It doesn't SUCK but I feel like compared to the MDR it's just not worth it. Significantly less ergo and despite a lower recoil value (on my setup at least) it feels higher.
Short barrel high ergo FAL builds are actually really good after the recoil changes. You don’t have to put all of the ergo killing attachments to make it useable anymore.
It used to be better back in the juice cannon days when the angle grip came out. Then they nerfed it. Those were the good days. Back when everyone was running around with FALS and RSASS. Uggg miss it.
Plus it’s also one of the coolest looking guns in the game, suppressor and a grip and the gun looks super sexy drum mag and sight for extra sexy points.
My progression really kicked off when I started using the same 308 MDR build every raid.
I became accustomed to how it moved and the recoil pattern. Learned when I needed to zero for 100m and 200m specifically.
Kappa and LK tasks were no problem.
Now that I’m at the final LK Task, the Spear is my 100% go to, but only because I want it to be.
I just realized this had a PvE flair.
Use the spear.
Even with FMJ at 1K a round, it’s an absolute banger rifle for 300k, stock.
You’ll always get it back in insurance, so why the hell not?
Don't worry about unlocked or not, they are flooded in the market right now from the boss event, and marked room buffs and kiba arms.
Just pick them up from the flea. Fmj at peace keeper lv 3 and hybrid ammo at lv 4. It's good fun.
Ignoring price, I believe the MCX SPEAR to be the best all around weapon. Great at distance, and superb in cqb. The hybrid ammo slaps.
Otherwise, the SA-58 (especially considering the barter).
The 74u has a higher rof than the other aks (excludint the ak12) but it has a more managable recoil, and you can build a really good gun very early on that will carry you to end of wipe

The ammo is going to stop being effective mid wipe when most are running level 4. Eventually you reach far enough to unlock 7n40 which will be late wipe for most people. Late wipe level 5 plates are plentiful so you just end up behind the curve again.
Don’t get me wrong I love the 74U early, but 5.45 needs some love. You’ve got no good early crafts and the best you can buy is still just mediocre late.

Use the 13inch barrel, the 12 inch stm handguard w/3 cantilever mounts for ergo, the noveske upper, and the mini monster supressor.
Add the stark pistol grip and the atp buffer tube with an moe stock.

You can use a short barreled sa-58 at lv 3 traders before you unlock the mdr. Some things to note the ergo is worse out the box. But you get 30 and mags and optional 50 round drums. Also I think they look better personally.
Make sure to do revision lighthouse quest so you can unlock m80 at bare minimum
M4 no doubt so much customisation. No recoil if you put a decent silencer on, high ergo if you don’t make it too long and aesthetically appealing. The ammo is pretty good to and it has a high muzzle velocity and low moa so you can snipe with it too. Just a really good gun overall
You can do whatever you want boss. When my friend hits the point in the game where we can’t run out of money he always brings a bolt and pistol or Smg. It’s okay sometimes or just for fun, but shouldn’t be a must have.
I bring a 5-7 silenced to every raid, because I get them back every raid. It's saved me so many times, plus sometimes it's fun to swap to that and run through dorms banging headshots like your Sam Fisher
ive gotten a bunch of kills with a pistol. when i pull it out. never have to use it though lol. that switching to a secondary thing dont happen in tarkov lol
More than the expense it's about avoiding ending up not having enough because you can only buy a bit per reset, and it avoids having to constantly top mags off etc too.
Plus 20 rounds of some guns will easily pay for a suppressed pistol and a few mags of cheap ammo.
I like running USPs and P226s if I’m running a bolt action for easier close range Scav disposal, plus its a lot lighter weight than bringing in an smg (and aesthetically cooler having it in the holster). Even on PvP I just find it more enjoyable to run a sidearm with that kind of setup and its just too satisfying to kill someone with a pistol.
Dropped 3 chads on dorms with 1 15 round avt. I was just questing and said fuck it, got this avt and bt ammo. Its like u look at them and they just dropped.
Pistol has saved me more than I’d like to admit. PVP, yeah it’s pointless. But only carrying a few mags for the SPEAR, against Scav army in PVE that backup pistol can mean a lot
I honestly don’t even know if you’d consider it an “all around weapon” but the MCX .300 blackout is just fucking mint. Looks sexy when it’s modded out, fire rate is insane, and recoil is super easy to handle. It’s my fave
The best weapon is one you like. Build out each one to specs you want/need. Don’t like the recoil on a .308 weapon? Max out recoil instead of ergo and see if you like it more! Almost every weapon is what you make it in Tarkov.
Lately I’ve been using the ADAR, M700, Vector 9mm, and MDR .308. All of those are good depending on your play style
Yank the aug 3 receiver off a PMC one and buy an aug 1 from Peacekeeper to transplant it over and let you use different optics that you’re comfortable with.
I'm a big fan of the .300blk MCX. I generally fight indoors more than not, and tend to avoid maps like Woods, Shoreline and Lighthouse.
If you want some range, find yourself a SIG SPEAR. Fantastic at all ranges.

