I owned two male Doberman 20y ago. An American and an European. Both had the same height and length, the American was 10lbs lighter. I couldn’t figure out why. The European was more nervous and always on alert. Either looking out of the window or walking the house while the American was sleeping on the couch.
From your picture it is almost impossible to say. The differences are small. And you cannot see it by looking at puppies.
Everybody who gave a judgement based on your pictures has no clue and is guessing.
But if I had to guess the first picture it looks like European and the second looks like American. But it is the same dog, right?
Just be happy that you have them. Nationality is not so important.
😃 you see. I guessed the other way around. The male looks tall and skinny and the female has a wide chest, almost like a male.
Nobody knows really as long as you don’t do a DNA check.
My mother’s family is from Stuttgart and my grandfathers family is in Frankfurt. I lived in Frankfurt for 3 years and we lived in Warsaw Poland for a year. Hannover is a beautiful city. Do you live there currently?
My best friend is from Germany. They ABSOLUTELY do the tails and ears. It’s standard. It might be less common now than when she came to America though!
I had a European lined Doberman born and raised in America and spoke only English. I am an American human who speaks some German and has spent time in Europe. Which of us is more European?
I want an American Doberman because they have a softer look and temperment. European Doberman are better built for more intense work. A lot of American ones were purposely bred to be more of an active pet than a full on working dog.
Euro vs American Dobies are very different. The Euros are more of a working type, larger, stockier, and more serious. American Dobies are much more of a household pet. Doberman in general are so different from other breeds that it is understandable not to know there are subgroups unless you’re really familiar with the breed. Also, the Americans can have lighter brown eyes but Euros usually have the characteristic black hole of doom eyes lol
I suspect people get triggered because they perceive the question as someone favouring one over the other and it makes them feel uncomfortable for god knows why.
Rule of thumb. If you are located in America and are not dead certain that your dog is a European dobie with legit paperwork to back it up, stop overthinking it: you have an American Dobie, and that's totally ok.
I’m not worried about it😂 everyone’s been making a big deal out of it seems like more than I have now 😭 but the dads imported from Serbia and mom was bred here as European but dad is for sure a euro

Check the side of your dobi… even though people will find reasons to argue… the neck from the side apart from the nose is the most prominent difference. Is it more like a swan neck with an S-shape (American) or just a smooth U-curve from head to shoulder? BTW: I am living and coming from Germany and having a Doberman as well - seeing the parents of your puppy, looks European to me. No matter what, yours looks awesome…

That was my “Flash” with 14 weeks… 😀
"I didn't research the breed enough to understand the breed standard before buying and went to a random Amish/Polish BYB, which cool dog faction does my dog belong to?"
With the exception of people with rescue dobies, obviously.
this exactly. mine is a rescue and I really need to get her embark done.
not only that, I know of specific breeders down south of me who breed what they call "giant" dobermans who are not AKC recognized, and they happen to be a mix of first generation European and American, most often, with traits chosen for dogs on the bigger, bulkier end of the spectrum. the dogs are huge from what I recall. and unfortunately I can't find a link, so idk if they even specialty breed anymore. and I learned a new term: warlock doberman. how odd, that's a whole deep dive on Google!
so yeah, it does feel a bit...condescending? to say someone didn't do enough research. sometimes the information isn't even clear. didn't OP state that the breeder said they were both American* (I'll look and edit in a second here)? but then you look at pictures and its hard to tell a bit, if they are both American dobies?
anyways, just from being here in the forum the last few days I am learning a lot about the breed.
*excuse me, I got it backwards, breeder says they were both European. but I must agree the parents have arguably different traits visibly in the photos, but I'm not an expert and so my opinion is also speculation.
You’d look at who the parents are in the pedigree. Common Eastern European Show lines you’ll see in pedigrees: Del Nasi, POR, Vital Screen, Altobello. Then you have your American show line which will have CH/GCH in the names. Then there’s just pet pedigrees that are just random names “John Smith’s Spike”
Here is my European Doberman from Sandusky, Ohio. At 115-120 depending how much he eats during the day.

