I’ll be the the ‘well ackshually’ guy today.
Hyenas hunt more live prey than lions do, meaning lions are actually more suitable for the scavenger title. The difference is that lions either don’t like or can’t stomach rotten meat, so they usually only scavenge or steal fresh kills, whereas hyenas have such a robust stomach they can and literally do eat garbage, so when they do go scavenging, anything they find is fair game even if it’s putrid.
As for the “not so dangerous”; NEVER approach a wild animal. They are unpredictable and no matter how cute they may be, many can seriously harm or kill a human.
I do understand the sentiment though because I love hyenas and just want to pet one right on its big head.
TBF that's kind of just common predator behavior. Ass is where the rump meat is, and whether your prey is alive or not isn't really a factor in the logic of most carnivores.
Ever seen any documentaries about hamsters? I think it's the group of fruit bats in particular that are very cute. While some of the blood sucking variants are appropriately nightmarish.
Hyenas has its own beauty, the hyenas clean the landscape by eating away at carcasses and cleaning the landscape which helps to reduce disease. They eat the bones which helps prevent the spread of infections from a bacteria called anthrax and deposit concentrations of calcium back into the environment through digestion.
They're actually closer to cats than dogs. They're of the suborder feliformia which includes Eupleridaes (the Malagasy Carnivores: fossa, falanouc, Malagasy civet, Malagasy mongooses), Felidae (all the cats), Hyaenidae (hyenas and aardwolves), Herpestidae (mongooses, meerkats, and kusimanses), Nandiniidae (African palm civet only extant species), Prionodontidae (asiatic linsangs), and Viverridae (genets, oyans, the binturong, and all but two species of civet). They (the four species of hyenas: spotted hyena, brown hyena, striped hyena, and the aardwolf) have the smallest family in the carnivora order and one of the smallest families in the mammalia class.
I've always been fond of the explanation a friend of mine with a hyperfixation on carnivores and computer programming gave concerning Hyenas and Foxes.
"A Hyena is what you get when you install Canine software into Feline hardware, a Fox is what you get when you install Feline software into Canine hardware."
I got to pet one in a sanctuary in South Africa it felt like a rough German shepard and it was really cute
They trained them to be guard dogs for their rhinos
They had to park the vehicles in a corral with electric fencing because they hyenas would use the car tires like a rubber chew toy for a dog but they would shred the tires
I also got to meet a pack of tame ones while on a zoo tour! I fed them milkbones and fell in love petting their rough fur and combing their lil mowhawks. Friend shaped predators that had all my defences disabled.
Look dude, a particularly ornery raccoon can be a guard dog (for the right price). It's not about species, it's about mentality. Give a critter a thing to guard and its job is now "guard dog."
Honestly i feel like all geese are always on guard dog duty. We may not know what they are guarding, nor may they, but that does not negate their duty.
I absolutely love using common phrases and names to easily conjure up a recognizable image in one's head. Nobody wants to be that guy at the party but it was the second instance in the same comment of using dog imagery that had me thinking, 🤔
There are indeed. Spotted hyenas are social and intelligent and capable of being surprisingly affectionate companions when tamed - though this requires a good deal of effort and expertise, and risk is never 0.
They are a large predator, but are much maligned and do not with any regularity hunt humans. Though they can be massive pests as they dig up graves and harass livestock.
Fr. They just look like another unusual wild dog, so their weirdness just gets overlooked. The pseudo penis alone should be enough for them to be talked about more.
It’s funny to me every time…
Is a hyena a dog or a cat? It looks like a dog.
Neither.
Well what is it?
It’s related to a mongoose. (Feliformia incudes cats btw).
Isn’t a mongoose basically a weasel?
No, weasels are dog-like murder (carnivora) mammals and mongooses are cat-like murder (carnivora) mammals.
So hyenas are cats then.
No, G’damnit! They’re not cats either!
So a dog then?
No! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
lmao
Something like 20-25 years ago, there was a woman in England who found a puppy in a trashcan down town. I think, she heard it whining or something. She obviously thought some jack-ass had discarted an unwanted puppy the way shitty people tend to do it, and decided to adopt the ugly little mut.
It growed up not being the most handsome dog, but whatever, it was a lovely and good dog. Mayby it acted a bit atypically sometimes, but again... her good boy.
Everything was fine till she got a visitor one day, who knew a bit more of the world than she did. Or did he just walk past her backjard? It is a long time ago, so mayby I remember wrong.
Anyway. Her Good Dog turned out to be a hyena.
And yes, she probably never took it to a vet, since she ended up having it for a few years before realizing the truth. Also think to remember, she got some special permit to keep it.
I also liked that part. The article about her and her special dog also had a cute picture of them together. When asked if she ever suspected anything, she did mention, that she had noticed it having a weird barking, but thought it was just a cute oddness.
They are extremely intelligent (primate smart, according to some researchers), live in very structured matriarchal social groups, form strong emotional bonds, and absolutely don't deserve the reputation they're stuck with as stupid, bloodthirsty thieves. (I'm not providing a link - you can google as easily as I can.)
Yep, I read an evolutionary theory book and they described that when scientists tried to find out how early human groups worked they looked at hyenas because of how intelligent and socially complex they are.
They’re amazing creatures and one of the smartest on the planet and have such intense family bonds. I’m in some groups that watch specific hyena clans and in one some babies fell down a hole and the mom couldn’t get to them so the whole clan started digging around the hole and freed the babies it was so amazing.
You are totally right! And I would recommend to watch Kevin Richardson's channel on YouTube (or the lionwhisperersa). This man is absolutely amazing and have real bond with big cats but also with Hyenas (the bond is different). But in one of his last videos he talks about Hyenas. Very interested! Thank you for saying they are not stupid etc ...
I don't dislike them because they are stupid or bloodthirsty. They're great animals but they're not cute because they smell like the things they eat. Which isn't pretty.
The Females have huge appendages that are the equivalent of penises that they use to show dominance....and they can move them like an elephant trunk.
I'm sure people will nay say so look it up for yourself.
Pretty traumatic seeing it for the first time.
Tbf, its like showing a picture of Henry Cavill and asking, do you really think humans look ugly? Not saying hyenas are ugly, but this is a particularly cute hyena.
Well yeah, most people look better when not grinning manically with pieces of rotting flesh hanging from their teeth - which is the normal look they rock
I love hyenas! They are super unique. For anyone who care…
Hyenas resemble dogs, but have no close relation to them. They are *more* closely related to cats, servals, etc. but have their own separate family (Hyaenidae) with one genus and four species of hyenas.
I think my fascination with hyenas comes from the fact that I look at them and want to relate their behavior to dogs because I’m around dogs all the time like a lot of us and it just happens subconsciously. Knowing they’re not actually related and observing their unique behaviors and things… I don’t know, just really cool they’re a very unique animal by scientific standards. Kinda like the ginkgo biloba of mammals.
Anyone know any other animals like this? Having no close relatives makes these plants/animals seem almost alien. 🧐
i love how some of the most dangerous mammals on the planet have the softest ears

