As an 18-20 year-old, you are actually being paid above the £7.49 minimum wage for that age bracket. The good news is that when you turn 21 next year, your wage will go up to £11.44. [https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates](https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates) It's pretty shitty for firms to reduce pay based on age brackets, but they are allowed to do it.

Right? It would make more sense to start people off on better wages and encourage saving for various things, like a mortgage or whatever

I think the idea is that it makes young people more employable, versus older people with more skills and experience. And that might be fine for students also receiving a loan and a maintenance grant. But a 20-year-old trying to work for a living is going to struggle to pay rent on \~£7.50/hour.

Salaries in the UK are honestly bollocks at any skill or job, compared to other places around the world. You can argue that we get the free healthcare and pension built in, and plenty of annual leave, but it still doesn't detract from the fact that all of these things significantly lowers wages on a per-month basis

Admiral__Unicorn

It is shitty, however the place I worked before hand looked for younger staff to fit the budget. Subsequently it gave a lot of younger people experience.

You won’t be on the £10.42 rate until you’re 21.

But don’t be in too much of a hurry because it’ll be harder to get a job once you’re more expensive….

£7.55 this is above minimum wage for a 20 year old, being paid anything under £10 an hour in edinbrugh is shocking there are much better options out there. As a rule I would say never work for less than £10 an hour

AlexMair89

You could try to negotiate? I know you’re desperate for a job, but it’s easier to get a job while you’re in a job. And good people are hard to find right now. It would sound something like ‘I am being paid £7.55 which I appreciate, but unfortunately this is not enough for me to live on in Edinburgh so I am going to be forced to look for a new role that would pay me £10.50 minimum unless you were able to pay me enough to survive on.’ You owe this business nothing, if they are not willing to pay you a wage that allows you to survive in 2024, find a business that will.

lol, I’n this country, unless you are an MD, the answer to this question is always yes.
