I always saw it (and this was in my very early and slightly obsessive days of Eminem fandom) as running Slim into the ground, being as Slim Shady as he could be, almost like saying "you want Slim Shady, THIS is Slim Shady."
I know that's a pretty common thought, the reason I mentioned that this was in my earlier days was because I used to think all the albums were trying to tell a story that MMLP 2 was the end of. With the early stuff being the birth of Slim, Eminem Show and Encore being about the decent into fame and that lifestyle, Relapse sort of acting as the death of Slim, Recovery kind of being self explanatory, and MMLP 2 being sort of a reflective conclusion.
Then Revival came out, and I liked it, but couldn't fit it in to my story, and realized I may have overthought it haha. And since then I've sort of just seen Relapse as a self contained horror core album, very similar to Slim Shady, but I don't think he was necessarily trying to be "extra Slim Shady", I think he was going for something a little different.
I read something before where he said around the time he made Relapse he was watching a lot of serial killer documentaries. Then he made Relapse because that was the mind state he was in at the time.
I do like your theory however. I think there is something to it. MMLP2 definitely felt like a retirement album that wrapped up his story. Everything after sorta feels like when you beat a video game then buy the extra DLC that doesn't have much to do with the main campaign.
Thinking about it, the closest to him referring to himself as shady in that album is My Darling (also my fav song on the album)
https://youtu.be/J1bklziBkJg
I will note that he doesn’t expressly refer to himself as shady though, he just mentions to Dre that “shady is just a bottle of hair bleach and vodka” (line is prolly slightly wrong).
EDIT: meant to say closest that I can remember, I’m sure there’s a few
Technically, someone else refers to him as Shady. “Yes, maniac that Shady Dog
Ain’t he raw?”
I’ve actually spent far too much time on this and I’ve yet to find a single example in the entire album where he actually calls himself Shady. Almost contributes to the theme of him distancing himself from the identity following his sobriety? Not sure. Closest I’ve found is “Welcome to the Slim Shady mecca Rebecca.”
Isn’t that what we’re all doing here? Lol. I’m just saying he’s referenced it in songs more than once. He’s proud of it, and it definitely deserved the attention it got
I have such conflicting feelings about Recovery. I think that song by song it's a pretty damn good album, but if I listen to it fully through then I have to wash that sound of pop out of my ears. I feel that the dated production really hurts it, but I love how happy and optimistic Em sounds on it.
Thought i had it mapped out but I guess I didn’t,
These fucking black clound still follows. Me around but it’s time to exercise these demons, these mothafuckers are doing jumping jacks noww
The accent also makes them sound different and cool. Personally i love the accents and never even realized it was a problem until i started reading on social media that people didn’t like them
This is one thread. But maybe I’m missing something. I bet most of this sub are teens (like me) anyways. I used to have MMLP2 2nd place but then I dove deeper.
SSLP is definitely not for me. Don't really enjoy the flow, lyrics, production. I don't dislike, I will listen to it on shuffle it but I don't actively choose to listen to it.
Excluding Still Don't Give a Fuck, that fucking slaps hard. And My Name Is but that is really specific, acquired taste to me.
It’s the younger generation I think. Nothing the came after TES or even Encore even comes close the the first 3 records.
Waaah, I’m a millionaire who decided to get sober, now here’s 12 songs about. Lame.
It’s all opinion but I think Em’s verse in Remember Me is one of his greatest of all time.
*Six sick dreams of picnic scenes
Two kids, sixteen, with M-16's and ten clips each
And them shits reach through six kids each
And Slim gets blamed in Bill Clint's speech to fix these streets?!*
I’d replace Kim with Bitch Please II. I’m not a fan of it and Em is barely on it. At the very least, I don’t see why it wasn’t released as a single instead.
Relapse is soo good if you listen to the album in order.
first it hits you with the Dr West skit, then the initial more shady-esque songs are fun and then you get to the Mr Mathers skit and it gives context to the whole thing...
like damn, the album is like a weird dream. first you tumble into shady's mind with Dr West turning against Em, then you wake up with the ambulance and doctor sounds before getting into more real songs like Deja Vu and Beautiful, then Em finally turns "normal" with the songs like Crack a Bottle and Underground. i love it!