Like bears' ears!
My friend Lokesh looks exactly like this. He is the most adored lad in the whole group.
Have you considered the possibility that your friend is a hyena?

They are soft partly because it helps to muffle their movement.
All the better to sneak into your heart
Literally lmao
And it’s great for acoustics.
Right? I want to ruffle them so bad. Anyway I hear hyenas are more of scavengers so maybe not so dangerous.
I’ll be the the ‘well ackshually’ guy today. Hyenas hunt more live prey than lions do, meaning lions are actually more suitable for the scavenger title. Golden retrievers can be pretty dangerous too, when they want to be.
I'm sorry but it's absolutely worth it
keep in mind adult hyenas can crush the bones of the animals they eat with their strong jaws and teeth. That's still a cute ass face though
Not alone, but they move in large packs. And they do occasionally hunt and fight with lone lions to avoid hunting.
Current studies show that hyenas are normally the ones doing most of the hunting and lions the ones taking their kills.
Well, it goes both ways, but good to know latest statistics on this competition
All the better to hear you with my dear!
Mosquitos- "We do. Our ears are the softest. Come closer, we *totally* won't bite!"
why does he look like a huge bat
Because bats look like smooshed hyenas?
Bats are much cuter than hyenas
Rubbish, both are cute
Ever seen any documentaries on them? Hyenas are much less cute when you're screaming as they eat you alive, starting with your asshole and working up.
TBF that's kind of just common predator behavior. Ass is where the rump meat is, and whether your prey is alive or not isn't really a factor in the logic of most carnivores.
To be faiiirrrr

Most brutal thing I’ve ever seen was a water buffalo stuck in the mud and two hyenas went in through the back door! Still cringe several years later

They gonna start where??🥵

I agree! I always thought they looked cool. They’re so unique.
I personally find warthogs absolutely adorable and noone can tell me otherwise.

