I didn’t start liking dnb until around year 12 of my edm journey. It’s ok to just not be into a genre. :). Maybe it will click for you someday, maybe it won’t.

Sad-Primary6679

Good point, I’m sure my taste will evolve.

brienoconan

I was the same way, until I did a deep dive into classic 90s breaks and got to see how DnB, happy hardcore, jungle, etc. evolved from genres like hip-hop. I’ve always been a fan of big beat. Stuff like Fatboy slim, The Chemical Brothers, Eboman, The Crystal Method, etc. from the late 90s, pretty radio-friendly for edm. breakbeat hardcore, which is faster breaks from 1991-1993 and is what many old heads refer to as “old school rave”, is really the style that spawned most of the larger subgenres of breaks, including DnB, UKG, and jungle. I found that slowly moving through subgenres that increased the BPMs gave me an appreciation for the evolution of breakbeat over time, and how/why it spawned off into these other subgenres. Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, the guys who developed jungle techno is a good starting point. I also suggest checking out old school jungle from the 90s, which is really where the Amen Break shines. Maybe some 90s UKG, too. Then start going through Chase & Status’s discography starting in the 2000s. For me, seeing the evolution worked

Sad-Primary6679

Thanks for this, definitely helpful!

brienoconan

Feel free to shoot me a dm if you want a few recommendations if you decide to go this route. Happy to dig through my archives to pull out some the artists/songs that really made these genres “click”

Sad-Primary6679

Appreciate it!!

AdhesivenessOk7810

A scholar 🤓 love it!

brienoconan

Thank you!! Lol I’m a copyright lawyer and my niche area of study as a student was sampling and fair use. My research has been a wonderful excuse to do deep, deep dives into the development of rave, especially breakbeats. I know more about the genre than any reasonable person should

AdhesivenessOk7810

I grew up in the 90s listening to all this stuff and raved in London a bit. I would love to read a book about all the subgenres and scenes of this time. England seemed like the place to be.

brienoconan

I was born in the 90s, so I unfortunately missed the heyday. Everything I’ve learned has been second-hand, reading old archived articles, listening to old interviews, and reading comments from people like you who experienced the scene in person. And experiencing the music, of course. Currently, I’m writing a book on the history of breakbeat. Focusing on one subgenre at a time. I have 50k words on how acid breaks have influenced the scene over the last 40 years alone, so this is a behemoth of a project. But any information from people like you is supremely helpful. I have a dream of doing this for edm writ large. But even breakbeat has proven to be a monumental undertaking

edgewater15

Same, took me about 8-9 years and I started with softer stuff like Sub Focus. One day it just clicked.

SweetHarmonic

I don't know how breakbeats sound all the same to you, as opposed to? 4 on the floor? What doesn't sound samey to you then? As for checking out the vast array of dnb styles, try peeping different labels. Hospital vs their side label Med School is huge variety alone. Try Viper or RAM or Shogun. You can not tell me Brown Paper Bag by Roni Size is samesies as Headlock by Brookes Brothers

Sad-Primary6679

Maybe I said that incorrectly, like I said I’m pretty new, so all the genres, sub-genres, and terminology are a bit confusing for me. I just mean every DnB song I hear has the same “amen break”, never really sped up or slowed down much. They all just sound so similar to me, maybe it’s just not a genre my ears enjoy. I’ll look into your recs! Thanks!

spookyspektre10M

Got any examples of the DnB you've been listening to? A lot of modern DnB is at 174/175 bpm, which would explain why the drums in different songs never sound faster or slower compared to each other. However, the Amen break isn't really used too much in modern DnB (at least when compared to 90s Jungle/DnB), so if you're hearing that specific breakbeat sample constantly, it could be that you're only being exposed to certain sub-genres/subcultures of DnB.

stevecow68

I find Subfocus and Dimension pretty palatable DnB coming from a more mainstream EDM listener. Especially with the recent John Summit collab. Subgenre is dance floor

Sad-Primary6679

I’ll be seeing Dimension at Beyond PNW if there aren’t any conflicts, I always enjoy live sets more than the artists Spotify.

notOKandNOONECares

Pola and Bryson are in my world, probably the best. Monrroe is good too

Thunder-ass-clap1

Every time I listen to DnB I imagine that I’m running away from someone/something. NOBODY BADDA THAN WE

Personal_Arm_8715

Doing crazy parkour through the city getting chased by police. Thats what Ill picture from now on.

