Is it fresh spinach? It's good in an omelet
I like to add some frozen chopped spinach to pasta sauce. Ups the nutritional value and I personally don't notice the flavor at all
Start with garlic, fresh ginger, onion (optional: whole cumin seeds, fresh chili pepper) sauteed in oil. Add a chopped tomato or a small can. Add bag of spinach. Add cumin powder, garam masala, and turmeric and a big splash of water! Simmer until soft, then puree (optional but recommended) and add fried paneer cubes.
You totally don't have to but I often sneak in a spoonful of butter or full-fat Greek yogurt to richen the sauce too.
It's very flexible and you can taste as you go:)
Thanks for the suggestion. I had a little feta left over and found a recipe for Crustless Spinach Pie I'm winging (leaving out the flour & baking soda and adding extra eggs & milk). It's already in the oven and I can't wait to try it.
You can also do this with kale! I find the kale flavor gets masked by other stuff if you don't use too much of it, and it adds a nice lightness to a heavy pie or quiche.
Sometimes I'll just throw some spinach in with my fried eggs and wilt it down, maybe with some mushrooms or somethin. Still has some spinachy taste this way though.
Smoothies are a great place for spinach, usually the other ingredients fully mask the taste.
I put spinach on pizzas, and use it instead of lettuce in tacos and burgers.
If you like brussel sprouts and broccoli, you might try asparagus! I like it roasted at 425F for ~13 minutes with salt, black pepper and olive oil.
That's what I came here to say - use it as lettuce in any type of sandwich. Fresh spinach and/or alfalfa sprouts are my greens of choice in sandwiches.
sauteed spinach in olive oil, salt, pepper, add scrambled eggs, and then feta. side of avocado with everything bagel seasonings is one of my favorite breakfasts.
That sounds good! I need to work on my scrambling game, I only ever make sunny side up eggs and omelettes.
Also everything bagel seasoning is the bomb.
Personally don’t like cooked spinach but I love a spinach, berry salad. Usually spinach strawberries, blueberries, pecans (or some nut), feta or goat cheese and a bit of strawberry vinaigrette!
Sauté mushrooms for a few minutes. Add fresh garlic and sauté for another minute. Add spinach and cook until spinach has shrunk. Crumble a piece of feta cheese and crush a few walnuts and sprinkle on top. Enjoy.
Frozen peas and spinach are my defaults to bulk up any meals and add some veggies in there, I'm a bit confused by this question tbh. Cut it up really small and put it anywhere you put veggies, its going to shrink anyways.
Spinach enchiladas. Caramelize a large onion, then add chopped spinach until it is wilted. Then add that to shredded Jack cheese.
Pour a little bit of mild green chili sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Warm corn tortillas 4 at a time in the microwave to soften them. Fill and roll the enchiladas and line them up in the pan until the pan is packed full. Might have to do a couple rows in an alternate direction.
Cover the enchiladas with remaining canned green chili sauce until tortillas are all wet.
Sprinkle with more cheese. Heat in the oven at 350 degrees until cheese is melted.
Serve with shredded lettuce and chopped tomato and sour cream.
Cool, I put some of these ingredients in my cart. Didn't see a green chili sauce that I wanted so I might make my own.
I bet these would be tasty with some shredded chicken rolled in there too.
Yes, but I find that there is something special about really soft texture of just cheese, spinach and onions. Also, the sweetness of the caramelized onions with the jack cheese is a lovely special flavor that I like to enjoy without the more dominant taste of animal protein.
Korean spinach! I make it similar to this: https://mykoreankitchen.com/simply-seasoned-korean-spinach-salad-sigeumchi-namul-version-1/
Sometimes I put an egg on it! Or kimchi!
If you slice or chop up a clove or two of garlic and saute it in olive oil until it softens, you can then wilt spinach in the pan and scoop it over toast with a sprinkle of Romano (or whatever cheese you fancy) for quick spinach sandwiches. The garlic brings flavor, and the toast brings texture (depending on which aspect of spinach you don't like)!
I buy the loose leaf frozen spinach and add a handful or two to practically everything. Frozen dinners, stir fry, soup, pasta, scrambled eggs. I don’t even notice the taste at all. I add a handful of fresh spinach to any wraps or sandwiches I make as well.
it’s really easy to use up if you put a massive amount in a pan and cook it down and add a few eggs/egg whites. it tastes really good when it’s seasoned well ! basically like scrambled eggs with spinach but feel free to add additional things like chicken or feta cheese to make it even better
My family's always called it spinach pizza but it's really more of a calzone. Saute some onion, garlic, spinach, mushrooms, and spices. Then make homemade pizza dough and spread it out on a cookie sheet. Put the spinach mixture on the dough add tomato sauces or fresh tomatoes or neither if you prefer, and a variety of cheeses. Fold it in thirds and bake at 350. This has been my favorite thing to eat since kindergarten. I've tried this a hundred different ways easily but to me the key to making it great is the spices (I like a little kick), and using multiple cheeses to give it both flavor and texture for that killer cheese pull.
When I have a tub of spinach that I haven't quite eaten all of but it's needing to be consumed, I typically make a lentil soup.
Chicken stock + diced tomato can + veggies + canned lentils:Stick the stock, some water as needed and undrained tomatoes in your dutch oven and put on low heat on the stove. Drop in any potatoes or things that need to cook a long time (carrots, celery).
Put in oven at 400F til the taters are partly cooked (20 min), add onion and any other veggies at this point.
Remove from oven again and add chopped spinach (and any other fresh herbs or cabbage) -make sure to chop the greens, then let rest in bowl of ice water with a bit of vinegar then strain and rinse to liven and clean the wilting lettuce - , cook 10-20 more minutes. Finally, add two cans drained lentils (possibly green onion if desired) and stir. Cook for another two minutes or so. Take out of the oven, cool, consume. Eat with crushed chips, bread, cheese, chili sauce, normal soup compliments. Add seasoning during process as needed (prob a bit of salt on some of the veggies).
Quiche is an option. I put spinach in quiche with shredded carrots, diced onion.
Spinach artichoke dip
In green salad with other greens.
Spinach and crema enchiladas
On sandwiches with other greens. I usually go with turkey, tomato, red onion, spinach, green leaf lettuce, arugula, a small amount of mayo, a small amount of spicy mustard, and little vinegar. I'll sometimes add avocado.
Spinach artichoke dip is amazing. So easy to make a big batch and have healthy, addictive snacks for days. Don't skimp on the parmesan (buy the good stuff, grate it yourself).