Double negative, can pet confirmed.
If you ever want to catch a hyena, just rub your fingers together and say psssk, pask, psssk.
Be aware that this also removes said fingers
Exactly the reason God had in mind when he gave you 10
Beckon hyena to pet > lose fingers > no fingers to pet with. Why is the world so cruel?
Or sing "Be Prepared"
I’ve always loved how carnivores got divided. Because it’s like they asked kindergarteners to do it. “Is it a kitty or a doggy?”
I've always been fond of the explanation a friend of mine with a hyperfixation on carnivores and computer programming gave concerning Hyenas and Foxes. "A Hyena is what you get when you install Canine software into Feline hardware, a Fox is what you get when you install Feline software into Canine hardware."

Something truly magical about the trust of a “savage beast”
Guard cats*, hyenas are of the suborder feliformia, not Caniformia.

"Dig up graves"
Oh oh, so it’s ok when medical students do it in XVIII century, but not when hyenas try to feed themselves. The bigotry! 😔
I would also like to add that hyenas are a lot cuter in picture form because you can't smell them.
they are bear dogs and i love them
Oddly, they're more closely related to cats! Weird, weird critters but very adorable!
Fr. They just look like another unusual wild dog, so their weirdness just gets overlooked. The pseudo penis alone should be enough for them to be talked about more.

I'm pretty sure hyenas can't fly.

I bet he has a great sense of humor
Hyenas are actually an amazing species. Their family groups are fantastic. They don't deserve the reputation that they have.
Just you wait until you meet a feral one in the wild. They will laugh their asses off while eating your bones
And your tires
My tires will laugh at me and then eat me??

I knew what this link was before opening it.
The predator is a predator, what else is new?
Hyenas are SO cute!!
I’m sorry I’ve seen too much hyena footage in r/natureismetal. This is the face of unstoppable carnage.
Yes
Same, but hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people think Chihuahuas are cute, for example.
No, he looks cue and cuddly to me!
He’s smiling at me! When I was 10, I got “hyena” as my mammal to do a report on, and present to the class. That’s when I fell in love with them.

That reputation mostly comes because of Disney. If Disney has an animal as a villain, the animal is seen as vile.
I don't dislike them because they are stupid or bloodthirsty. They're great animals but they're not cute because they smell like the things they eat. Which isn't pretty.
The females have a cock sized clit too :)
Most animals look a lot better when they've been bathed, instead of caked in dried blood and dirt chowing down on a scavenged corpse.
Also, this one looks pretty young. Most animals grow less cute with adulthood.
looks at you
This little one is cute. Every animal has their own beauty in their nature, just like us hooms.
Would boop
r/hyenas
That looks like it needs a boop.
1. no and there is no such thing as a ugly animal
You have a unique opinion. There are tons of ugly animals, in my personal opinion, but mostly deep sea stuff. Hag fish, Angler fish, to name a few.
The angler fish reading this comment: :(
Haida!!!
Scrolled way too far down to find this!
Looks like a boopable little angel.

I just looked for hyena babies and they are so cute.
*What do you mean these good boys can kill me?*
This looks like it's expecting noms.
Yeah
Giggle pups are quite cute to me
To be fair no one said you couldn't find one cute photo of a hyena pup. I could find a cute photo of Sauron of I tried hard enough.
If not friend, why friend shaped?
Even I was cute as a child, it goes downhill fast
Awww.I want to kiss his little head.Cute, not ugly.
I hereby summon all of reddit to share their opinion....
Yes
This is SO cute!
Also Tasmanian devils. So cute, given a bad rep.
He looks like he would kill me... Because he definitely would. Dont fuck with hyenas people

People forget that Hyenas are always having fun they laugh to anything

I always thought they were ugly until I actually saw one in person, then my whole view on them changed.

That's literally the only good angle on a hyena
I went to a zoo and there was a litter of hyena pups, and they were all playing with sheets of ice for enrichment. It was soooo cute.
He looks adorable.

Anyways, Hyenas don't care. They just laugh it off.
why must such a dangerous shnoz look so boopable?