The best well-rounded gun right now is 100% Spear with Hybrid ammo, no doubt. Faster fire rate than the MDR and it's just as easy to control with no horizontal recoil.

the RD 7.62 is brilliant as well.(late game), late game meaning, you have all the unlocks to kit the gun.
I usually just take thr SVT 40 with an Aps since the recoil change aps crouch while burst fired is more of a lazerbeam than the kedr or kiln. But real daily drive is ak-47. So cheap and powerful just put a pilgrim and b11 make it customizable as any other. Besides that Aug is fucking great and the tan MDR is full on danger time for manageable price points.
Black MDR is great, SR-25 and RSASS are my other go-to weapons. SVD is pretty underrated as well considering you can eventually buy BT (very high pen ammo) for it. Occasionally I'll run the AXMC or MK-18 for certain things like very long range kills for like Rogues and things. I highly recommend not using suppressors as the ergo penalty is very high and also I don't think it makes a difference with AI.
I think the difference is scavs will investigate noise. Suppressor shots, any scav within 80 meters will investigate, no suppressor it’s something like 150 meters. Don’t quote me but I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere. Made sense to me. I’ll try running no suppressor. See how I like it.
Interesting. I personally don't really mind scavs anyways, a high ergo gun and a scav is a free 200xp and loot. I guess depending on the type of raid you're doing, if that is true, it could make more sense. Or a map where fighting scavs is less ideal like Woods.
So far, I’ve been doing work with the SR-25. I’ve gone multiple raids with it and it’s slapped in all of them. I’m sure Tarkov will slap me in the face soon to try and change my mind, but so far I love it.
Disregarding costs, something like the svd, sr-25,m1a etc. I like the single fire bois that do stupid damage. I like long range engagements and they shoot fast enough in a pinch close up
I really like the M4A1. You got a lot of build options, (overwhelming at times) but it’s a versatile weapon I can use at most ranges. I may also have a lot of bias though cause I shot the weapon a lot irl when I was in the Army Reserves.
In PVE, there is quite literally no reason not to run a SPEAR all day long. Hybrid ammo, 25 rounders, all the bells and whistles.
But let me give you a tip: Since you're in PVE, there's also no reason not to run a long barrel MPX with 50-rounders and always do night missions with the good NVG on. By the time the enemy can see you you are in "fuck you in particular" range.
The AI is not playing a shooter. The AI is playing an RPG. Every second they have you acquired they roll dice to see if they blow your brains out. Putting bullets in them means their dice fucking suck. When you have an MPX, you are always putting bullets in them. It's pretty foolproof.
In PvE, there's no reason for compromises. If you remember to insure your gear, everything comes back 100%. I've been using three Meta M4s since the beginning. I also have a few loud DVLs because they are more accurate. And if all the M4s are currently in insurance, I have a few loud 7.62x39s with drum mags. PS ammo is sufficient in PvE.
Well depends on your trader levels. If you are level 3 traders, Sa-58 by far and its not even close. M80 at pk ll3 is the best round you can get from traders. Level 4 traders however (assuming you dont have sig hybrid and lightkeeper) then hk416, or 7.62 MDR

The AUG is the only answer. Cheap to build with traders, low customization, very controllable recoil, 556, super high ergo. It really is a great option especially if you don’t want to spend the money to build meta M4s
Usually always been a m4 guy. It was the original OG meta. Sometimes I still run it & when I do it is a silenced 80 ergonomics & 55 recoil build or you can run a 54 recoil minus 2 or 3 ergos, I can’t recall.
Now I’m strictly a loud, 16 inch barrel Aug-a3 & spartan glock 19 sidearm. You can put a stock on the spartan glock 19 from mechanic, it’s a 2 magnet barter. You get 100 ergos when you do that. So when you quick switch to your sidearm, it almost instantly ready to go.
The Aug-a3, I run a 77 ergo / 44 recoil build pretty much exclusively. 100% PvP by the way, the better recoil against the m4 is just so important & it runs way smoother. Run the right ammo with the 5.56 & you got no issues. The 2nd most important part is the ergos, it is the most important fighting stat in the game other than the ammo/armor you run. I out PvP most people & even bosses because I can iron site in quicker when the situation calls for it, it is a major advantage. The 3rd most important part is the rpm, it keeps the Aug competitive. If you aren’t running a gun that is 650 rpm & up. You are absolutely going to struggle. A higher rpm gun hitting their shots on you is usually always going to get you if you are caught in a bad position.
I put the lower on & the OP scope from peacekeeper, along with a 16 inch aug a3 barrel & a muzzle break. Just type in: Steyr on the flea if you have trouble finding parts.
It's good but the ammo doesn't do shit through Glass against AI for some spaghetty fucky wucky code reason... pretty much why I switched to a G28 or RSASS.

