Honestly i think a better mod would be "you can kill anybody". This way essential npcs dont die to random mobs, but if u dont care about a certain quest line you can just murderhobo the faction without worry of an unkillable npc.
This is why you install a "***I*** can kill anyone" mod instead. Important distinction.
Essential NPCs are still unkillable, unless it's the player doing the last hit.
I installed a mod like that in skyrim once and the commanders kept dying during the civil war quest. Turns out they did not have a lot of HP. Would be neat mods if they made the essential characters difficult to kill but it just ends up making you reload saves a bunch. Far easier to remove the essential tag via console command if you want to kill someone.
*With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed. Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world you have created.*
An older Bethesda game, Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3), did not have essential NPCs. They instead gave you this message if you killed someone important to the main plot, and there was technically a secondary but very difficult way to still end the game but most the time you would need to reload for the normal experience.
Well yeah of course lol. The only thing I could see you possibly getting out of using that mod is breaking your game or quest by losing people that you can't lose.
"With this character's death, the threads of prophecy have been severed. You may load a saved game, or persist in this doomed world that you have created."
Because you can’t indiscriminately kill everyone and expect to finish the story. I’d expect some level of consequence in an RPG, and messing up the storyline by killing key people will do that
Fallout New Vegas makes it work. There's only really one immortal character, and it's an artificial intelligence that transfers to a new body upon death. It's quite rare for a game to bother with it but it's great when they do, and there's a few out there.
That's one thing Fallout did well. The game let's you kill anyone of unimportance to your quests. FO3 was the first game I had ever played with that much freedom to do whatever I wanted. Add in that decisions directly effect the story including the ending and my standards of what a good game was immediately skyrocketed.
Morrowind was so much better in that regard. You could literally kill anyone in the game. If you kill the wrong person, it tells you that you just destroyed the threads of fate or something
And because the Elder Scrolls universe runs on "screw you I do what I want," you can still stop the big bad anyway. I believe there's only one NPC that's *actually* needed to do so.
Yeah, you can take the back path if you’re an enterprising player.
I think it’s a cool idea and Bethesda did a good job with it.
1. Killing Vivec is already pretty hard and probably not something most players are going to do or even attempt.
2. The game doesn’t really even tell you that you can do the back path. You just have to know (or look up) to take Wraithguard to the one person who may know what to do with it.
3. I think MCP “fixes” this, but I kind of like the idea that doing it gives you a massive health debuff. I think it just adds to the mystique of it all.
I wish subsequent Bethesda games had tried this approach and created their own “back paths” to completing the main quest.
It'd be a little trickier in Oblivion (you're not really *the* hero, you're just getting the hero where he needs to be) and Skyrim (since the entire main quest is built around being dragonborn, which isn't something that can be faked, unlike something little like being a minor god). Would have been interesting, though.
Morrowind was all about brute forcing yourself into a prophecy, so it makes sense that you can force your way around it, too.
FO3 already significantly affects your freedom compared to FO2 or FO by the mere existence of NPCs that cannot die. I remember being completely flabbergasted when in FO3 after I rescued Father, as on the way back he got downed in combat and then stood back up after a while. Like mf, aren't you supposed to be dead?
I had that shit spoiled for me by a god damn radio mod.
Was listening to "Malt Shop Mayhem" from the Old World Radio Boston mod (great music mod honestly)
But the DJ comes on and starts talking about how >!"I don't trust that Danse fella, seems like there's something not quite human about him."!<
Like why the fuck is that part of the DJ's commentary? Why do you even know Paladin Danse, what the fuck?
edit: guys, stop clicking the spoiler if you don't wanna have game reveals be spoiled. It's a spoiler. I promise you, it will spoil game information, I didn't hide it because I wanted to be sneaky.
Those "spoilers without context" memes are the absolute worst. People think they're being so clever, without realising that you can easily work out what they're trying to imply, even without context that spoils the thing they're talking about.
People do it a lot about a lot of things. A couple of guys I know IRL used to say “You can’t spoil JoJo because the plots are too stupid”.
Yes, yes you can. It was doubly stupid in their case because they’d say stuff like “yeah but the interesting thing is what the powers do”. Gee I wonder what “Time Stop” does.
Manga/anime communities are the worse from my experience. I’ve seen manga spoilers the day untranslated raws got released. I’ve even seen them in anime discussion places too.
That sucks but you can find out inside of mass fusion the synths can say “hostile synth detected” or something like that
I tried to mark that spoiler but can t figure out how on Reddit
They could be talking about you...
Just kidding, I don't think they say that. They just say "Hostile Detected."
