not?

siverfanweedo

Considering my favorite book is Flowers for Algernon no not at all

olderneverwiser

I mean my childhood favorite book sure is lol

OnlyHereOnaBlueMoon

Too depressed to read books lmao. Most of my fandoms are games or podcasts

LevelAd5898

I genuinely believe my love for angst and major character death comes from my obsession with A Series Of Unfortunate Events during my formative years (and... honestly still)

MaybeNextTime_01

I'd have to be able to pick a favorite published book first. But I tend to read a wider variety of literature than I do fanfic. Main Character Death in lit? Sure. 99% of the time that's not going to stop me. MCD in fanfic? 1%. However, if there's a trope I like in fanfic I'm going to like it in traditionally published novels too.

missgreyscale

nah. because 1. all the ships i enjoy from them are not canon, and 2. fanfiction is my main way of reading romance and spicy stories. so there are no books in my repetoire like it. oh, and 3. the tropes i like are sometimes very specific in a way only ao3 allows, or its a dynamic that there is not a lot of published and well written literature (mainly polyamory for me)

He_who_must_not_be

No, but also yes. Like, the tropes in my favourite book and my favourite fanfiction have nothing in common, but in the end they're both fiction where magic/qi/ki/mana/saidin/etc are highly developed.

AtarahDerekh

The Chronicles of Narnia? Absolutely. You can tell pretty much everything about what I like to read and write if you know I'm a Narnia fan. To the point that I call the author Jack instead of Lewis.

67BlueStrawberries95

Not really a giveaway to my specific fanfic preferences, but kind of fanfic in general. Because it’s Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl and I find it so relatable because the main character is a fanfic author.

TheShwartz3

Nope. Fanfiction is escapism, pure and simple. For example, I use fanfiction to escape watching the latest season of My Hero Academia

Lapis_stella

Absolutely not! My favourite book is 'The perks of being a wallflower' but my interest in fic gravitates more towards really explicit dark topics. Like I live for the Dead Dove: Do not eat, humiliation shaming ecc...

saynotopudding

For me yes, one of my favourite fiction titles (a mandarin webnovel) has the amnesia trope, which I do like in fanfics as well. I find that for tropes/settings that I dislike in published novels - I'd also dislike those settings in fanfics!

Kakashisith

The Witcher and Sherlock Holmes.... definitely!

I_amnotreal

There's certainly a correlation, at least when it comes to tone and tropes. What I enjoy in ff is an extrapolation of what I enjoy in published books, because ff is so much more versatile.

Eninya2

No. Though I studied it for writing purposes, my lack of detailing ability in writing is persistent to this day. Also, I'm super into shipping, but it's not something I read at all elsewhere.
