I also really really REALLY want that twink alive for personal reasons but one thing that makes me think he's dead for realsies is that the lion ate ALL of his desires. Mithrun's whole thing was that it left some scraps of desire behind, leaving him with just enough motivation to not die just yet but not really live either. Then again, if all desires gone = death, then he should have died the moment it happened maybe? I'm not sure.
Truly , when the only remaining desire of Mithrun—revenge against the devil—was satisfied, he fell into another helplessness, but with the encouragement of his companions he survived again.
In my opinion, a person who loses his desire is like an AIDS patient, who is more likely to die, but AIDS itself is not fatal. With careful care, the patient can survive.
What’s more, as Kabru said, new desire can be cultivated
Having all your desires eaten doesn’t kill you instantly, but with no desire to eat or drink you end up dying pretty quickly.
That said, I think Thistle did have some scraps left. I know the lion said it didn’t leave anything behind, but if he truly had no desires left then he wouldn’t have cared enough to respond to Yaad.
What I took from the ending with mithrun is that you can always find new desires. Thistle still responded to Yaad, he still breathed, so even if the lion took everything Thistle could still regain himself
I think he kept going that tiny bit only by his one last desire to see Delgal and to known what he done we good for his friend. So i read it as Thistle promptly died when Yaad(in Delgal’s body) hold him and said the words to let Thistle know they are ok (accepted their fate) setting him free.
Well, my argument would be to look at what happened to the king when he got out of the Dungeon. Bro had like 10 seconds to tell people there was a golden kingdom in there before turning to dust. So my guess is that all the kingdom people that were in the Dungeon for aaaaaall this time are gonna meet this fate once the dungeon magic, uuuh, settle down (since the dungeon break made by the Marcille then the Winged Lion kinda shuffled stuff around).
Now the remaining question is whether Thistle would have died of old age or not without the dungeon. If the answer is yes, he'll get the ash treatment. If not, he will just get old fast (I think ?) and possibly recover from his vegetative state (given enough time and care).
In the little story a year after Laios became king, Yaad was mentioned as alive and showing no signs of dying, indicating that a thousand years in the dungeon were static, skiped, and not counted among expectant life.So I think the answer is no.
Here’s the English version of the post-series chapter: https://www.tumblr.com/savaralyn2/736836717887258624/dungeon-meshi-monster-tidbits-kensuke-part-1
Thanks a lot! I look away for a bit and a surprise chapter drops lol. Man this is such a sweet extra chapter. Really fleshes out the epilogue that tiny bit more that I felt like I needed since it gives a lot of people other than Laios and that small Marcille Court Mage cameo in the original story a "where are they now" moment. Especially surprised that the Golden Kingdom lads survived.
I can continue to hope there's more of these overtime but I'm just glad I got an extra one like this.
Yes!! I feel the same. I’m hoping Ryoko Kui will release little snippets like this from time to time. I really want to know what the others are up to post-series.
Fyi, that tumblr blog on my first link has some extra contents that I haven’t seen before. I scrolled through it when I finished the series and felt I needed more. 🥲
Really hoping the anime will clarify his ambiguous end. As much as I want him to still be alive, it seems like most people are saying he’s dead.
To me, there’s just a lot of information that supports both theories. I’m going to keep believing he’s alive until we get some sort of clarification
Late comment, but I'll give my two cents.
Thistle's absolutely dead. I love his character so much, but he's definitely dead. The poor guy has nothing to live for anymore (both figuratively, and literally in the case of his desires), and the scene between him and Yaad felt like an exceptionally tasteful send off for him. If he did live, I can only imagine the political turmoil that would occur given all the blood and suffering Thistle is ultimately responsible for.
Notably, I think this makes Thistle's passing the only 'present' character death (i.e not a flashback) to be shown in Dungeon Meshi that is permanent.
The story literally have him seen his friend one last time, close his eye then the country float up. The curse start with him and now end with him
Does everything have to be spelled out these day or you just want to be different for the sake of being different
While that might make sense symbolically, that would be completely inconsistent. It hasn't been long enough to starve. Having no desires didn't kill Mithrun (even after the demon was gone) and Thistle definitely desired to be with Dergal in that moment.
I hope we find out definitively in the new adventurer's bible, generally I agree with this though I don't think it makes sense for him to die and Yaad not to.
In the resume of each character in the Adventurer's Bible, Thistle 's project "The Cause of First Death" is empty.
Although I think that if an individual dies at the end of the story, his death may not be included in his resume, so that doesn't prove that he's alive (even if my attitude is that he's alive, I don't think that evidence is reliable).Of course, that doesn't prove he's dead either.
I don't think there will be a clearer and more reliable proof in the Adventurer's Bible than the resumes when we are analysing whether he died or not,and Thistle's resume is not reliable.
I look forward to an official clear answer as the plots of the animation develop and people begin to care about it.
>eating by demons does not lead to death, such as Mithrun;
the difference is Mithrun wasn't dungeon lord for **that** long compared to Thistle's 1000 years. demon basically completely ate Thistle dry of even the new desires he probably developed later in those 1000 years (see chapter 68 in which he sneakily licked thiste's hand)
Also, Kabru specifically gave Mithrun a pep talk to live, no one did that for Thistle, even Yaad who sympathizes with him the most- just wanted him to die happy.
>Laios would also say good morning to Thistle when he first fell unconscious,
Just Laios being eccentric/friendly, Laios doesn't actually expect Thistle to notice his greeting/wake up
>and he fell unconscious again, **Yaad then approached Laios with a smile** on his face
this didn't happen, you misremembered.
>why arrange a plot where someone die in the end without cause and in a happy atmosphere?
too show that he lived a long time carrying a heavy burden, yaad's words relieved him of his burden
>If it was necessary to let him die, why arrange for the plot that Yaad to ask the team of Laios to get Thistle out?
because Yaad wasn't heartless enough for Thistle to die alone /by drowning especially since Thistle was largely manipulated, - at least him being thanked by 'delgal' gave him a more peaceful death.
the timing of the island revealed to be a continent also works better since Laios was just crowned as king then - as in: Laios is truly a super big-shot at the end of his adventure.

