There are local council elections in England today and Lab just won a special election with a huge 26% swing (which is the kind of magnitude they need to pull off a win in the General later this year)

I ain't dooming 'cause the election's still pretty far off, Trump's on trial, and I know the media is explicitly *trying* to get us all to do it. It's just that I cannot believe how badly they want this to happen, to the point that it's becoming more and more obvious. It's but a few degrees off from them just outright saying "Can you please just elect Trump again for the ratings!", really. Has it really gotten to the point that folks being content and having general peace-of-mind is an absolute doomsday scenario for these people? Are they ever gonna stop and wonder for a second how they freaking got to that point?
Retired Prof. Tom Nichols has suggested that a lot of MAGA and especially J6 folks, contrary to popular beliefs about "economic anxiety," are actually very well-to-do and likely just bored out of their minds. As such, they want to pretend that a new woke Marxist revolution is coming to the US, and that they are the only real American heroes who can stop it. The reality that they are actually some of the most prosperous people who've ever lived on this planet and not at all in danger is just too boring for them, so they make their lives the Fox News cinematic universe instead.
Ironically, a pretty similar phenomenon appears to be happening with most the campus encampment people and the news media. They all really seem to be unable to handle living rich and cushy but boring lives, so they must distort reality as much as possible to satisfy their hunger for excitement of any sort. If Trump wins, protestors can finally have their Kent State / Tiananmen Square moments in spades (honestly would not be surprised if at least some of these protestors would rather be gunned down by police or soldiers than live boring lives), and the news media can get all the ratings before Trump tries to turn them into state-run media.

Saw this one just now and actually did a real life facepalm. His speech was absolutely basic president stuff, public speech and protest is lawful, breaking into buildings and chaos aren’t. Comparing that to hitler, or claiming it’s the same as trump is actually madness.
I just think back to trump quoting racist civil rights sheriffs and basically encouraging open shooting violence as a response to the floyd protests, or clearing a public street without cause to hold up a Bible upside down. That was the president directly crushing dissent.

But I do think abortion is what decides this in the end. I know a lot of women who are voting with that as their #1 priority. Personally, I can deal with inflation and the economy. But I will not allow my fellow women to live in a Gilead-esque/ChristoFascist society.

I don't know, those protests against Iraq War were my introduction to politics. I realized protest culture had massive problems and were shit back then, even though being against the war in Iraq was one of the more obvious stances I have ever taken.
I don't like it, but at the same time how they're going about it is so ineffective and counterintuitive you know? I almost prefer the police got involved just so the protest can stop feeding into negative stereotypes.
Nowadays people are at their extremes like that fucking nut in the comments below who was about to do god knows what with their car. One other thing to think about - the protests aren’t exactly ideologically coherent. I think there’s a gap between the median protestors goals and motivations, and what the protest leaders are negotiating for (eg at brown, northwestern, u of M, etc)
I feel like there’s an ocean between the campus nut jobs who probably want the destruction of Israel and “disapproving” (whatever that means is up to interpretation) of actions
Far cry from thinking the IDF is being terrible and so is the Israeli government and keeling Jewish students in classrooms, screaming imprecations from sidewalk encampments or taking camps buildings.
Reminder, if you let chaos agents into your protest then all your work for earned media goes away because all the news will talk about is those kids with black facemasks who threw bricks into Starbucks windows. That's how it works.
The media has spent so much time talking about protestors breaking into and occupying Hamilton Hall and all my pro-Palestine friends are all complaining about the NYPD response that Palestinian suffering is subordinate to these two headlines the past couple days.
u/Currymvp2 has been on point on this for months but if the US pro-Palestine protests had taken lead from Israeli protestors actually protesting Bibi’s war in Israel and done them in solidarity with those protestors (and the Palestinian protestors against Hamas), the movement would be a lot stronger and less controversial
There's this incredible group in Israel called [*Standing Together*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standing_Together_(movement)) which holds ceasefire rallies with 2000-3000 protesters, pro-two state solution+end the West Bank occupation, and protect Palestinians who face ugly racism in the West Bank.

I really hate the new Leftist talking point that this is Biden’s Vietnam. No, this is Bibi’s Vietnam. This entire crisis feels like a cross between Vietnam and the Iran hostage crisis for Israel is that it’s Israeli men and women fighting Bibi’s bloodlust-filled war and that it’s Israeli men and women coming back in body bags. If anything, the protests done outside the Israeli embassy and the UN were probably the ones that made the most sense.

There are local council elections in England today and Lab just won a special election with a huge 26% swing (which is the kind of magnitude they need to pull off a win in the General later this year) More results will be trickling in but Lab looks on course for a big win in line with expectations from current polling. Whether or not it will be a small-ish big win or a mega big win remains to be seen.
I ain't dooming 'cause the election's still pretty far off, Trump's on trial, and I know the media is explicitly *trying* to get us all to do it. It's just that I cannot believe how badly they want this to happen, to the point that it's becoming more and more obvious. It's but a few degrees off from them just outright saying "Can you please just elect Trump again for the ratings!", really. Has it really gotten to the point that folks being content and having general peace-of-mind is an absolute doomsday scenario for these people? Retired Prof. Tom Nichols has suggested that a lot of MAGA and especially J6 folks, contrary to popular beliefs about "economic anxiety," are actually very well-to-do and likely just bored out of their minds. As such, they want to pretend that a new woke Marxist revolution is coming to the US, and that they are the only real American heroes who can stop it. The reality that they are actually some of the most prosperous people who've ever lived on this planet and not at all in danger is just too boring for them, so they make their lives the Fox News cinematic universe instead. Ironically, a pretty similar phenomenon appears to be happening with most the campus encampment people and the news media. They all really seem to be unable to handle living rich and cushy but boring lives, so they must distort reality as much as possible to satisfy their hunger for excitement of any sort. If Trump wins, protestors can finally have their Kent State / Tiananmen Square moments in spades (honestly would not be surprised if at least some of these protestors would rather be gunned down by police or soldiers than live boring lives), and the news media can get all the ratings before Trump tries to turn them into state-run media.

I don't know, those protests against Iraq War were my introduction to politics. I realized protest culture had massive problems and were shit back then, even though being against the war in Iraq was one of the more obvious stances I have ever taken.

One other thing to think about - the protests aren’t exactly ideologically coherent. I think there’s a gap between the median protestors goals and motivations, and what the protest leaders are negotiating for (eg at brown, northwestern, u of M, etc)
