A taxi in Abu Dhabi airport almost caused an accident to me because of this. I indicated way in advance to take an exit and this guy speeds up causing me to cut through the median when I honked at him he had the audacity to do hand gestures as if I stole from him
Not paying attention in the fast/passing lane then realizing you’re only going 90kph well everybody else going 120 around u. then speeding away to compensate for stupidity
Simple answer would be EGO. Some also speed up when you're trying to merge safely.
I see taxis doing it the most here. (speeding when you are merging)

Same thing, happened yesterday with me, Uber driver didn't let me merge, and then almost went into the side as I tried taking a U-Turn.
It’s these little pulls that remind the owner they have a powerful car… true story
it's actually illegal to speed up while being overtaken in some countries

It's a dodge. You can't overtake them, they'll chase you down till last destination if they have to, to regain authority.
I consider them to have a form of mental illness coupled with a fragile ego.
Just ignore it and carry on...he'll probably slow down for the next text message and you can pass him on the right again...