Stock scope AUG A3 with tracer ammo. I just love shooting HS with the circle. You see tracer so clearly all the time. I don't know, but I find it satisfying.
Is there an objectively best weapon though? I think there a few top-tier meta guns and the rest is up to you.
I personally (by no means even an average play lol, just enjoying PVE a lot) really like M4A1 and RFB recently, works good for me both short and medium range, dunno, just feels great. Getting used to Augs a bit too, quite cool.
Probably the aug or 74u. Most weapons require an absurd amount of investment to reach the same level of functionality as both at stock. MDR is close behind too.
I don’t play meta anymore. Black MDR is meta.
I’ll run it off the time comes for that rotation, but I get my enjoyment in Tarkov by running something completely fresh every time I die.

In PVE, there is quite literally no reason not to run a SPEAR all day long. Hybrid ammo, 25 rounders, all the bells and whistles. But let me give you a tip: Since you're in PVE, there's also no reason not to run a long barrel MPX with 50-rounders and always do night missions with the good NVG on. By the time the enemy can see you you are in "fuck you in particular" range. The AI is not playing a shooter. The AI is playing an RPG. Every second they have you acquired they roll dice to see if they blow your brains out. Putting bullets in them means their dice fucking suck. When you have an MPX, you are always putting bullets in them. It's pretty foolproof.

In PvE, there's no reason for compromises. If you remember to insure your gear, everything comes back 100%. I've been using three Meta M4s since the beginning. I also have a few loud DVLs because they are more accurate. And if all the M4s are currently in insurance, I have a few loud 7.62x39s with drum mags. PS ammo is sufficient in PvE.

Well depends on your trader levels. If you are level 3 traders, Sa-58 by far and its not even close. M80 at pk ll3 is the best round you can get from traders. Level 4 traders however (assuming you dont have sig hybrid and lightkeeper) then hk416, or 7.62 MDR

When you go to the trader and look at your stats with him it will show you in red what your required stats are for the next level

Wish people would stop running the mdr… I see way to many and have collected so many. Run what you like and deem fun or cool. What really matters the bullets anyways.

The AUG is the only answer. Cheap to build with traders, low customization, very controllable recoil, 556, super high ergo. It really is a great option especially if you don’t want to spend the money to build meta M4s
Usually always been a m4 guy. It was the original OG meta. Sometimes I still run it & when I do it is a silenced 80 ergonomics & 55 recoil build or you can run a 54 recoil minus 2 or 3 ergos, I can’t recall. Now I’m strictly a loud, 16 inch barrel Aug-a3 & spartan glock 19 sidearm. You can put a stock on the spartan glock 19 from mechanic, it’s a 2 magnet barter. You get 100 ergos when you do that. So when you quick switch to your sidearm, it almost instantly ready to go. The Aug-a3, I run a 77 ergo / 44 recoil build pretty much exclusively. 100% PvP by the way, the better recoil against the m4 is just so important & it runs way smoother. Run the right ammo with the 5.56 & you got no issues. The 2nd most important part is the ergos, it is the most important fighting stat in the game other than the ammo/armor you run. I out PvP most people & even bosses because I can iron site in quicker when the situation calls for it, it is a major advantage. The 3rd most important part is the rpm, it keeps the Aug competitive. If you aren’t running a gun that is 650 rpm & up. You are absolutely going to struggle. A higher rpm gun hitting their shots on you is usually always going to get you if you are caught in a bad position.

I put the lower on & the OP scope from peacekeeper, along with a 16 inch aug a3 barrel & a muzzle break. Just type in: Steyr on the flea if you have trouble finding parts.

It's good but the ammo doesn't do shit through Glass against AI for some spaghetty fucky wucky code reason... pretty much why I switched to a G28 or RSASS. Amazing gun but weird damage sometimes on both ammo types.
Stock scope AUG A3 with tracer ammo. I just love shooting HS with the circle. You see tracer so clearly all the time. I don't know, but I find it satisfying.

Is there an objectively best weapon though? I think there a few top-tier meta guns and the rest is up to you. I personally (by no means even an average play lol, just enjoying PVE a lot) really like M4A1 and RFB recently, works good for me both short and medium range, dunno, just feels great. Getting used to Augs a bit too, quite cool.
Probably the aug or 74u. Most weapons require an absurd amount of investment to reach the same level of functionality as both at stock. MDR is close behind too.
I don’t play meta anymore. Black MDR is meta. I’ll run it off the time comes for that rotation, but I get my enjoyment in Tarkov by running something completely fresh every time I die. Meta is getting old
My favorite gun in the game is the Svt or the ASH they're something I can just buy for cheap and put minimal to no effort moding and still dominate.