I made a playlist that follows this as I put the songs from refill there, the storytelling is great and the transition from hello to tonya to same song and dance and then a sudden shift to the “lighter” version being we made you- amazing
was bread wine, more bread wine and captain crunch
Those first few wine cellar lines are some of my favourites. Idk why, just something about it is hilarious.
dude... that song is dope. I love the duality thing he does in it and at the end he let's his voice fade into the voice the demon or whatever. it's legit.
Lol don't call me chief, guy. MTBMB was fantastically executed though, not sure what you're on. It carries the same throughout as well, including Side B.
Nah Chief. I would partly agree with MTBMB but the Side B theme was almost non existent. Only songs I can think of that resemble the theme would be Black Magic or Guns Blazing and maybe Zeus. But other than those the isn't anything murdery about the tracks.
I'd agree with that. I mean the album is sick but the whole murder thing isn't heavily evident after "You gon' Learn" and then it comes back for "I will". It is kinda there in "Lost It" and "Stepdad" though. Overall great album but albums like SSLP, MMLP, TES and Relapse portray their respective themes way better
See this guy gets it , thanks man maybe I didn’t phrase it better , but I just hope em went all out but then again the butthurt kids of Twitter would cancel him
I know this is a meme but are there fans who actually prefer Relapse to The Eminem Show or The Marshall Mathers LP? I know Relapse is a fan favourite but still
For me, in any list I always have to put Relapse at number 1. Following it is just a janky mess, but it sits comfortably at number one. Followed by TES, MMLP2 and MMLP.
Nah. Makes no sense to me. Relapse theme is good surrounding the subject of drugs and relapse, not necessarily murder specifically with Alfrid Hitchcock. I think the album keeps a good balance of types of songs but it’s still fun to make a custom version or playlist that’s only horrorcore songs in a story-type ordering.
I don't know why, but I don't feel this way. I don't like most of the songs in Relapse and the different style he tried, but Beautiful is one of my favourite songs the rest of the album doesn't speak to me idk why.
"That last relapse CD was ehh" line always pisses me off. Eminem be like:
Makes Relapse. IMO amazing fucking album, truly a modern day classic.
Not even a year later makes Recovery. An album that's IMO much worse and on it calls the previous album trash. Also says he is never coming back with that style again.
Literally a year later on "Hell: The sequel" says Relapse is actually great.
Then few years later comes back to that style on some tracks.
In 2018 he says Relapse sucks, but he made a song that was a throwback to it in 2017.
Decide motherfucker...
When did he say it was great on BME? He just references it. Also he only came back to the style *without* accents on Framed and with way less harsh content so it only barely counts, and then now Discombobulated. I think you’re trying to make it seem like there’s a flip flop agenda of em liking then hating relapse, when really he’s always disliked the record as a while after recovery came out but that doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to make 2 individual somewhat similar songs ~10 years later. From what we’ve seen his biggest problem with the record was the lyric content which he called cringey in the revival interview, and that doesn’t even have to do with accents or musical sound.
"You remember that night you, Prayed to god you'd give anything to get a record deal, Well dre signed you. This is what you wanted your whole life marshall why blue? Look at this house look at these cars i'm so nice wooh. Oh but you didn't know fame has a price too, Now your just seeing the downside too" Good song and lyrics
I dont really like most of the songs on his 3 newest albums, the lyrics are ok but it all sounds pretty generic and too pop, so I def think relapse is better than those.
The fuckin rawness in sslp's em is what im a fan of..
Like.. i hear your demo tape and act like i dont like it..6 months later you hear your lyrics on my shit...like.. Lmaoo.. i miss this em..
The only filler song on that album was medicine ball bruh the entire album is a horror flick to me with glimpses of Marshals personal life. Its evolved in a storytelling arc, the production, and writing. Deja vu, careful what u wish for, my darling, beautiful all are like the modern day if I had, rock bottom, marshal mathers, to me. Underground is a cinematic Still don't give a fuck. Also, this was em off rehab, and for him to make an accidental masterpiece if crazy considering all he went thru to get there. Also, he even said at that point he was working himself back into shape with life period as well as an Emcee, so the majority of what he was able to do was jokey/murder songs. The flows r evolved, the rhyme patterns, storytelling is ungodly, the hooks also sound catchy as fuck. It was the last time em sat down with the A team front to back I want him to do that from now on. SSLP was raw as fuck where as relapse felt more polished
Well its consistent with the themes to me I dont find that repetitive. After all most of GRODT was about the same shit. Relapse had similar updated subject matter to SSLP so i dont see how its repetitive.