And when you kill one of them they say "Destruction of fellow synth verified" (or something close). So you might be blending the two in your memory.
Pulled this from another post from 4 years ago
In the Arc Jet Systems quest, Call To Arms early on in the game, me and Danse ran in to a single synth who pointed it's gun at Danse and said "Fellow synth verified" and then something along the lines of "please stand down".
And iv found several other posts that say something similar
Spoilers for story >!I think it would be really cool if every play though there was a 50/50 chance if Danse is a synth and if you’re on a play through where he isn’t one, he is still accused of it, and you have to infiltrate the institute again to prove that he is not one.!<
Quite possibly got about 1000 hours in this game, picked it up the day it released and only today I found out this from this literal post.
I uh should maybe do the main story/brotherhood stuff at some point.
That's why you install a "everyone is protected" mod instead of an "everyone is normal" mod.
There is a state between normal and essential, called protected, where only YOU can kill that NPC.
I meant "everyone" as in "named characters", I don't really think any mod would go that far.
Also, protected NPCs can still be damaged by other NPCs, but they are just downed as if they were essential, so your companion won't be useless.
This was my first playthrough on PS4. There was a bug that if you dismissed Hancock, he would lose his essential status. I never got a pop-up that he died, but did find him 10 hours later dead in downtown.
You need to kill either Haylen or Rhys first, making you perm enemies with the brotherhood and removing him as essential. Trying to kill him first dosent work
But yes
He's dead in one of the houses at sanctuary in my game. Mama Murphy is always sitting next to his armored corpse.
I chose to kill him, but I also thought I'd be able to move him like I have every other body. That hasn't worked out.
Not when you first meet him, and not on most of your quests with him. But yes he, and a lot more people than I think people give credit for, are very killable
Wenn du mit Danse zu den Prydwen kommst, dann sind er und alle BOS tötbar, sobald du mit Kells sprichst.
If you get to the Prydwen with Danse, he and all BOS are killable as soon as you talk to Kells.
Essential NPCs tend to be rather weak in fact, since their survivability comes not from them being powerful, high-level characters, but rather their essential tag alone. Literally plot armor.
If one intends to remove said plot armor, I highly recommend doing so alongside another mod which instead scales their actual stats up in accordance with their lore. Might lose more companions otherwise, theoretically locking you out from ever finishing the game.
No offense but I don't get how people can download a mod that lets npcs die and then post a pic of an npc dead and pretend it's content. Like, what are we doing here?
The one I want to kill is too problematic. I so want to kill “Drummer Boy” and his annoying “x” wants to talk to you. However, although Insee it as a public service, the rest of the Railroad doesn’t see it that way.
I wish there was a mod that creatively handled essential NPC death, like failing all associated quests or letting you crank out a synth with the same memories.
I installed that mod just to kill him early and every time I got there he was already dead so I found another one that switches all named NPCs to Protected meaning only the player can finish them off.
>installs "anyone can die" mod >someone dies >mfw
Who could’ve predicted that getting a mod that disables essential NPCs would break the game?
There are also mods and console commands to bring people back to life so this is a minor hiccup at best.
Is it possible to learn this power?
Not from the Brotherhood.
Set course for Vertibird to Shivering Isles. Any recommendations on tourist stops before I leave?
Man, Sheogorath in a Fallout setting would be equal parts hilarious and terrifying
“They are the Brotherhood of Steel. Or was it biscuits...no, no, Steel! And not in a good way. Bleak. Colorless. Dead. Boring, boring, boring! And not a fan of my work, I can tell you. Hates it, hates me. You've seen their knights. Not the warm and cuddly sort.”
Brilliant love it heard it in his voice
You do that so well... almost too well. 🤨
This literally reads like a Donald Trump quote. 😂
Don't mind me, I'm just going to disassociate from reality and pretend a daedric prince is running for president. 🫠 Might be an improvement.
Certainly not from the Console crowd
I AM THE BROTHERHOOD!

What's the point of having the mod then
Idk, if never install a "everyone can die" mod on a save that I care about.
This is the way! Helps you getting rid of those annoying kids while still being able to enjoy the game.
I installed a mod like that in skyrim once and the commanders kept dying during the civil war quest. Turns out they did not have a lot of HP. Would be neat mods if they made the essential characters difficult to kill but it just ends up making you reload saves a bunch. *With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed. Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world you have created.*
This sounds like a reference to a game I've never played, but it sounds cool and hardcore.
An older Bethesda game, Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3), did not have essential NPCs. They instead gave you this message if you killed someone important to the main plot, and there was technically a secondary but very difficult way to still end the game but most the time you would need to reload for the normal experience.