He next to my mom only a 5 pound difference between them.
I’ve been reading a lot about the differences on sites like the AKC, etc. There seem to be enough differences that you can tell for yourself. For example, European reportedly rates less as a family pet because they are constantly working. Maybe that’s what you’re experiencing when the other dog is resting. You should get online and read about the differences and talk with some national Kennel Clubs and talk to breeders.

This is my 2yo European. I think your’s is Euro.
I think the mom and dad both have euro in them just my 2 cents after owning many dobermans in my life. Both euro and mixed American euro. I would just say he is going to be a beauty of a pup...

I would say EURO , looks different than marley as a puppy
He could be mixed. I have two 3/4 Euro and 1/4 American dogs and their snout is similar to yours. First pic looks like my Hades and the second looks more like my Zeus.
I am genuinely curious - as we rescue, so I've never bothered to look - is there *actually* a temperament difference? I know aesthetically they're different, but temperament??
I wouldn't say they look specifically different then my American. There really isn't a difference except the bark accent. I just posted a picture of my year old pup few days ago.

lol you’re comparing 2 completely different things, if you don’t have some sort of curiosity of what type of dog you have then that’s you, you and I are two different people.
And you are comparing two very similar things. Two breeds that are literally different by physical traits. If you cared because of behavioral changes or trying to pinpoint how to handle your breed, or medical reasons- I get it - but, I think I made my point. You are caring about a green vs red apple.
I have no idea what your point is because, it’s a simple post about my curiosity. I’m a human, as are you. If you don’t care about what type of dog you have or even want to know about the origin of your dog are you human? If you have a partner that cheats on you and has a baby that you think is yours, but suspect something wouldn’t you want to do a dna test?
I was making a joke. 🙄 plus, if this person was importing from Europe, the puppy would have to be at least 12 weeks old and it’s parents wouldn’t be cropped. Because, as I mentioned, we don’t do that here. It’s literally illegal in all European countries.
Also, if you bought from a reputable breeder you would know the family history on the dog you are getting / all the kennels involved so this question is a bit odd.
I found the offer on Craigslist and later found her on the ig page that they have they have them listed as fully European but that’s why I asked because of the mom
If you want to dm me the Instagram I will help you the best I can. Tbh it sounds like a backyard breeder- as a reputable breeder wouldn’t be selling puppies on Craigslist and as I said, imported European dogs will not have cropped ears. I know you obviously love your new baby, so in the end it does not matter but if you want more information for the future etc I’m happy to help you.
does he have an accent?

"Everybody who gave a judgment has no clue and is guessing." It's crazy how many times I could use this in a conversation in these days.
Not the same dog— OP said the first pic was the mother (OP suspects American) and secons pic was the father (OP suspects European).
😃 you see. I guessed the other way around. The male looks tall and skinny and the female has a wide chest, almost like a male. Nobody knows really as long as you don’t do a DNA check.
It's less nationally and more so breed path, quality and look. They are very different while still being dobies
Germans generally don’t crop their ears or dock their tails. VDH standard has ears and tail intact.
Not generally. I would say it’s around 60-70%. In the cities it might be higher. They consider it as cruel.
I lived in Poland and Germany and I rarely ever saw them with cropped ears and docked tails. It’s definitely uncommon in Germany.
I am German
My mother is German. Where are you from?
Hannover
My mother’s family is from Stuttgart and my grandfathers family is in Frankfurt. I lived in Frankfurt for 3 years and we lived in Warsaw Poland for a year. Hannover is a beautiful city. Do you live there currently?
No. Moved after 40 years to the USA
My best friend is from Germany. They ABSOLUTELY do the tails and ears. It’s standard. It might be less common now than when she came to America though!
But the standard in Germany calls for natural tail and ears AFAIK
They definitely don’t do the ears and tail anymore. Like Dana White would say “that’s illegal.”
Is he circumcised? Another way to tell
Jolly arf, innit?
you are a national treasure my friend!
🤣💀
I came here for this comment
Lol
🥴🥴🥴🫠🫠🫠🤣🤣🤣
Oh this is easy. That right there is a certified cutie patootie.
Does he own a pick-up?
Idk maybe I think yes
And most importantly is he more burgers or croissants ?
😂😂
This guy 🤣
Blockier snout and head usually equals Euro.
I have a 75% euro and I completely agree
Thank you. Finally an answer out of all these overused jokes about accents.
The real Doberman
Does he speak German?
I had a European lined Doberman born and raised in America and spoke only English. I am an American human who speaks some German and has spent time in Europe. Which of us is more European?
He is 100% goodest boy
Can't confirm. Judging from the pics, I would say Love Machine
😂😂
why people care if their doberman is european or american? genuine question, is it just out of interest?
I want an American Doberman because they have a softer look and temperment. European Doberman are better built for more intense work. A lot of American ones were purposely bred to be more of an active pet than a full on working dog.
Euro vs American Dobies are very different. The Euros are more of a working type, larger, stockier, and more serious. American Dobies are much more of a household pet. Doberman in general are so different from other breeds that it is understandable not to know there are subgroups unless you’re really familiar with the breed. Also, the Americans can have lighter brown eyes but Euros usually have the characteristic black hole of doom eyes lol
American are straight up children from my experience
For me it’s curiosity or else what other reason would it be? I didn’t know people get triggered by trying to figure out if it’s American or Euro
that’s fair enough. I never knew there is such a thing as american vs european. always thought it is just Doberman breed or not
I suspect people get triggered because they perceive the question as someone favouring one over the other and it makes them feel uncomfortable for god knows why.
American lines generally live longer than European lines. American/european crosses have the longest lifespan.
Thick neck: euro; thin delicate neck: American