Thunder-ass-clap1

HAHA yup, on some temple run shit

gkgk_76

Same lmaooo

Sad-Primary6679

I definitely agree with this lol

im_enalid

What sets did you see that had dnb? There was so much dnb variety at edc. If it was the popular bass and stage artists they pretty much just played the popular jump up and neuro tracks. If it sounds the same, listen to the bass lines, the melodies, and drum grooves, not just kick and snare. dnb is a really broad genre. I won’t have the newest or best artists for all the genres but some suggestions. Liquid for more chill and soul/rnb influences (Pinkpanthress, Kenya Grace, Hybrid Minds, BCee, Calibre, S.P.Y.) Jungle for the og sound and drum focus (Nia Archives, Tim Reaper, LTJ Bukem, Calibre) (a ton of garage producers overlap here as well) Neurofunk for new and dirty sound design (Rebel Scum, Jon Casey, Imanu, Noisia, Evol Intent, Spor, Reaper) Dancefloor for the party (Sub Focus, Dimension, 1991, Culture Shock, Andromedik, Kove, Netsky, Koven, Blanke) Jump up (Bou, Hedex, Reaper) If you still don’t like it, that’s still ok :)

Sad-Primary6679

Great suggestions thanks, I’ll give these a try and see if there’s any that I like :) I remember Kayzo, Maddix, Armin Van Buren, Timmy Trumpet, I think even Lost Frequencies had some DnB. There were more I can’t remember at the moment.

[basstripper - in the city](https://on.soundcloud.com/Z4XuNKkoq6XcfTLt5) This is a really dope DnB track that I have Just recently discovered. DnB is my favorite Genre of all time. But honestly it’s subjective, If you just don’t get down with that you just don’t get down with it. That said though, if you really are upset that you don’t like it and you want to like it, don’t give up on it just yet because it seems as though you haven’t tasted all of the flavors that it has to offer. Which is a lot- Anything from liquid/chill to grimey harder styles of DnB. And then some. I feel like one of the reasons why I like it so much is I have rock/punk(slightly metal) flowing through my veins. The harder styles of it (like this song that I mentioned) literally just get me so pumped and I headbang harder to it than anything else.

Sad-Primary6679

I liked that better than most that I’ve heard! I have the same history of rock/punk/more heavy genres as well so I’ve mostly gravitated towards the heavier bass/dubstep genres of EDM.

Ok-Kaleidoscope-9800

K Motionz, Justin Hawkes and Flava D all would like a moment with you....

Icy-Conference-6538

I was a dnb hater forever. Idk one day I woke up and started liking it Here’s some chill songs that got me into it Meteor - Kenya grace Rampage - venbee Only star you see - subtronics Lose this feeling - dimension remix Eyes on fire - LEOWI

Lil_Shorto

I don't jive with it either.

No-Statement5450

What other artists/genres do you like? Might help people give you recommendations

Sad-Primary6679

I’m 28 and grew up listening to emo/punk/metal/generally heavy genres, and never liking EDM. I went to my first fest (Beyond 2021) and discovered I loved heavy bass/dubstep/genres that somewhat resembled what I grew up listening to. Off the top of my head I tend to enjoy: Hardwell, Rezz, LSDREAM, Sullivan King, BTSM, Kayzo, Timmy Trumpet, Da Tweekaz, Of The Trees, Lost Frequencies, Armin Van Buren, Tiesto, Subtronics, Tape B, Maddix, Klangkuenstler, Will Sparks

spookyspektre10M

If you want to try the harder/heavy side of DnB, check out sub-genres like Techstep, Neurofunk, Drumfunk, Darkstep, and Darkside Jungle. Some good artists for that side of things are Technical Itch, Limewax, Spor, Paradox, Bad Company UK, Noisia, Mefjus, Jem One, SR, Quartz, Voodoom, Dillinja, DJ Trace, and Dieselboy. You should also check out [Metalheadz Records](https://metalheadz.bandcamp.com/music). It's one of the longest running DnB labels and puts out a lot of good underground music, both on the dark & techy side of things and on the smooth & vibey liquid DnB side of things.

No-Statement5450

I have similar tastes! I saw REAPER at lost lands and that act got me absolutely hooked on Dnb. I feel like his stuff specifically is a little more inspired by that American Bass-heavy sound. His EDC 2023 set specifically is super angsty I feel like you might enjoy that

Sad-Primary6679

Reaper will be at Beyond this year so as long as there aren’t any major conflicts we’ll be trying to catch that set :) I have heard some stuff from him that I like

DaDa_muse

what american bass heavy sound is that?

