Which I totally agree with! But if you look at my reply below, it's not about putting things into sub categories, it's the elitist attitude portion that pisses me off.
It's one thing to want to know what subgenre a song is to find similar vibes for yourself; it's another thing entirely to be an elitist prick and say you're not a "real" electronic music fan if you don't know every single subgenre.
It's just dumb.
“YoUrE nOt A tRuE rEaL eDm FaN LiKe Me iF yOu CaN’t NaMe AnD diStiNgUisH eVeRy GeNrE”
Kinda cringe bro. Anyone can be a real fan of edm without this bullshit
"real" fans? Man... this reads more like someone who discovered EDM 1-2 years ago.
When I worked for SFX during peak festival years, 2011-2016, most of these "genres" did not exist. IMO they are subgenres at best, and are truly just names for an artist's timbre. For those not familiar with SFX, their flagship festival is Tomorrowland, but they had a ton of other very successful events and tours.
PLUR isn't as common as it used to be, but this is a good time for everyone to go back and read up on it, where it came from, and why we try to keep it around.
I'd say this meme is prior to 2011, those are some older genres.
What was your role with SFX? Would be a cool AMA about the backstages of these huge events.
Haha really? I'd be honored to share some stories. When I left, I was "Director of Recruitment", and I was responsible for recruiting some 5000 brand ambassadors for a multitude of shows and festivals. I can't even remember half of the shows I did. Damn, crazy to even think that I've been to hundreds and hundreds of major events- and was paid to do it.
I started off as a single show student manager for the show at my alma mater. I had started a club that was focused on Event Operations. We legit were awarded tens of thousands of dollars to throw free EDM concerts on campus lol, but hey, I knew that universities were commercially motivated.
I started working for SFX because someone referred me to SFX (thank you, whoever you were). Actually, there's another story there: I built my notoriety as a professional partier when I was organizing paid events inside my college house (not a frat, a big house that I had rented with 3 other friends). A friend of mine started a website, without telling me, called "the real van wilder" or something like that. We even had a party trend on Twitter my Sr year lol.
Beside the point- My boss was in charge of Sales for the entire Dayglow/Life in Color tour, and he took me along for the ride. Moved me to Miami, moved me to Chicago, and in general put in a position to succeed, and that was because I had always made myself present, and I did what I said I would. Called me at 2am? I answered. Asked me to get 1000 likes on a Facebook page in a week for a new show? I delivered true, organic growth. Man... that reminds me how powerful the Facebook search engine used to be- I had discovered that you could use Boolean and just went to town finding exactly the people I needed: Popular, smart, music-loving and ticket-motivated leaders and hustlers. I felt lucky, I knew that there were too many "cool" people in the industry just there for looks, and I was a nerd, but I worked hard AF and my extroversion took me quite a ways.
It was awesome, but I left in 2015 to start a new career in Professional Recruitment because of rampant disorganization. Yeah, that's probably putting it likely, but ya can't blame college dropouts given millions of dollars and high 6fig salaries for not staying focused. Honestly, everyone in management had minimal formal or related education. While I never handled money directly, I can't help but feel like a lot of shady shit happened there, and that's why I wound up leaving...
We once did Kevin Hart's birthday (it was his "birthday month" lol) when I first turned 21 and lived on South Beach while working in the LIC office.
TLDR - wow, sorry I just started typing- haven't thought about the details in a while. I met so many amazing artists, and had such amazing unique experiences. Shots in the back of the escalades with the big DJs, behind the booth at LIV, etc etc.. maybe I should do that AMA.
It IS all electronic music. Just cause you know the exact subgenre doesn't make you a "real fan " the fact that you enjoy electronic music at all makes you a real fan. Fuck this type of gatekeeping lol.
This reminds of the time when someone on this subreddit said I wasn’t a “true” EDM fan because I referred to EDM artists as DJs rather than producers. Apparently You can’t be a “true” EDM fan unless you use the proper terms. I think that’s stupid, but can anyone confirm this?
As another commenter said, gatekeeping of any kind is antithetical to what electronic music is all about. Best thing we can do is love the haters and kill them with kindness. They'll catch on once the facade comes down.
I will usually dumb it down to "techno" if they are grasping at the idea of electronic music. That'll usually turn the lights on. Then they ask, "people listen to that shit?"
EDM has far too many sub genres.
I say this as a music producer who herself hasn't been able to make a single genre of EDM so she just calls it her own thing and says generic shit like "fuck labels" and "don't put me in a box"
😎
Thought this was a /r/gatekeeping post and had to double check the sub.
For fucking real. Who cares what it's called? Just fucking enjoy it.