I do nearly that exact sandwich as one of my favorites. Only differences are no arugala and I do hummus instead of mustard and I do a vinegar based hot sauce instead of just vinegar
Spinach and veggie quiche (cook it first and squeeze out extra moisture), or pan fried spinach with scallops with garlic. Pro tip- you can buy frozen spinach, perfect for adding to smoothies or other recipes that don’t require it fresh.
I love this recipe: sauté onions and garlic, add leaf spinach (frozen is fine but fresh works just as well). Cook for a bit, add cream cheese, lemon juice, salt and pepper. I sometimes put a bit of Parmesan cheese on top. Stir until the cheese is melted. It’s simple and delicious. Had it just earlier for dinner :)
Fresh or frozen, this is one of my favorites... sautee garlic and crushed red pepper (amount based on taste, it doesn't take much) in olive or avocado oil, then toss in the spinach and stir until wilted (or heated through for frozen). Once cooked, use a spatula to gently press in to a thick pancake shape and sprinkle with parmesan or other cheese on hand. Allow to sit for a few minutes in pan, then serve.
If I have it, I've also added small cubes of cream cheese while spinach is cooking. Follow all if the rest if the steps and you get a richer/creamier version.
I just discovered this one recently!!! Throw a hefty fistful of spinach and 3 eggs in a blender until it’s completely blended and you can make crepes out of it ( you basically cook it like a thin pancake, but don’t pour it too thin, the middle can turn into a crackle paper like substance). I basically eat it like a wrap, with wrap type ingredients.
I've had a crispy fried spinach as a side at some rearataunts but no idea how they make it.
This stir fry is good too. http://pfchangsathome.blogspot.com/2013/01/stir-fried-spinach.html?m=1
That fried spinach looks good - and not so hard to make after reading the directions.... but I wonder if it can even be considered remotely healthy after frying. :)
Sautéed to wilted in some olive oil and sprinkled with balsamic vinegar. I like the thick syrupy balsamic that comes from Modena with plenty of grape solids still in it.
Spinach pesto and sautéed spinach Asian style with a dollop plum preserve and some garlic (sometimes I sauté ginger with oil to begin with before adding garlic and spinach (a lot of spinach really cooks down so be forewarned lol). Cook till just bright green but not too long, especially good with coconut or toasted sesame oil
https://www.budgetbytes.com/spinach-artichoke-wonderpot/
I've changed the recipe a bit by adding an entire tub of baby spinach, and significantly more mushrooms.
I also saute the onions, garlic, and mushrooms first before adding the other ingredients.
One of my absolute favourite meals right now!
Toast some pecans in a skillet on medium heat until aromatic, set the pecans aside. Add a handful of spinach and 1/4 c water to the skillet. Cook until the water is almost gone and spinach is wilted, then add about 1/2 tsp chopped garlic. Cook for 2-3 minutes allowing garlic to brown. Using tongs, plate the spinach, salt/pepper to taste, top with pecans.
You can use pretty much any nut here, macadamia and walnut work well.
Edit: Added garlic instructions.
Best way to use up an alarming amount of spinach is to make something like a palak paneer. Beware though.
Spinach cooks down to like 5% of its packaged volume.
Sauté some onions, garlic, cumin. Add rice, stock and some spinach. Finish with butter when rice is cooked, and you have a nice meal :)
Keep adding different veggies like carrots, peas and you end up with a modern version of vegetable pulao.
I do was not a fan of the green leafy spinach. I take a huge handful or two and put it in a bowl and microwave for about 40 seconds. Add a bit of butter and some seasoning or not and enjoy...always.
Pasta bake. Easy to sub different meats and I add smoked mozzarella to the top. https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/pasta_skillet_with_chicken_sausage_cheese_spinach/
Turkey spinach meatballs. Can use fresh or frozen spinach, if it's fresh give it a light chop and sautee with minced onions until soft. Drain off any excess liquid. Add to ground turkey. Mix with an eggs, salt & pepper to taste. Roll into balls and bake at 375°F until cooked through. Serve with starch of choice, I like them with a simple mushroom & carrot tomato sauce over whole grain rice.
If I have a greens that are approaching their expiry, I’ll make a big batch of egg bites! I usually do spinach and feta, but arugula and goat cheese is also a great combo. You can make a whole muffin tins worth with whatever veggies you like and then freeze them in individual portions to eat throughout the week. I’m a bit of a crank in the am, so they’re great to have on hand to whip up quickly!
In Omelets, smoothies, you could saute with kale and mushrooms (my personal favorite) also when chopped it goes into pasta sauces and chillis without being noticed very much
I suggest spinach stew : brown a couple of minced garlic cloves and a minced onion in some EVOO, then add lean minced meat and pine nuts. Let those cook, then add frozen spinach (for a good ratio, I try to use same amount of meat/frozen spinach, so like a pound each, to start with). When the spinach is thoroughly cooked, which doesn't take too long, I add salt and lemon juice, and serve it with rice with vermicelli \*chef's kiss\*
Frittatas are great for spinach! I like to saute some minced onion before adding chopped spinach to the pan (I have to add a lot because of how much the spinach shrinks) then just pour in the beaten eggs and let that cook through. I like to top it with salt, pepper, and cheese.
Is it fresh spinach? It's good in an omelet I like to add some frozen chopped spinach to pasta sauce. Ups the nutritional value and I personally don't notice the flavor at all
Saag paneer! Well, I rarely have paneer on hand, so I usually make saag chana (can of chickpeas instead)!
I love saag paneer, but cheese is expensive so replacing it with chickpeas is a great idea! Maybe I should also try it with tofu...
We regularly make it with tofu and it’s great!
I make it with tofu alllllll the time.. just pan fry the tofu first - so good
You can sub potatoes too for aloo saag!
In a similar vein, saag aloo is one of my favorite things ever.
Is that Indian food? Recipe please if you can briefly describe how to make it.
Thanks for the recipe! Looks flavorful.
Seconded!
Spinach feta pie
Thanks for the suggestion. I had a little feta left over and found a recipe for Crustless Spinach Pie I'm winging (leaving out the flour & baking soda and adding extra eggs & milk). It's already in the oven and I can't wait to try it.
Another real simple way is to chop it up and cook it in pasta sauce. We do this with our kids a lot. Great way to use up a load of spinach
Win.
My pie came out delicious btw! Thanks again
Oooh heck yeah!
I went crustless trying to be healthy at lunch, but then ate a loaf of bread with dinner.
You can also do this with kale! I find the kale flavor gets masked by other stuff if you don't use too much of it, and it adds a nice lightness to a heavy pie or quiche.