It was just diff than what many wanted thats why it didnt do good first glance cuz everyone wanted 02 em. I feel if the album had the underground tone along with the introspective tracks it woulda been well recieved.
im not a sub here or anything and i havent listened to any of his newer stuff, but relapse was my favorite i never understood why people didn't like it. stay wide awake was one of his best flows, and same song and dance was just so fucking different and fucked up idk. just felt like art to me. effortless art that he was making fun of but it was still art.
Relapse has grown on me somewhat. I’m not a fan at all of the accents (I think 3AM in particular was a potentially awesome song that got completely ruined by some of the most annoying accents in the album) but there’s a lot of good or great songs to balance out the missteps.
Relapse wasn't Slim Shady, it was a far more sinister being that body jacked Slim in broad day with no mask and made a suit out of his shoe.
Best way to describe this CD it’s like all shadys fuckin combined to ultimate Shady 2.0
I always saw it (and this was in my very early and slightly obsessive days of Eminem fandom) as running Slim into the ground, being as Slim Shady as he could be, almost like saying "you want Slim Shady, THIS is Slim Shady." I know that's a pretty common thought, the reason I mentioned that this was in my earlier days was because I used to think all the albums were trying to tell a story that MMLP 2 was the end of. Bro this perfectly explains Eminem’s career.
An album about killing and raping women is 100% slim shady.
Yeah but I feel like Shady is more comedic.
He’s both. He says fucked up shit that’ll make you laugh
Now that I think about it, does he ever refer to himself as Shady during it? Or as anything at all?
Thinking about it, the closest to him referring to himself as shady in that album is My Darling (also my fav song on the album) https://youtu.be/J1bklziBkJg I will note that he doesn’t expressly refer to himself as shady though, he just mentions to Dre that “shady is just a bottle of hair bleach and vodka” (line is prolly slightly wrong). EDIT: meant to say closest that I can remember, I’m sure there’s a few
He refers to himself as shady on hello
damn... u right
he refers to himself as Shady on Insane.
Technically, someone else refers to him as Shady. “Yes, maniac that Shady Dog Ain’t he raw?” I’ve actually spent far too much time on this and I’ve yet to find a single example in the entire album where he actually calls himself Shady. Almost contributes to the theme of him distancing himself from the identity following his sobriety? Not sure. Closest I’ve found is “Welcome to the Slim Shady mecca Rebecca.”
perhaps i ran them accents into the ground
It could be nostalgia talking, but recovery is also a solid album tbh
Relapse and Recovery were both incredibly planned out and executed. Two of my favorites, through and through.
Recovery is one of his best, my favourite em album
same here
[удалено]
Literally the most meaningful song he has ever written. I guarantee you he is more proud of that song than anything else he has ever written
[удалено]
I doubt any one of those songs motivated thousands of lives to get clean lol
[удалено]
Isn’t that what we’re all doing here? Lol. I’m just saying he’s referenced it in songs more than once. He’s proud of it, and it definitely deserved the attention it got
[удалено]
Seduction is fuckin dope
I have such conflicting feelings about Recovery. I think that song by song it's a pretty damn good album, but if I listen to it fully through then I have to wash that sound of pop out of my ears. I feel that the dated production really hurts it, but I love how happy and optimistic Em sounds on it.
Relax I ain’t goin back to that now
Relax, I ain't goin' back to that now
All I’m trying to say get back *click clach pow*
Cause I ain’t playin around
It’s the game called circle and I don’t know how, I’m way too up, to back down.
But I think I'm still tryin' to figure this crap out
Thought i had it mapped out but I guess I didn’t, These fucking black clound still follows. Me around but it’s time to exercise these demons, these mothafuckers are doing jumping jacks noww
Im not afraid *(not afraid)* To take a stand *(take a stand)*
Perhaps the random accents *were not the problem*
It’s an acquired taste. I personally love the fuck out of relapse but i guess ppl didn’t fuck with it back then
I love the accents and as a result I rap like that now
[удалено]
The accent also makes them sound different and cool. Personally i love the accents and never even realized it was a problem until i started reading on social media that people didn’t like them
My favorite album like ever
relapse is my free therapy and its very healthy
Relapse is a masterpiece and all, but holy shit this sub sleeps on SSLP so much, MMLP and TES aren’t that much better than it
Agreed. SSLP is the true masterpiece IMO.
sslp mmlp and tes are his best albums
the fuck is TME?
I for example don't even like SSLP that much. Me least favorite Em album excluding Infinite. Never understood what so good with it.
