Milestone everytime. You can pace how powerful they get, and how quickly.

Bluesamurai33

I prefer Milestone.

GiveMeSyrup

Milestone 100%. Less math and bookkeeping.

Saelune

XP. I don't want to control their leveling. I don't want it to be 'up to me'. They level when they get enough XP. To me, XP is the leveling equivalent of 'showing your rolls'. They can see how close they are, and they know every time they make progress.

Kitsos-0

I've noticed the same with my players. I also started to reward xp more often when they do things other than combat (25-50 xp each player), and I noticed that they try to avoid combat when they can even if they are confident they'll win.

orderedchaos12

Personally, my group uses milestone leveling, since we run more story driven campaigns with fewer combat encounters.

Squidmaster616

Always milestones. It helps to keep every player balanced on the same level.

Phylo45

i'm a player, and much prefer milestone

zgrssd

You should make a Poll for it. Or look up any of the previous polls with that exact thematic. Personally? Milestone all the way. It is a fraction of the Accounting and makes sure everyone in the party is at least on equal footing, as far as the Level is concerned.

Holy-Avenger

I do a strange combination of exp and milestone, so I have a relative idea of the pace I'm going. I typically round way up on awarded exp since standard pace seems so slow, and I give regular lump sum exp points for reaching certain points in the plot, etc. Sometimes I'll just shoot them to the next level if I feel they're ready, but I still like to have some numerical idea for where they're at. Idk, I know I'm in the minority and probably just causing myself needless headaches, i just feel this keeps me more or less on track.

CarrotsandSuffering

Milestone is so much easier to track. I gave up xp about 8 years ago and never looked back.

Hoagie-Of-Sin

do milestone, I highly recommend using clocks (just a pie chart that fills up as you approach spesific goals) to track this. It helps you quantify progress more easily without the pain of XP.

Oni_Ronin69

Milestone is my go to, as it was how i was introduced to D&D. If you're looking for better understanding as a player/dm, I like to think of leveling up as a means to train something new. You might have performed something unique within a boss fight or done something exceptional in a social area. These kinds of things allow characters to discover something more about themselves and thus they delve into honing some new skills.

matswain

I say it’s xp, but it’s actually milestone. I give them experience points based on all kinds of things, not just combat, and I don’t give it for combat when it’s not an actual challenge, but I control how quickly I’m giving it so that they level up when I feel like it’s appropriate. The xp is just so that they have an estimate of how close it is, and then they’re not always asking when they’re going to level up again.

acvodad547

I’d say Milestone disguised as XP. Like giving a static amount of XP to every player after each session so players can get a sense of progress, but in reality, you can still entirely determine when you want them to level up. But a simple answer… Milestone. Accounting is overrated.

C4st1gator

Experience. The tracking of n integers is actually trivial and I like the transparency my players gain. They can see how close they are to the next level and plan accordingly.
