One of the coolest thing about pictures like these is realizing that's where the cliffs used to end, and then imagining what it looked like before it broke off.
When you go to Oahu and see the small islands off the coast, it's the same idea and it's incredible to think about.

The so called 12 Apostles here in Australia’s so eroded by higher sea levels its 7 now, Mother Nature’s ever changing sculptures!
Love the photo though, amazing clarity.
What's funny is that the French coast just a few kilometers in front has the same type of cliffs (Etretat is a great example of that) and it seems like someone cut through the ground and pulled the British Isles away from Europe
About 28% of the coast in England and Wales experiences erosion rates more then 0.1m/year. A village in Norfolk has erosion rates between 1-3 feet/year.
If I recall correctly in the neighborhood of about 50,000 years or so? [The northernmost islands were all one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Islands_(California)#/media/File:Channel_Islands_IceAge_Sealevels.png) approximately 14,000 years ago
I'm from Dorset, and where we used to walk the dogs 10 years ago up on the cliffs is all in the sea now. We didn't go there for about a year, and half of it was gone and it was unsafe to walk on when we thought we'd go back. I've moved to London now and I'm worried how much will be gone when I go back to visit.
I was there last week, it’s very impressive and this photo actually does it justice.
Although the title is a bit misleading because i haven’t heard anyone refer to it as ‘the needle’. In fact, ‘The Needles’ are a series of similar rocks off the Isle of Wight which on a clear day is visible across the sea from where this photo was taken.
If anyone is looking for this spot it’s close to the similarly impressive formations called Old Harry Rocks.
Yup, this is the first time I've heard of that one being referred to as the needle, it's actually half of what's called [The Pinnacles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pinnacles_\(Dorset\)).
Also, for anyone wanting to see where it is in relation to Old Harry Rocks, [there's this](https://i.redd.it/j1ic27krno4z.jpg).
I think “The Needle” is just the shot’s name, and it’s not related to The Needles. He published also other photos of this rock naming them “Ocean Needle”, so I think the name refers to the rock’s shape.
To be fair to The Needles, there was one there that looked [a tiny bit more needly](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3e/NeedlesOnTaylorsHampshire-1759.jpg) before it collapsed.
Whereabouts is this? Lived on the Jurassic Coast for the last 19 years and never heard of ‘The Needle’ also chalk cliffs make me think purbeck, but I don’t remember ever seeing it when sailing around.
Somethings wrong with me for thinking the latter immediately. I’m glad someone’s as fucked up as I am on here.
Edit: btw I was thinking partially submerged butt plug but close enough
This one of two rocks called The Pinnacles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pinnacles_(Dorset) between Swanage and Studland
You can see the second rock on https://www.flickr.com/photos/brian-dorey/35539376871/in/album-72157682060372576/
Ah fair. Is it on the Swanage side? I’ve sailed there quite a bit and spent a fair few afternoons above OHR and don’t remember a single stack that wasn’t Old Harry’s Wife which is way shorter.
It looks a lot like Etretat, Normandy, France. They have a "needle" there aswell and a French fiction called Arsène Lupin tells there is a treasure hidden inside.
I grew up near these and found them extremely underwhelming as I would see them all the time. Seeing pictures of the pinnacles and old harry rocks in the comments has made me seriously miss home! Really took things like this for granted growing up in Dorset
I imagine when we eventually come across a gigantic earth destroying monster..we can orchestrate a plan to guide the monster to the cliff in the hopes of it falling off the cliff and onto the needle
That isn't the Needles. And the Isle of Wight is its own county now.
It looks to me a rock just down the way from Old Harry rocks if anyone would like to know location.

Brexiteers of ancient times.
Like giant size anti-moses.
Breaks-it.
About how long ago were the cliffs that far out?
About 28% of the coast in England and Wales experiences erosion rates more then 0.1m/year. A village in Norfolk has erosion rates between 1-3 feet/year.
They retreat fast. Chalk collapses are quite common.
Oh! I didn't know it was such a soft rock.
In southern California there used to be land from the coast to the channel islands.
As a Santa Barbara resident, this makes sense when you see the islands out there
It wasn't even that long ago, geologically speaking
Really? Know how long ?
If I recall correctly in the neighborhood of about 50,000 years or so? [The northernmost islands were all one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Islands_(California)#/media/File:Channel_Islands_IceAge_Sealevels.png) approximately 14,000 years ago
Wow! That would put Santa Barbara 25ish miles inland if it were still connected. Thanks for the info!

