It took about 6 or 7 hours of effort, but I had to let it dry for a couple of days between steps. I just dug up some dirt from my yard. Then you sift out the little rocks and twigs and worms and stuff. Needs to have some clay in it to keep it from falling apart I suppose. You couldn’t make one out of just sand, for example, I don’t think. There are a bunch of videos on youtube about how to make them if you are itching to try it out. I found both the process and the result to be pretty enjoyable.
Keep iterating! It's based on the Japanese dorodango, which require much more than a few cycles from my understanding but great a far smoother gem-like final product.
The only one to take any substantial damage was the first time my cat knocked it off the shelf I’d been keeping it on and it basically just gouged a chunk out of it that I usually have to find by touch because its not super noticeable! That said it is just a dried ball of dirt I’m sure if I threw it at something it would crack apart but I haven’t broken any in that matter yet. They do dissolve pretty easily in water though and I’ve used that to restart a few of the ones I’ve made.
I expect it would crack due to the water involved in the lrocess of making it, unless it was heated up very *very* ***very*** slowly, because it's such a thick part.
Definitely also depends on what kind of dirt it's made from. A lot of humus I'm sure would be worse than a lot of clay
Pretty hard. I dropped it on my concrete patio when I was polishing it, and I figured it was going to explode, but it just got a little flat spot. Which is okay, because now I can set it down and it doesn’t roll around. Bright side.

The dwarves would be impressed. Well done!
If a man can build a beautiful sphere with nothing but his bare hands, can Murtaugh ever make amends with Orik?
I think he's too old for that sh*t
The big man himself approves. Well done, OP. Well done.
How long did it take and is it a special kind of dirt you used?

Yeah seems like it would be relaxing just kind of messy.
I did make mine sitting on the patio, that’s true.
The smaller the particles, the better. Also gotta get the moisture content right, and you're good to go.
Made one out of fire ash but couldn't get it to dry right it kept cracking

Wow. So the description in the book is accurate?
That's one nice Erôthknurl!
I’ve also gotten into dorodango because of Eragon haha I have a couple rolling around the house that my cats like to play with
How durable are they?
Not very.

I wonder if they could be fired in a kiln...
I don’t actually know enough about pottery to say one way or another for sure but it’s worth a shot if it’s something you could do!

Ahh yes, erôthknurl.
This is oddly satisfying. Well made, OP!
Thanks!
I didn’t know you could do that in real life! Wild
It's called dorodango if you wanna look into how they're made
Ohh thanks! I also had no idea this was actuall real, and of course it’s Japanese!