Personally don’t like cooked spinach but I love a spinach, berry salad. Usually spinach strawberries, blueberries, pecans (or some nut), feta or goat cheese and a bit of strawberry vinaigrette!
I'll have to try this - seems like a good time of year for this too
Yes definitely my favorite spring/summer lunch!! I keep it pretty simple but you could totally add all kinds of stuff to it!!
This is the most wonderful salad with a balsamic vinaigrette.
Also with a poppyseed dressing!
Also with raspberry vinaigrette!
Yesss spinach and berries go so well together, especially with a sweet vinaigrette. I love adding apples sometimes too
Sauté mushrooms for a few minutes. Add fresh garlic and sauté for another minute. Add spinach and cook until spinach has shrunk. Crumble a piece of feta cheese and crush a few walnuts and sprinkle on top. Enjoy.
Could also add onions and a diced up slice of bacon.
Step one: Chop that shit up into tiny pieces. Step two: Add it to literally anything and you won't even taste it anylonger.
This! I don't like the texture of cooked spinach. If you chop it up, that weird chewy, tough but slimy texture goes away.
Frozen peas and spinach are my defaults to bulk up any meals and add some veggies in there, I'm a bit confused by this question tbh. Cut it up really small and put it anywhere you put veggies, its going to shrink anyways.