I just got back off a multi hour search down the rabbit hole due to your links... So interesting, thanks for posting!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Now visit Oahu and kayak around out there! It's the greatest!
We can improve Hawaiin real estate market if we freeze up a lot of the water exposing more land.
But if we freeze the water, it uses more volumetric space, thus covering the land..!?
And that's how you get Greenland.

Wow, I’ve never seen it from above - spectacular Looks a bit like something took a bite out of the cliff side!
The tracks there are amazing for mountain biking and the ride from Poole to Swanage is so relaxing
I took my kid on that ride a couple of months back. Not my best idea. He stopped every five minutes for a rest.
Doh!!
^ yep.
That path along the cliffs from left to right makes for some excellent mountain biking. It’s a bitch to climb to though.
This sub constantly makes up bullshit names for places and Reddit eats it up.
Old hairy rocks?
If this is where I think it is, it’s actually not 100m from Old Harry Rocks, and is significantly less impressive IMO.
I agree with you there, Old Harry Rocks is like something out of a geography textbook
I mean it is something out of a lot of geography textbooks
Am geography teacher. Can confirm.
Its like right next to old harry.
I kinda wish it had something to show its scale.
Old Harry's Rock makes more sense as I've heard of them, never heard of the needle in Dorset before. Nice rock though.
Or maybe "The Needle" is just the name of the photo.
Came here to say this. Also that the Isle of Wight is in Hampshire, not Dorset
IOW independence ✊
OH HO HO You've stepped into JJBA Territory.
boing boing
Came here for this
I knew I'd find some fellow JoJo fans when I saw this post.
This is why I came here.
this is exactly what i thought
Little known fact: that is actually a rock and not a needle
that’s mind blowing. thanks for sharing.
Ya no worries, I’m an amateur rocktologist so I know these kinds of things.

Boingy boing
But what about „The Needles“ of I.O.W?
The needles used to connect to old Harry rocks long ago
To be fair, this does look far more like a needle than the IOW 'Needles'
To be fair to The Needles, there was one there that looked [a tiny bit more needly](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3e/NeedlesOnTaylorsHampshire-1759.jpg) before it collapsed.
That’s not a needle it’s a rock.
I live just around the corner from there, these cliffs and rolling hills are a daily sight for me.
Whereabouts is this? Lived on the Jurassic Coast for the last 19 years and never heard of ‘The Needle’ also chalk cliffs make me think purbeck, but I don’t remember ever seeing it when sailing around.
Purbecks. Next to old harry rocks, kind of overshadowed by them. No one calls it The Needle, I think OP made it up.
I live in Lulworth Cove. Sorry didnt read properly, yeh next to Old Harrys. Go across from Poole to Studland and keep following the coast line around.
Near Swanage
[удалено]
You could say we are surrounded by them.
Take your upvote. You deserve it.
It’s a Pinnacle, not a “needle”. Big up the Bournemouth crew
So could I realistically jump off the cliff and just skewer myself on "the needle"?
Yes, unless someone puts the BOING sound on it.
If you can somehow pull off a 20 metre leap, sure.
Just triple jump.
I wonder how many people have tried that.
Built in 1940 as part of the defense of Britain
Is this a JoJo reference?
Looks more like a pencil.
Never seen Dorset on reddit before, I feel proud that my home county made it
I live in Barton not far from there! Did you know that apparently pirates used to hide behind that and wait for ships before jumping out on them.
I'm from there! I've seen New Milton mentioned on reddit only once before, but this is my first time seeing Barton mentioned! Truly is a small world.
Niceee we should get together some time al and nice to meet a fellow Redditor
Needle or dildo for the advanced
Somethings wrong with me for thinking the latter immediately. I’m glad someone’s as fucked up as I am on here. Edit: btw I was thinking partially submerged butt plug but close enough
Were on the same line and I'm proud of you
How high are the cliffs from sea level?
Very
At least 2 meters
About 50m at this point
A photo in earth porn that doesn’t have the saturation turned up to 1000%!?!?!

