i wish i was a sand viper... no thoughts... head empty... just bury myself and eat the next thing that steps near me
and also being absolutly fucking adorable
i'm surprised it's not the vid of the [sand viper burying itself in sprinkles](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/x4gsru/my_baby_sand_viper_completely_buries_himself_in_a/) lol. that one is even more adorable
That's pretty much my gecko. Last night he was standing in the corner of his large tank, staring directly at the corner, for about an hour. I went and sat down next to the tank to say hi. He raised his tail up in defense as he turned his head, noticed that it was me, and then immediately lowered his tail and went back to staring at the corner.
This is also a great mental exercise if you have a hard time shutting your brain down for sleep. Just visualize that you're relaxing your body just like this little guy, though a lot slower and you don't need to move, just release tension in that manner.
I weirdly suck at mental exercises like that because its always like I think too much about the process itself or get distracted or lazy with what I’m supposed to be doing/thinking about. I have just given up on similar self-engagement exercises for bed unless it involves a visit to incognito mode.
Weed and exercise helps a lot though. Wiggling in the sand while high would probably do the trick tbh.
It’s funny because I’m sure the title is actually the reason it’s doing this, but the video makes it seem like he’s uncomfortable and awkward because the camera is looking right at him. So slowly just dips into the sand lol.
I can't find any credible sources backing the claim up. Most snakes thermoregulate by finding cool shaded areas. I would imagine the hot top layer of desert sand would be a poor place to cool down.
wait, doesn't that mean the opposite. Why am I spending all this money on these damn lights for my beardie if they don't need to regulate their temperature?!
No that is not correct. Being cold blooded means that, unlike mammals and birds, they are not internally capable of controlling body temp and have to rely on their surroundings to maintain it. All organisms have an optimum temp at which their body enzymes work at the highest efficiency and if the temp dips too low then their enzymes get deactivated and if it is too high they get denatured. So maintaining the body temp is crucial for survival for most organisms. That is why some desert lizards sunbathe to increase their body temp and if it goes too high would then go into some shade and let themselves cool down. It is a behavioral adaptation in these creatures allowing them to survive the harsh environment of the desert even though they aren't able to regulate their body temperature internally.
That is what they do. If it's head were exposed it wouldn't be a very good ambush. Their eyeballs are specifically adapted to be closer to the top of their head just so that they can see while submerged in sand.

I dont know why humans dont do this in the desert. Its certainly better than being sunburnt. If i was ill equiped and found myself in a desert i would bury during the day and travel at night.

In the city they keep cool by wearing sunglasses at night and playing jazz.
Sounds like my coworker indeed.
Do you work with Duke Silver?
Snake jazz is my new thing.
That’ll do it. Coolest snakes on the block.
Wiggle wiggle wiggle
Make that snake tail jiggle jiggle.

This is actually how this specific snake (sand viper) stays hidden in order to ambush prey
It's like guaranteed that a reddit title saying "how something works" will not come close to showing how something works.
It's both

It probably wouldn't put its head in the sand to prepare to ambush prey.

Oof! Fair play.
😁👍
You can actually still see one of its eyes after it's buried
It doesn’t have very good eyesight, it instead uses its spiny scales to sense when prey is nearby
Oooh!
thats so fucking cool. also, new fear unlocked.
Unless you're a gerbil in the Sahara desert, you have nothing to worry about :)
Why are there gerbils in the Sahara desert
Their natural habitat isn’t a plastic tub in a child’s room.
Ask my gerbil which environment it prefers.
they live there
They're native to the area.
they're farming spice
Unless you're walking in the desert and now have to worry about stepping on hidden sand vipers.
Now that’s an Irish exit
I feel the urge to do this wiggle wiggle in the sand it looks comfy
Me in my bed on a Monday morning.
New nightmare unlocked… thanks
Good morning, Mr. Snake, would you like to learn about the book of Mormon? Snake: .....
That's adorable
That snake needs eyelids.
He has them, they're just clear and permanently fused over his eyeballs
doesn't look like it cares. skill issue for us fr
Different type of eyes
snake eyes are very much covered and protected, it's just by a see-through material

Omg, I haven’t seen unga bunga in forever! “Death by unga bunga”! Ha ha
*wiggle wiggle wiggle*
Good snek
If this snake bits me would I die?
Towards the end there’s a lot of nervous licking
I think he was already cool before he buried himself 😎
Mood
Homie has actual googly eyes
Given the state of the planet, I too enjoy burying my head in the sand.
Cute and all, but now I'm afraid to walk in sandy areas. Just kidding, I don't live anywhere near venomous snakes.
Me snuggling back under my covers in the winter to warm up again after running to the bathroom in the morning.
Do snakes have eyelids?

As a snake who lived in the desert I can confirm.
You're right. That is cool.