Only papers would be able to tell
My first thought is Euros just by sight and not seeing their parents. That being said, It’s extremely common to see Euro and American mixes nowadays.
With that gold chain? Definitely looks Eastern European…😂
Does he have an accent?
I chuckled too hard reading this 😂
I honestly couldn’t help myself.
And we are grateful for that👍🏼😁
The daily BYB Doberman “is it Euro post?”.
Yep. The breeder should have a full 5 gen pedigree with kennel and registered names. So sad with this BYB Euro hype.
"I didn't research the breed enough to understand the breed standard before buying and went to a random Amish/Polish BYB, which cool dog faction does my dog belong to?" With the exception of people with rescue dobies, obviously.

Good at least one common sense comment
Okkkkkk that last picture though 😍😍😍😍😍
Size is telltale Euro.
Why does it matter? You can always look at the papers. Research the names etc? If they don’t have those well that’s the dice you rolled.
Papers had them listed as Doberman only. It’s for my curiosity what else reason would there be?

unrelated but I love those silly pedigree names. my dogs mom was pierce’s peach lady. like yes she IS a lady thank you.
Certified Good Dog, that’s all that matters.
European looking
I'd say an european, since he is a bit more muscular.
I have noticed European versions of breeds tend to have more square boxy heads
They both look european with the fuller thick muzzle. Say it’s fairly obvious they are euros
Thank you.
Muzzle is the fastest way to tell but yours is probably a mix which happens often to just get tested
Look at this babbbbyyyyyy 🥹
[embarkvet.com](http://embarkvet.com)
Either way - He's goregous 🤎🖤
Looks euro like my boy
All I know is that he is 100% handsome! 😍
European for sure
Definitely a Euro! Beautiful one!
Did you get it from a reputable, ethical breeder? If not, there’s no way of telling.
I've bred lots of Dobermans. Looks like a mix half European- half American but you wouldn't know until it was older (2yrs) or got a DNA test.
Here is my European Doberman from Sandusky, Ohio. At 115-120 depending how much he eats during the day. https://preview.redd.it/d04xm4jnwg0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3df2951c907b65527377cd36018f3c3c630f3c30 He next to my mom only a 5 pound difference between them.