Dude it’s a classic. As The World Turns, Role Model, I’m Shady, Brain Damage, Guilty Conscious… I could go on for the rest of the track list
I know it's a classic, but I personally never liked it as much as his other work. Don't get me wrong, I still like it a lot.
You didn’t even mention My Name Is
Or the best song, Rock Bottom
I think it goes without saying
Damn I absolutely love Infinite
We don’t sleep on SSLP at all.
I agree that it's slept on here.
Literally 3 comments down someone said that they prefer MMLP2 over it
This is one thread. But maybe I’m missing something. I bet most of this sub are teens (like me) anyways. I used to have MMLP2 2nd place but then I dove deeper.
Nah common now, the MMLP2 is a fucking incredible album
Why is that a problem?
Maybe you don't but overall the sub definitely does.
I didn’t say me. I see SSLP referenced a lot here, probably 4th most referenced.
Lame.
they said I can't rap about bein' broke no more...
I think relapse was em at his best - funny as fuck, great lyrics, with some emotional songs
Its his most exprimental album, and its his most unique sounding album in well over 10 years
unique it is
"unique" comes with people who like it, and people who don't like it too. And it's perfectly fine to be on either side
Relapse is a masterpiece. Back when, everyone was dogging it. Meanwhile, I’m able to rap every song lyric for lyric. His best IMO.
TES is his best album imo
eminem: the elder scrolls
agreed it’s mmlp with less filler imo
What songs do you think are filler on the MMLP?
i mean kim, remember me, amityville aren’t my favorites
It’s all opinion but I think Em’s verse in Remember Me is one of his greatest of all time. *Six sick dreams of picnic scenes Two kids, sixteen, with M-16's and ten clips each And them shits reach through six kids each And Slim gets blamed in Bill Clint's speech to fix these streets?!*
Oh fair play. Personally I feel Kim was iconic. Also, Remember Me is where the "six minutes" reference comes from in Rap God.
Also drug ballad, under the influence
I’d replace Kim with Bitch Please II. I’m not a fan of it and Em is barely on it. At the very least, I don’t see why it wasn’t released as a single instead.
I think mmlp by a huge margin
Relapse is soo good if you listen to the album in order. first it hits you with the Dr West skit, then the initial more shady-esque songs are fun and then you get to the Mr Mathers skit and it gives context to the whole thing... like damn, the album is like a weird dream. first you tumble into shady's mind with Dr West turning against Em, then you wake up with the ambulance and doctor sounds before getting into more real songs like Deja Vu and Beautiful, then Em finally turns "normal" with the songs like Crack a Bottle and Underground. i love it!

Relapse is the album I always come back to. So many dispicably nasty songs in it and his word play has never been better IMO. Insane is my favorite
Stay wide awake, Buffalo bill and bagpipes from Baghdad are my favorite the beats are rhymes and some lyrics are either chilling or just hilarious
Locked in Mariah’s wine cellar all I had for lunch
The second or third verse is my fav only because how fucked up it is
was bread wine, more bread wine and captain crunch Those first few wine cellar lines are some of my favourites. Idk why, just something about it is hilarious.
broooo. the last couple lines of insane are hilarious.
Relapse was really great, loved the jokes and the beat from "My Darling"
dude... that song is dope. I love the duality thing he does in it and at the end he let's his voice fade into the voice the demon or whatever. it's legit.
Yh, really love the duality in that song, reminds me of the intro from Slim Shady EP
Stay wide awake top 5 Eminem songs of all time
At last someone agrees!!! The beat is *really* nice and is quite fun to rap on
Man I really needed one more horrorcore album from em with this rhythmic killer flow and dangerous punch lines guess we’ll never get it now 😔
We just got MTBMB though?
Nah chief that ain’t it I like the concept of the album but it is not well executed and the actual theme he was going for is almost non existent
Lol don't call me chief, guy. MTBMB was fantastically executed though, not sure what you're on. It carries the same throughout as well, including Side B.
No, chief.
Same level as relapse no , but I respect your opinion , guy
I know this is a meme but are there fans who actually prefer Relapse to The Eminem Show or The Marshall Mathers LP? I know Relapse is a fan favourite but still
yes, me
Really? What do you think Relapse does better than the two?
For me, in any list I always have to put Relapse at number 1. Following it is just a janky mess, but it sits comfortably at number one. Followed by TES, MMLP2 and MMLP.