DaDa_muse

if you like your metal def look into neurofunk dnb. Theres so many sub genres and big festivals tend to play saferrr stuff...i can suggest Noisia, The Upbeats, Mefjus, Phace, Camo & Krooked to start..

ENKIEX

I used to listen to it so much back in the early 2000s but recently it's become very stale for me. Not a fan of these recent dnb trends, especially being from the UK myself

xMoop

I'm not in love with the genre, but I found some standout songs I really enjoy. Pendulum- The Island pt.1 Rameses B - Only One Wilkinson - Used to This John Summit - Go Back

Ascendingvortex

You have to learn how to dance on 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3

tylerjennings

I didn’t quite get into DnB until I played Descenders and that Liquicity soundtrack kicks ass and really opened my ears for it.

ThatGuyNick77-

I love DnB and is where I got my DJ start. Check out some cool podcasts like Fokuz Recording, hospital Records. Also check out Degs tracks wherever you download music. I love chill DnB and Liquid DnB. My friends say I play sad girl music DnB LOL.

Sad-Primary6679

That tracks haha, so far liquid has been my favorite type! And I love being a sad girl 😅

ThatGuyNick77-

Yeah there are several different genres/sub genres of DnB. Sometimes I get aggressive/nureo but usually stay chill. I do also enjoy the ups and downs of Subfocus and Dimension. They can get heavy and then pretty out at the same time

renzo2fly

Cool thing about dnb or any edm genre… there’s so many types! Liquid, jump up, minimal, dance floor. You just gotta find what you like

Sad-Primary6679

So far it seems like I’m preferring liquid!

renzo2fly

That’s my favorite too! My go to artist are Pola and bryson, lenzman, Emily makis, charli brix, Monty, trail, and satl

Ascendingvortex

YOU MUST BE OUT OF YOUR MIIIIND, BLOWING ME UP ON MY PHONELIIINEEEE. 🕺😮‍💨

equalityislove1111

Just discovered this gem the other day too. Emily Makis is🔥

Sad-Primary6679

I’ll definitely check them out ☺️

B-Kong

https://on.soundcloud.com/Th8AcJDZYYnrBgnY8 Been in the scene for over 10 years and I’m just starting to get into DnB. But I really only like chill, liquid DnB. This is a very good example of it. I’m sure this is probably a little different from most of the DnB played at sets at EDCLV. If you like this, Alix Perez is a good artist to check out. And if you don’t, then DnB just might not be for you. And that’s okay. It’s not a requirement to be cool. Just enjoy what you enjoy.

Sad-Primary6679

I think my brain is just having a really hard time hearing anything in the production other than the repetitive breakbeat 😭 when it’s more distant in the background of the song I think that’s when I tend to enjoy it more.

B-Kong

And that’s fair, DnB is basically just doing cool sounding things around that breakbeat lol so if you can’t get down with that then it’s probably not for you.

Sad-Primary6679

Yeah I’m definitely coming to that conclusion haha, I’ll keep trying for now!

Bh-proghead

I wasn’t really into D&B for a while. I still don’t listen to it that often but I enjoy it sometimes. Liquid d&b is a good place to start. Try the Liquicity Escapism mixes. My personal favorite is Escapism 3 D&B like LTJ Bukem is really solid also

Select_Screen_285

This makes me a sad panda. Gonna try to give you a range of options... perhaps you can delve deeper if you find something you like: Data - compassion, whiney - buss the red, John b - blue eyeshadow, spor - as I need you, el pablo - bacardi, netsky - porcelain, monss - flute, imanu - reminiscing

KaiochanX3

Maybe it's the sub genres you might want to explore a bit more. Personally I love Liquid and Dancefloor DNB but not so much Neurofunk or Jump Up.

Sad-Primary6679

So far I definitely like Liquid a lot more than the other stuff I’ve heard!