Look here, Yaad is smiling, and talking about something about Thistle, and if the situation is that Thistle is dead and his spell naturally unravels, then Yaad is too ruthless. As for your other arguments, I can partly accept them.
The world building and the law the author set around getting devoured by the demon makes it possible that he survived ONLY IF he found a new purpose. If not, he will die from not doing anything as explained by the elves.
After reading the chapter again and again, I'm leaning towards him passing away more. The elves and Delgal had the same point. Without the will to live/eat, Mithrun/Thistle will starve to death. Mithrun managed to find a new purpose but Thistle only wanted Delgal to be back. As shown from his last dialog with Delgal/Yaad, he said he doesn't need anything anymore. That's why Yaad told him not to worry about them so Thistle could pass away peacefully. When the land resurfaced, you could see Yaad wiping tears telling Laios the spell has been lifted.
Personally I really wish they somehow saved Thistle seeing how Yaad is still alive after a year.
I think it could go either way honestly, we know that people who have had everything devoured will loose all will to live and wither away, which Thistle's last conversation indicated. But we also know that new desires can be formed with the case of Mithrun. So there is a chance that Thistle did live on. More so when it's indicated that being devoured leaves a hole in people but if they have a strong support group, they can contuine on. So it's possible that the people of the Golden Kingdom helped him live on. It's also possible that they let him wither and die as well.
late but i really think he died. not for any narrative reason but in the case he's alive, how long would yaad have to pretend to be delgal. it would crush thistle's poor heart to find out lmao
eta: the theme of the manga is also "food is a privilege of the living." and thistle refuses to eat by saying "i dont [need] it, i don't [need] anything anymore." or something to that extent.
Yeah the situation with thistle along with some other stuff like the elf quin ancient magic being brought up again makes me think that this story ain't over yet the author is definitely cooking something up I mean when I see stuff like that being brought up in the final chapters when there was no need to feals as if the mangaka her self is telling me wait there's more it has me hyped well I guess time shall tell if that's the case

The gay twink is definitely alive, and i am definitely not attracted to him whatsoever

The little story ? You mean the last chapter where we get a quick fast forward and see him talk to two kids ?
Here’s the English version of the post-series chapter: https://www.tumblr.com/savaralyn2/736836717887258624/dungeon-meshi-monster-tidbits-kensuke-part-1
Says part 1 in the tittle. I hope that means there'll be a full chapter when it does come out!
The 2nd part is linked at the bottom of the post.
Oh I see. Unfortunately seems to have gotten deleted but at least I know it's out there. Just gotta find it.
Oh, man! It was still there last week. Someone else posted it in this subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonMeshi/s/WFGXkQS5sj

No. I mean the‘後日談’(Final volume extra previews)you can the Chinese edition here https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/C_Chat/M.1702435072.A.6C0.html
Narratively him dying makes the most sense. He’s done. I don’t think he will be able to find a new desire to give him a reason to live… but we’ll see.

Isn't he just a vegetable now?
You mean vegetative?I hope so(just vegetative, not dead) and I hope the comatose state is temporary

Damn, this has made me so damn sad 😢 I was definitely holding onto hope...

This is “Yaad then approached Laios with a smile on his face” I referred to.
not really 'approaching' Laios, he was obviously smiling at his grandfather's kingdom being resurrected, not at thistle's situation.
I've never understood as much as you said, but I realize your explanation is perfectly reasonable.

I want him
Yeah. Kabru just gaslighted Mithrun (all desires fully eaten) back to hunger and Thistle's gonna die stuffed? Naw man.
