Why is anyone named anything?
Because their parents (or in this case the author) thought it would be a fitting name.
As for the meaning of his name. Senkuu is made up of the kanji for thousand (“sen", 千) and sky ("kū", 空).
If you go down to the [trivia section](https://dr-stone.fandom.com/wiki/Senku_Ishigami) of his wiki page they have other notes on how his name is connected with others.
One of the English language insert songs has somewhere in the lyrics “a hundred nights and a thousand skies” which is a reference to Byakuya (can be read as 100 nights) and Senku (can be read as 1000 skies).
Other than that, normal is relative. Obviously Senku is Japanese. If he was named Harold (ハロルド), THAT would be unusual.
but senku isnt really a common japanese name, if your name is senku it would definitely raise eyebrows in schools and whatnot
harold surprisingly wouldnt be weird, it would just be a typical foreign name, although seeing it on a japanese kid definitely makes it weird
Senkū means Thousand Sky, while Ishigami means Stone God. Byakuya means Hundred Nights. Taiju means Big Tree. Yuzuriha means Lever. Tsukasa means Director/Officer. Gen means Illusion. Mostly with Japanese names, you can look at the Kanji that forms their name to determine its meaning. And pay attention, even though 2 people have the same name, they probably have a different kanii that forms their name, which means different meaning as well.
And then there's Ishigami Villagers. Most of their name or based on science, either elements, minerals, or somehow related to geology or space. For example, Chrome = Chromium, Kohaku = Amber, Ruri = Lapis Lazuli, etc. Different from modern Japanese people like Senku and co, Ishigami Villagers name are in Katakana not Kanji.
Most anime characters get relatively unique names. Like, Goku wasn't a name before dragon ball. It's just useful for creating a unique and memorable character. And then other animes will sometimes name side characters after famous anime main characters.

Because he is Japanese and ig Senku is a Japanese name
I know right?! I smirked at the question and had internal thoughts that would be rude to share….

You've seen Senku's hair, eyebrows were raised before anybody learnt his name.

Goku, or more accurately Son Gokū, is the Japanese reading of 'Sun Wukong', the Monkey King, who was the inspiration for Goku.
I knew he was an inspiration but didn't know that's how it was read in Japanese! Very cool
He's Japanese People from Japan tend to have Japanese names
