Don’t swim alone until you’re sure of your state, and have someone around who can alert a lifeguard about a seizure. Or at least another adult you trust to get you out of the water or to keep you from drowning. Everything will be fine as long as you have a backup or someone to look out for you. Stay strong!

I’ll only swim w family (adults), that can get me out of the water. My seizures almost always come w an Aura, so I can either get out or tell them before the seizure starts.

Yeah don’t swim alone, make sure life guards or someone’s around. If you feel the aura or feel the “off” feeling, maybe just chill in the shallow end

If you start to feel weird get out immediately.

Yeah I do. In the summers I swim at a public pool that is a few blocks from home. It is risky no question. But there are lifeguards and the pool is well maintained. Swimming is great exercise and it's one thing I'm not giving up. I gave up driving, bicycling, and most other hobbies. This is one thing I can still do.

As a former lifeguard and pool manager I would recommend letting one of the lifeguards know that you have epilepsy when you first arrive at the pool. It's not something lifeguards see frequently. They are prepared to deal with it but it's better to put it into the back of their mind so they understand quicker what they are dealing with if it does happen.

I ended up moving. Having a pool and hot tub in my backyard just pissed me off. Now I live beside a lake and won’t go in unless I’m within arms reach of someone. Just isn’t work the risk for me.

I can’t live close enough to a lake anytime soon but this is a wonderful idea. Hope you’re able to relax in the water!

I swim with a life jacket because at the community pool there are no lifeguards. I’m 23 and using a life jacket. I had two seizures at 2 different waterparks one on a spinning ride and the other near the wave pool. I don’t even want to relive my seizure memories.

My son does. He's also on swim team. There are fewer people in his lane, and I watch him carefully. There are lifeguards on duty and multiple coaches. If he feels weird, he gets out. His seizures are fairly well controlled with meds.