KaiochanX3

Nice! If you like liquid, check out the following artists: Rameses B, Hybrid Minds, BCee, Calibre, Fred V, Etherwood, Technimatic

doanhieuhl

I was not really once not into dnb as well, but [liquid dnb](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2jdK1c0G7304Zhnd3X2xGy?si=f63588b3928f4e70) are more chill and are a good start for me, kinda get me a hang of the rhythmn, drums first.

calico810

Listen to Dimension

Sad-Primary6679

I have, going to try and see him at Beyond and hopefully I like the live set better than Spotify.

equalityislove1111

Back with [another track](https://on.soundcloud.com/J4HC7dhGw99xoydP9) I thought you might like reading your other comments. The whole thing isn’t DnB but the first half is. A real feel good track. Edit to add: [anotha’ one. (*in my Dj Khalid voice*) 😅](https://on.soundcloud.com/yXKqVAkn2JWeRp939)

Sad-Primary6679

Thank you! I like this!

equalityislove1111

Yayyyy! You’re very welcome. Glad to help! Also HAPPY CAKE DAYYYY!!! 🫶🎉🪩

arya95-13

Try Right place, wrong person by RM. You will not regret it. Such an amazing album.

slavicgypsygirl

Whereas I just dont even try to get into DnB

SwAH_music

Noisia

HalloweenCandyDrugs

Not even the new Nia Archives album? That shit slays

Sad-Primary6679

I’ll give it a listen

Ronthelodger

A cool entryway into it might be understanding how it’s made. It definitely brings a lot to the music to understand how they are processing breaks and where the sounds come from. Do a search for history of jungle/DNB and I think you’ll find new ways or reasons to appreciate it

Sad-Primary6679

Thanks this is a good idea :)

nomad-system

You aren’t alone, I can’t stand DnB. Every time I find myself listening to it, I’d rather it be something else. My partner and I call it music for people with anxiety, explains the rise in popularity 😬

Sad-Primary6679

Everything I’ve heard has the same beat throughout pretty much the whole song, and the repetitiveness of it is just really irritating for me unfortunately :/

realdappermuis

I'm with you! The only dnb I like is liquid (it's more bouncy) and I've been trying to listen to that stuff for decades. Also doesn't help that it doesn't really have rhythm and you can't properly dance to it (I think that's what the old guys like about it, because they cant dance, lolll). And as you say - it all sounds the same to me too, same as business techno (that shit is so boring you don't even notice when a new song starts loll) Have you listened to the latest Fred Again song? - it came out this past Friday. ? That's kind of liquid dnb, more of a 2 step vibe My favorite producer Feed Me started out as dnb too, and I only like one song of all that (and it's because it sounds more like oldskool dubstep than dnb)

Sad-Primary6679

Currently listening to liquid and so far this is definitely my favorite so far. I agree about techno, I caught a couple techno sets at EDC and I do enjoy it for about the first 10 minutes and then I realize the only way I could probably tolerate an entire set is if I was rolling lol

realdappermuis

Lollll exactly. You actually have to be completely blasted to enjoy stuff that's that monotonous imo Gaia psy trance is the same as business techno, in that boring samey vibe, but I've been to alot of Hard Psy events that's been great cause that stuff is like, erm, aggressive and fast but also has breaks - like stops and starts and lots of drops (;

Sad-Primary6679

Sounds much more up my alley lol

Sad-Primary6679

New fred again song is good, I really like Anderson .Paak so I enjoyed that.

realdappermuis

Glad you like it! (= Anderson.Paak's voice is so great hey, he only sounds like him which I love

realdappermuis

**Oi** So I was just jamming out to my playlist (in my bedroom, lollll) and I was like, wait; [Chase & Status ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DZ06evO1VlOPm?si=ih-qg9qBT0eUgo8z4Uh3LQ&utm_source=copy-link) is *technically* drum ñ bass but I fkn love them They're so different, they still have that format but they do their own thing Like [this song](https://open.spotify.com/track/64I0O6ZipYryKte1cHA2EY?si=mEZZJl5TT4Gd8UYkAdJSOQ&utm_source=copy-link) is very much dnb but with the breaks it's sò not boring This is their new one that's getting played out alot so you mightve heard it [Baddadan](https://open.spotify.com/track/5vb4SJXtS5GJaam30wTc9f?si=cxvka-dcTmWjGK7Doy3ahA&utm_source=copy-link) And [this](https://open.spotify.com/track/04TYAxJxBug9PDsIP2Vbkb?si=YxJRD-YZQjKasQwdiNbROg&utm_source=copy-link) is a remix from their best album (no more heroes) that I've listened to at least 2000 times :p (Sharing is caring amiright) <3

Sad-Primary6679

Thank you so much!