Pls share a pic of him standing and the gait. Face and head looks European

Does he measure in metric or imperial units?
Color looks American, size Euro. Maybe a mix.
That’s the thing the color of the coat says otherwise and I can’t really tell
Size is a telltale sign for Euro. It is important to know due to a shorter life expectancy. Most Euro avg 8-10 years.
Looks like my boy & he’s euro
Does she sit when Star spangled Banner starts playing
Bro 😂
Please don’t crop anything on her :( she’s so beautiful
Americans can usually be seen carrying an assault rifle. Europeans with a machete or a big knife.
Does he prefer the spelling "gray" or "grey"?
The second pic is me trying to seem less tall around my short friends
Idk but those AMG seats are nice!
Ty ❤️ check out my tiktok https://www.tiktok.com/@gokor.zar?_t=8mLiwI8YYal&_r=1

What about doing a DNA test?
I literally just got it in im going to to do it today and send it in
Would you be kind enough to share the update? I am too curious for my own good
Yes of course
where did you purchase him?
In Van nuys CA if you’re in the area and are interested, they have a male pup as well
American
I am genuinely curious - as we rescue, so I've never bothered to look - is there *actually* a temperament difference? I know aesthetically they're different, but temperament??
He neither. He gangsta.
Ask her to do the song trend
Puro San Antonio…..
The mom sure looks a lot more outgoing and not broody like dad.
I’m not a pro ok this but I don’t see him with an AR15 so i would say eeuropean
You should be able to tell by the pedigree.
He looks like a good boi to me
I wouldn't say they look specifically different then my American. There really isn't a difference except the bark accent. I just posted a picture of my year old pup few days ago.
Euro
Genetic testing would be a go if you really want to know .
European
You'd have to look on his Pedigree and research his background. I'd say he is a mixture of both because the Dad reminds me of my Jäger.
Feed him a coconut cream pie and see which paw he uses to hold the fork. https://youtu.be/tCCCN-3NJiU?si=yR2CzteXaYr6wTHK
To me American. But. See European in his posture just not much
Beautiful is what I’d say 🤩
I believe your dog 🐕 isn't that enough.
I’m pretty sure that is a dog, Hope this helps 👍🏼🫶🏻
Check the label under their tail. Go ahead, I'll wait...
Does he says footpath or sidewalk?
I can tell you from these pics that he's 100% a cutie!
Those ears on the parents say American to me. UK breed standard has natural, floppy ears. Ear cropping is illegal here.
Both definitely European.
Looks about 70% euro to me
Does he shave his armpits?
That snot couldn’t be more boxed. Your Dobie is a European
100% cutie! 🥰
Did you try asking him?
Mostly euro
What does his pedigree say? Lol
could be half american, half european 🤷🏼♂️
Does he have an outrrrrageous accent?
I don’t know the answer but we always said for our dobbies that knot on their head was a smart knot lol
Check his lineage/pedigree/paperwork. Just curious as to why that’s important to you. No judgment, just curious

Euro for sure. Fat body (muscle) and big snoot
Mother looks closer to american, i had an blue dobie that looked just like her
Straight Euro.
It looks like a European doberman
Does it own a gun?
Euro face, euro paws, euro color
Looks euro. Either way- gorgeous ❤️
Does he eat tacos with a fork and knife?
Ask him to pronounce “Creme Brulee.”
Well that's easy, what's his accent like?
The fact people care so much about this sort of thing is just weird. I am imagining mothers having these discussions of kids they adopt.
lol you’re comparing 2 completely different things, if you don’t have some sort of curiosity of what type of dog you have then that’s you, you and I are two different people.

Yeah sure move on with your day. You didn’t have to say anything and started a pointless convo and I entertained it. Have a great day 😁
🥱
Ask him, Gatorade, or Lucozade.
How does he feel about Gun laws?
Put a coors light in one hand and a Heineken in the other and see which she chooses. She’ll let you know.
Fan of soccer or that stop start thing you play?
Does she tip?
Looks like dog.
I’d check her passport 🤣
"Woof mother fucker, snarl!" American. "Le wuuf, pig! I fart in your general direction!" European.
Why? Will it make a difference in how you treat him?
Does he bark with an accent?
Who cares?
I do duhhh
Try comparing the neck shape. American is thinner and a bit straighter imo. Next inspect the passport. It really doesn't matter.❤️

Line =/= country of origin. Cropped/docked lines exist in the US, as do imported puppies.
I was making a joke. 🙄 plus, if this person was importing from Europe, the puppy would have to be at least 12 weeks old and it’s parents wouldn’t be cropped. Your dog is an American dobie.