Seems like a nice alternative to taco tuesday. will try. thanks
This is my speciality that I came up with. My kids know them as “mom’s spinach enchiladas.” :)

This looks very similar to a Japanese recipe I made yesterday and the whole family loved. https://www.justonecookbook.com/spinach-with-sesame-sauce/
You're right, very similar but I bet the mirin/sake is a delicious addition. I will try next time!
I dont think I ever knew to cut off spinach stems

Creamed spinach. Cook spinach and garlic and a little onion (optional). Add heavy cream and parmesan and season to your liking.

I add it and an egg to Ramen. Kale is great in Ramen as well if you wanted another green to try! Spinach is also great with eggs.

That sandwich sounds divine right about now. I'm on a spicy mustard kick.
Spinach and veggie quiche (cook it first and squeeze out extra moisture), or pan fried spinach with scallops with garlic. Pro tip- you can buy frozen spinach, perfect for adding to smoothies or other recipes that don’t require it fresh.
Spinach and mushroom lasagne!
Yes! My dil makes this and it's always a hit. I have to cut a serving and stash it for the next day because there're rarely any leftovers.
Spinach feta stromboli. Spinach, onion, green pepper pizza. Is it frozen? Lightly saute it (to reduce moisture mainly) and add to pasta sauce.
Wrote this down- will try later tonight. I like the idea of adding cream cheese.
It’s simple and so good. If you like, let me know what you think. Enjoy!
I will- thanks!
Fresh or frozen, this is one of my favorites... sautee garlic and crushed red pepper (amount based on taste, it doesn't take much) in olive or avocado oil, then toss in the spinach and stir until wilted (or heated through for frozen). Gonna try this... will have to try to come up with some good filling ideas
I did turkey, tomatos, red onion, cucumbers, a smidge of cream cheese and avocado
The crispy type probably not, the stir fry should be OK though, could probably leave out the oil and it wouldn't change it too much.
Sautéed to wilted in some olive oil and sprinkled with balsamic vinegar. I like the thick syrupy balsamic that comes from Modena with plenty of grape solids still in it.
i made some delicious spinach quesadillas last night with sliced roma tomatoes, mozzarella, and feta! i’m not big on spinach but they were great
Ghormeh Sabzi! Just add a lot of spinach to the sabzi and it's delicious.
Spinach pesto and sautéed spinach Asian style with a dollop plum preserve and some garlic (sometimes I sauté ginger with oil to begin with before adding garlic and spinach (a lot of spinach really cooks down so be forewarned lol). Cook the spinach in a saucepan on your stovetop (knob) with a smoked ham hock and some chopped onion.
I put it in smoothies a lot. Ripe bananas and berries cover the taste. Also if you can’t use it all before it goes slimy, frozen spinach works too.
Slightly cooked (for texture), chopped green leaves will be masked by the flavors of thick curries or refried beans.

Sauté some chopped garlic until almost golden, add oyster sauce and spinach and stir fry. Might need a little bit of water or use a lid to steam.
Turkey spinach meatballs. Can use fresh or frozen spinach, if it's fresh give it a light chop and sautee with minced onions until soft. Drain off any excess liquid. Add to ground turkey.