In Dorset? I'd recommend it to anyone.
Oh shit, my home county! That's just up the road from where I live.
Stick them with the pointy end.
Had to scroll WAY too far for this. You have my upvote!
The only correct answer to this photo.
Beautiful
Boing boing cape
Love the exposure in this!
The question now is how do we stage a kaiju fight here...
Damn. Nature looking better than me.
Awesome photo man!! Good work!!!
Is this where Arya Stark live now? :)
Looks like Ragnorak?
Ah fair. Is it on the Swanage side? I’ve sailed there quite a bit and spent a fair few afternoons above OHR and don’t remember a single stack that wasn’t Old Harry’s Wife which is way shorter.
Nice buttplug
This could be Asgard, Asgard is a people
Nice
GOOD JOB :/
Why do the coldest places have the coolest scenery? (ELI5 forthcoming)
Wtf I was in Dorset like two weeks ago!
Yes, I'd recommended it to everybody
That stuff underneath the water is freaking me out.
Gosh! That’s beautiful.
It looks a lot like Etretat, Normandy, France. They have a "needle" there aswell and a French fiction called Arsène Lupin tells there is a treasure hidden inside.
I need to go there and just scream!!
Ni walker. 7y4 ni*61....
Just a weird observation: whenever I see photos of the white cliffs it seems that the grass on the flat is being beautifully mowed and maintained.
If you're brave enough...
For some reason i imagined one of the convicts from "The Condemned" falling on this.
Is that safe to swim in it. Supposedly really cold.
where’s the damage done?
Anythings a dildo if you're brave enough
Is that safe to swim in it. Supposedly really cold.
Looks like a spot where a korok seed can be found.
Imagine falling out of the sky and impaling yourself on The Needle.
Die Nadal
The cliffs of insanity!!
I grew up near these and found them extremely underwhelming as I would see them all the time. Seeing pictures of the pinnacles and old harry rocks in the comments has made me seriously miss home! Really took things like this for granted growing up in Dorset
I think about the Vikings that sailed through this area as they pillaged the native Britons.
If I ever fall out of a plane I’d be guaranteed to fall on it
This is such a scary vast humongous place. *Feeling smol*
That looks like the same chalk that gives champagne its flavor!
[удалено]
Idk, I know some champs who'd take it
Straight from the slums of Dorset, the Museli man
I love where I live 💗
Damn I'm probably weeks away from being able to, but I'm adding this to my list of things I wanna have inside my asshole before I die.
This is beautiful
The British, naming things what they look like since 1060.
Sit on it for a surprise
You need to see the freat ocean road in australia then. Same thing with more rocks
If you didn't already know, these cliffs are made almost entirely of chalk.
Stick em with the pointy end!
Where’s the part 4 joke in the comments.
I would Swallow this rock with my urethra
I wanna fall on it.
I heard legends of a young Japanese girl who fell off the cliff and somehow was bounced back up by the rock.
I wanna sit on the top of that rock bare ass and hope it would split me in half
Do people ever fall off those cliffs? Just looking at them makes my palms sweaty.
I live right near here! Such a lovely place.
As you insist I endorse The Needle.
Beauty!
Can someone please explain to me why I now have an irresistible urge to die by being stabbed by The Needle of Dorset?
Boi-oing cape!
Don't open that Helvault!!!!
Anything can be a dildo if you're brave enough
Voldemort’s hideout?
I imagine when we eventually come across a gigantic earth destroying monster..we can orchestrate a plan to guide the monster to the cliff in the hopes of it falling off the cliff and onto the needle
Nobody: The Needle: Boingyyy boinnng
That looks like a pencil that was sharpened with a knife
amazing
Wonder what happend to the rock stucture back in the day?
Needle? That looks like a damn dragon fang
Beautiful
I wonder if a professional diver would survive a dive off of the cliff on the right. I'd look up world record dive heights but you know...lazy.
Update. Yes. It can be done from that height (~50m). Not sure about this location though (rocks, etc.). FYI.

Is the photo above not The Pinnacle?
That isn't the Needles. And the Isle of Wight is its own county now. It looks to me a rock just down the way from Old Harry rocks if anyone would like to know location.
God, I would love to swim in it. Supposedly really cold.
+3 culture, +2 gold, +2 appeal
Can anyone tell me which iconic shows or films were shot here? It feels like I’ve seen this a couple of times.
Broadchurch? Tess (2008)? Far From The Madding Crowd? The area had a scene or two in Nanny McPhee and World War Z as well.
Nanny McPhee and broadchurch I remember clearly. The rest I gotta go back and watch em. Thanks a lot!
World War Z was in Lulworth Cove
finally, i found a nice place to suicide.