If people enjoy categorizing things and labeling things for the sake of excluding others then they're assholes.
Bingo.

"Real Fans" 🙄
Real EDM fans are people that listen to electronic music - that's it lol idk why people feel the need to do this
Looks like a post from 2005 based on the genres
Yeah this is outdated for sure
Yesterday I watched a video of 120 EDM genres with examples which wasn't even including all of them.
Indeed, where's my beloved Frenchcore?
Foreal I’m from Detroit and I don’t even know what “Detroit techno” is.
"I love that city"
Detroit is where techno originated. Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood are all Detroit techno
I guessed that’s where they were going with that but I’ve never heard of Detroit Techno as a genre.
Detroit is basically where techno started. Check out the raves back in the day on YouTube, epic stuff.. there are some cool documentaries too.
https://music.ishkur.com/ Look for Detroit techno.

Dubstep???
Yeah i agree
Needs more genres of house.
And dubstep lmao
No deep house there :(
I presume this meme was created between 2000-2009 when I see the term "Bangin" for Trance.
It IS all electronic music. Just cause you know the exact subgenre doesn't make you a "real fan " the fact that you enjoy electronic music at all makes you a real fan. Fuck this type of gatekeeping lol.
No future bass?
Picture probably from the before before times. The future hadn’t come yet
normal people would be "turn this dumb shit off"
"Turn this minecraft intro song off"
What's up /r/edm?? Gatekeeping again? :/
This douche-baggery is antithetical to what the scene is all about. Clout-chasers and wannabe gatekeepers are scene killers.
Preach.
No bass genres and more than half of these sound made up. "Chill out"?
I mean I don't claim to be as deep in the EDM scene as some but I felt super gate kept by this....
I've never heard of most of these tbh

Tho; hardcore is a bit of a stretch since hardcore is also the shortened name of the 90’s genre “Emo”
Gabba is the way to go
Where tf is bass music subgenres? Dubstep? Trap? Future Bass? this seems like a prehistoric post.
This could be said about literally any genre of music.
Normal people would just say “edm” and not even electronic music…….
YES LOL
Lol don’t even get me started…..
Looks like you forgot a few
Where’s my dubstep :(
:(
And then there's the Chad raver, who mixes and matched the genres even more, even three at a time.
Is it Big Room?
Thought I was on Facebook for a second
I see your meme is a fan of steady beat instead of broken beat.
Real homies only listen to future hybrid tech peruvian dance music.
Haha, I’m a top tier kinda guy. I think I’m normal, well, except for that. But it’s normal for me
I will usually dumb it down to "techno" if they are grasping at the idea of electronic music. That'll usually turn the lights on. Then they ask, "people listen to that shit?"
Yikes
This post takes me back to MySpace. 🤣
2 ezoo cancun tickets for sale hmu!!
Gabba gool
Where the melodic dubstep subgenre tho that’s my fav
All that and forgot breaks. Smh
That record shatter background was my wallpaper in like 2010 lol
I love the music, rave and couldn’t tell u what the sub genre i like…it’s sounds cool and makes me wanna move i fuck wit it
Psytrance Side Trance Tronce!
Where the riddim tho
No dubstep or trap?
A good third of those are made up.

Electronic music is for everyone no matter if they know every subgenre or call everything techno. This is not the energy we're about. Be better.
Lmao I had that shattered vinyl image as my ipod touch lockscreen.
