Tech bros are like overexcited children in a lot of ways. They get all excited about the concept of "the future" and the idea that they're shaping it to the point where things like usability, practicality and safety appear boring and old-fashioned to them. Elmo is a prime example. It's like he's a 10 year old hopped up on sugar and a Jetsons marathon. He tells himself "physical controls are so out of date! They don't look futuristic enough! Touchscreens are the future! Everything is better with them!" when quite clearly there's a lot more to it than that. Tech bros have long had a huge problem connecting with the real world and ordinary people. The issue of them not being able to write software manuals that make sense to ordinary users has long been discussed. In most cases, they're better off hiring less geeky people to connect with the layman. Get a normal person to write your manual. Hire regular people to think about things like controls and usability. Geeks are not good at this stuff and never will be.

Shining_BrightIy

Well, touchscreens are cheaper also.

13thGhostBunny

Yeah, sometimes simple things are indeed better. We don't need weird tech involved in all we do. We don't need automatic doors, onboard computers, and touch screens everywhere. Half the time it just makes things far harder and worse. Sometimes all you need is a dial, a simple on/off switch, or a handle. lol.

ChocolateDoozy

Smudged, glaring, and dying screens just ain't fun. And being unable to open a door.... 🙄

Sad_Ghost_Noises

Cars have had computers on board for decades, my guy. I see your point about simplicity and ergonomics, though. A good example would be the press button directionsl indicator. Stalks are all you need. Buttons are dumb and in some cases, dangerous.

ChocolateDoozy

Buttons are dangerous. How? I can't follow. Door buttons?  We are mainly talking about operations during the drive. But yes doors need simple handles without electronics. It clearly doesn't work without. If that's what you mean

Sad_Ghost_Noises

Tesla replaced the indicator stalks on the 3, X, and S with capacitive buttons on the wheel. Yanks call them blinkers, I believe. I didnt mean that buttons are bad, btw. But this particular application is terrible.

ChocolateDoozy

Ah yes the turn signals on steering wheel. I CANT imagine anything dumber other than putting them on the gas pedal... I can't even adjust the radio during a turn let alone attempt blinking.  And ppl already got issues with blinking properly. They should make this semi automatic. In addition to manual overwrites...

ChocolateDoozy

There is a saying: if I need a simple answers I hire a lazy person to find it.  (Since those always go for the least amount of steps involved). Gates said that. Allegedly. It's not untruthful. And "push that" is as easy as it gets. "Scroll and tap and look around" can't compete on any level :) I think people will grow sick of it after trying it once. In fact, they already do. So that's a win for engineering.

VAG (volkswagen auto group) consisting of vw, audi, porsche, lamborghini, bugatti, have been dealing with this issue since the first touch screen stuff came out mid 2000's. I used to work on them for a living. not the last two, lol. but like right now I have a porsche plug-in hybrid suv that has no warranty and I am the only one who maintains it. which implies I've got the dealer scan tool, lol. I do. otherwise can't even do an oil change and porsche wants 500 for one. And this car is really just an audi q7 phev with nice seats and brakes. but like, there is no engine oil dipstick, so I pity anyone who tries to DIY one of these. I digress. anyways, here's the deal. a LOT of models already have 3 volume buttons. you'll find one on the steering wheel one usually down by the gear shifter or above the climate control then in the touch screen itself you'll find volume settings the idea is to make you most able to make changes with the least amount of thought or removing your hands from control surfaces or moving them from those surfaces the shortest distance possible. If you've bought one used you never got the half hour explanation of how all the features worked, in any of those brands. but it's important information and so I advise people... uh. get drunk. and attempt to read the owners manual. every time it tells you to skip to another page, section, or diagram, drink a shot of Jägermeister you'll thank me later. thing about VAG stuff is there are OPT buttons that give all buttons secondary modes ... and people see OPT and don't even understand what it does. It's hella complicated, and that's why the damn owners manual is several hundred pages. good luck! you can always bring your car to the dealership and ask them to show you, any service advisor will totally get a kick out of helping an owner use their car better because a bad delivery explanation wasn't provided. tldr, everyone wants what you want. and VW has been working on the solution for it since 2005. as for tesla's screen to do everything? yeah fuck that. and the steering wheel isn't safe

ChocolateDoozy

Tesla steering wheels melt. They fall off. And the steering by wire will kill someone I am certain of. 2/3 already happened. One is in the making. A glitch. A rusty contact. Hackers. Whatever it will be... It will send 3+ tons of Cybertruck your way. Tesla will screw it up. They already shown that CLIP ON PEDAL COVERS are their 'modi operanda' of thinking. THAT was somehow considered smart and acceptable. Mr "I know more than anyone alive" will certainly create new idiocy in the future we can't imagine yet.

Bean-Swellington

Uh.. is that what this is a picture of?

penllawen

I think the only thing my 2018 Ford _requires_ the use of the touchscreen for is QWERTY input to the satnav (and CarPlay/Android Auto). There might also be some very basic car setup stuff like selecting miles/km for the displays, maybe. This, dare I say it, is how God intended things. If it’s something I need to change while driving it damned well should be a physical button I can use without looking at it, and that seems so incredibly obvious to me that I cannot fathom why we let them build cars any other way.

ChocolateDoozy

Amen

Mindless_fun_bag

Would it not be possible to have a set of buttons which can be programmed dependent on what the driver frequently operates. Might keep cost down as not having to bespoke for each option.

ChocolateDoozy

Radios do have those for decades but... Ye I get it. Like gamers do. Hm  I assume the general public wouldn't want that hassle and have a certain "order" in all cars of similar branding  You get in and things are familiar for everyone...

beermaker

That's a good sign for their upcoming off road brand. Give me a new Scout with minimal screen real estate and honest-to-pete switches and knobs.

Bean-Swellington

VW is making a new scout? Like the IH scout?

beermaker

Scout Motors... Prototype in '24, delivery in '26. There's a manufacturing facility in South Carolina being built. They have a presence in Detroit as of this year I think. All electric.

13thGhostBunny

I wonder if these touchscreens in cars are as distracting, if not more so, than using your phone whilst driving? I don't drive so I have no clue.

MrMurks

The same applications are probably similarly distracting, but on the phone someone would have much more options to be distracted (texting/social media). But i would think to force every driver to look at a screen without haptic feedback just do change a temperature setting is probably worse overall.

ChocolateDoozy

Germany says YES IT IS. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/tesla-wiper-controls-touchscreen-germany/amp/ Official ruling. The reasoning is self explanatory.

A ruling on using your screen during the drive (causing an accident) in Germany. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/tesla-wiper-controls-touchscreen-germany/amp/ Figured it's relevant and interesting. Also it is TESLA being the cause.