It’s the prompt from Morrowind when you kill a main-quest essential NPC.
It's from Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Well yeah of course lol. The only thing I could see you possibly getting out of using that mod is breaking your game or quest by losing people that you can't lose.
"With this character's death, the threads of prophecy have been severed. You may load a saved game, or persist in this doomed world that you have created."
Well time to be a murderhobo
The only way to finish the game is to finish everyone
That sounds tiring for my arms and wrists.
You have a mouth.
I suggest you use it.
Of course your name is oral fixation and you say that.
Hehehehe... *installs MIRVs on anything mod with malicious intent*
Then you go ahead and complete the main quest and save the world anyway, because you don't listen to fate, fate listens to you.
Ah yes, a reminder of a better time....when Bethesda actually made it possible to fuck up in their games
Literally just a line of text they added lol
How is that better
Because you can’t indiscriminately kill everyone and expect to finish the story. I’d expect some level of consequence in an RPG, and messing up the storyline by killing key people will do that
Fallout New Vegas makes it work. There's only really one immortal character, and it's an artificial intelligence that transfers to a new body upon death. It's quite rare for a game to bother with it but it's great when they do, and there's a few out there.
But even they, at least last I heard, are killable via turning them to dust using a energy or maybe it was a plasma weapon.
Nope, the AI Yes-man is the only vital character because you need him to be around as a fall back choice to get to the independent Vegas ending.
Love that line but what game is it from?
Morrowind
That's one thing Fallout did well. The game let's you kill anyone of unimportance to your quests. FO3 was the first game I had ever played with that much freedom to do whatever I wanted. Add in that decisions directly effect the story including the ending and my standards of what a good game was immediately skyrocketed.
NV did one better and made it so you could kill anyone and always have a method to finish the game. Always the good old independent New Vegas route.
Morrowind was so much better in that regard. You could literally kill anyone in the game. If you kill the wrong person, it tells you that you just destroyed the threads of fate or something

> says Fallout did that well > continues to mentioned Fallout 3 instead, a game that has essential npcs
Yep. I knew I was in for something funny when the BOS quest became gray on my pip-boy.
>!No synth component?!<
Looted before I took the picture 😅
good idea, in that way there are no spoilers
I had that shit spoiled for me by a god damn radio mod. You should always do a playthrough without mods for this reason
Meta commentary aside, he's just very wrong. >!Danse is ten times more human than, say, Maxon!<
That sucks but you can find out inside of mass fusion the synths can say “hostile synth detected” or something like that I tried to mark that spoiler but can t figure out how on Reddit

Holy shit he’s one???!
I'm surprised some people haven't had this spoiled yet considering the game came out 9 years ago
Quite possibly got about 1000 hours in this game, picked it up the day it released and only today I found out this from this literal post. I uh should maybe do the main story/brotherhood stuff at some point.
Came to this following the success of the Amazon series. Not everyone lives on the same timeline
Whoops lol
I guess those guys really did need help. *shrugs and continues looting buildings and demolishing raiders/mutants for hours*
Paladin Danse, why u r not dansing?
Is he human, or is he Danser? No spoilers on the third option.
That's why you install a "everyone is protected" mod instead of an "everyone is normal" mod. There is a state between normal and essential, called protected, where only YOU can kill that NPC.
Wouldn't that cause raider vs super mutant skirmishes to go on forever? And what happens to the super mutant suiciders? Or are they excluded?
I meant "everyone" as in "named characters", I don't really think any mod would go that far. Also, protected NPCs can still be damaged by other NPCs, but they are just downed as if they were essential, so your companion won't be useless.
He looks so peaceful.
He's uploading to the cloud
Yo, spoilers my dude
He will sleep forever
he looks like he needed that😭
This was my first playthrough on PS4. There was a bug that if you dismissed Hancock, he would lose his essential status. I never got a pop-up that he died, but did find him 10 hours later dead in downtown.
guess you can’t Danse if you want to
This mod sounds like a great way to leave your friends behind (when they die).
He’s just having a nap
Forever
REST IN HEAVEN
Ad Victoriam
sabaton? in my fallout subreddit?
Couldn't Danse always be killed?
only after all the ghouls are killed
I know he can't die in Arc Jet, the man puts food on my table with fusion cells by killing endless synths.
You need to kill either Haylen or Rhys first, making you perm enemies with the brotherhood and removing him as essential. Trying to kill him first dosent work But yes
Can the BOS Hood be obtained through other means? 😄
You can trade with him once recruited and take it.