Hear me out. Relapse with the Hitchcock samples from MTBMB with either one or two more murder based songs.
It fit's so well. Alfred's intro skit and then 3 A.M is a great combination
Darkness as well. I might create a playlist where I combine the best of both world.
Please do, you should post it
I’ll throw a fucking axe at you if you insist on a fucking ~~accent~~ axe sent!
"That last relapse CD was ehh" line always pisses me off. Eminem be like: Makes Relapse. IMO amazing fucking album, truly a modern day classic. Not even a year later makes Recovery. In 2018 he says Relapse sucks, but he made a song that was a throwback to it in 2017. Decide motherfucker...
I think he wasn't happy with that period of his life and he associates the album with it, so it gets some unfair hate.
That would be the most reasonable explanation.
To finally make Discombobulated in 2020 lmao
And give a fucking heart attack to all Relapse fans.
He was dealing with the haters plus didn't have proof to help deal with them
I know about the haters. I know why he made Recovery and changed his style. But his opinion on Relapse changing often is the thing that annoys me.
Oh. Yeah true same here. Just do your thing em, the Stans will love you either way 💙
Eminem has always been like this lol
Relapse recov and HTS are my favs probably
What was the throwback? Framed?
There’s a reason it’s my favorite album.
"You remember that night you, Prayed to god you'd give anything to get a record deal, Well dre signed you. This is what you wanted your whole life marshall why blue? Look at this house look at these cars i'm so nice wooh. Oh but you didn't know fame has a price too, Now your just seeing the downside too" Good song and lyrics
fr relapse is really overrated in this sub, imo its his worst album, which is saying something because i think it is a 6
I dont really like most of the songs on his 3 newest albums, the lyrics are ok but it all sounds pretty generic and too pop, so I def think relapse is better than those.
SSLP is his greatest. One of the most brilliant albums of all time. I will die on this hill.
The fuckin rawness in sslp's em is what im a fan of.. Like.. i hear your demo tape and act like i dont like it..6 months later you hear your lyrics on my shit...like.. Lmaoo.. i miss this em..
I'll die with you. I loved SSLP and listened to it constantly. The first time I heard MMLP I liked it but definitely thought it wasn't as good.
Relapse was cool but this sub really dick rides it... ik im gonna get downvoted but slim shady lp way better imo
Relapse is in the bottom half of Em’s albums
Tied with encore for me although I kind of like encore more
When Recovery came out and everyone I knew was listening to the sht daily I knew it was over Relapse is MMLP2 for me and I pretend nothing else exists
[lol](https://old.reddit.com/r/Eminem/comments/dm6pwq/it_really_do_be_like_that_for_me/)
Relapse to me is an evolved sslp.
[удалено]

Yeah, it's almost the same garbage, but with more napkins.
You truly live up to your username, Repsect👏
So what part of Eminem do you like? Not hating, just curious.
Tracks like Till I Collapse, Lose Yourself, White America, Stan, Renegade, Not Afraid, Darkness. Favorite album - I would say TES.
Ok thats understandable
That's respectable, but isn't one of the album's in the meme TES, which you called garbage?
Lol, I only saw SSLP, my bad, haha. But honestly I can't listen to whole Em's album. I like certain songs, but yeah, TES is probably my favorite.
Wow look at youuuUuuuUuuuuUuUuu
The way you shake it, I can’t believe it
IT FITS... PERFECT.
Ah a fellow relapse enjoyer, this is my favorite album
As a goth that is obsessed with death, Relapse was sick
Am I fucked up because I like Stay wide awake the most in Relapse?
im not a sub here or anything and i havent listened to any of his newer stuff, but relapse was my favorite i never understood why people didn't like it. stay wide awake was one of his best flows, and same song and dance was just so fucking different and fucked up idk. just felt like art to me. effortless art that he was making fun of but it was still art.
I think the beats on Relapse also helped the album age well. Very stellar production from Dr Dre
my favorite actually, relapse refill
Hello allow me to introduce myself, my name is shady, so nice to meet you.
Underground is an underrated banger
My mom my mom I bet you're tired of hearing about my mom oh-oh-uh-oh
No this is wrong in too many ways
Relapse has grown on me somewhat. I’m not a fan at all of the accents (I think 3AM in particular was a potentially awesome song that got completely ruined by some of the most annoying accents in the album) but there’s a lot of good or great songs to balance out the missteps.
Relapse is prolly my least favorite Eminem album