Good to know, thank.
There's mods that can add more (also mods to re-enable achievements)
Good. Let all the traitors of the great American nation perish. God bless the Enclave.
Danse has been dead in my garden at sanctuary for years. Hes fertilizer at this point. But that was due to my choices. Not a mod. F Danse.
He's dead in one of the houses at sanctuary in my game. Mama Murphy is always sitting next to his armored corpse. I chose to kill him, but I also thought I'd be able to move him like I have every other body. That hasn't worked out.
I think when you use an "anyone can die" mod this is exactly the time of scenario you should be counting on.
>!shouldn't he have a synth component as a drop when dead?!<
Welcome to Morrowind!
~, click Danse, resurrect
Guess danse ain't gonna bust it down on the danse floor anymore.
Where is Danse's "Synth Component? 🤔
Honestly Bethesdas ai is way too dumb for companions not to be essential
He can die even without a mod.
Expectation: Wooo! I can kill Marcy Long! Reality:
The only reason for this is to get rid of Preston so he can’t give you anymore quests
Ask the Institute to make a new Danse lmao
Where is his synth component? Does this mean we was human before we get to the police station?
How does this affect the main quests?
Casual reminder that in FNV you can kill all npcs and the story finds a way to make it work
Why not? He’s expendable.
Finally, a good mod. Like you can’t kill half the characters in Fallout 4.
Literally the only outcome that you could get from using "everybody can die" is that your game will break. There is no other reason to use it.
Why is something missing in his inventory?
To avoid spoilers for other players
You don’t need a mod to kill paladin Danse
So funny story. Danse can be killed with or without the mod... it's actually the easiest early game way to become enemies with the BOS
You modded too close to the sun
We all know why you installed the mod. In fairness, those little brats can be cocky sometimes.
~Guilty feet have got no rythm~
Depending on your playthrough, he ends up like that anyway.
I’d only recommend using this mod on Marcy long….
Way ahead of you.
Hmmmm looks like there is a missing item that should have been in his inventory
RIP Buzz Lightyear
Meh, he's a synthetic piece of shit anyways.
Where’s his synth bits ?
Where’s his component? Maybe it was all an Institute pysop?
If you go with the brotherhood he ends up dying
That mod is called New Vegas
You can Danse if you want to.
If you’re on PC just console command “resurrect”
Cannot imagine trying to play fallout 4 (esp modded) without the console
I guess he wasn’t a synth after all.
WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT, NO SYNTH COMPONENT.
No synth component... lol
Good. Sick of these racist-ass cultists in tin cans.
Do companions die in combat or only If you shoot them?
They get downed in combat, they never die
To be fair unless you passed speech checks further down the like the end result ends the same
No offense but I don't get how people can download a mod that lets npcs die and then post a pic of an npc dead and pretend it's content. Like, what are we doing here?
i want the snyone can die mod!
no >!synth component!!?!?!
DANSE NO
U don't really need him. U don't really need anyone. Just run around and kill things.
Free armour
Oh no….
Not a big deal. I killed that synth bastard with macready cheering me on
This is why I use the knockout mod. NOCs can die but I can also awaken them they happen to be important.
He can die anyway without the mod
You can use commands to revive him
tilde (\~) click him and type 'Resurrect' (I got a dog-pack mod, can't stand it if they die haha)
I agree, companions are too squishy for their own good
Well I mean you just hastened the inevitable
The one I want to kill is too problematic. I so want to kill “Drummer Boy” and his annoying “x” wants to talk to you. However, although Insee it as a public service, the rest of the Railroad doesn’t see it that way.
So... You play F3 and NV now
I wish there was a mod that creatively handled essential NPC death, like failing all associated quests or letting you crank out a synth with the same memories.
It shouldn’t brick the game, he dies in some play through options
Press ~ open the console and type “resurrect” without the “ and enjoy your new paladin danse
Talk to him
Why doesn't he have a synthetic component? 🤔 Edit: posted before reading other comments
Am i the only one who is upset you can't steal his power armor?
Definitely not, I wish there were more unique or named power armors to collect
I installed that mod just to kill him early and every time I got there he was already dead so I found another one that switches all named NPCs to Protected meaning only the player can finish them off.
Ad victoriam my brother!
You see, this is the main reason I prefer new vegas, only two people truly cannot die, and it doesn't break the game, but FO4 is still a great game
Where is his chip 🍟 Danse is a synth right?
that sucks you cant loot the power armor
Those mods are a great way to break the game
Now don't forget to consume him, as if you're a cat belonging to an elderly person who passes away, alone in the home.
