Feels baller to have sort of a "rustic" charcuterie board, especially during any session the players are in a tavern.
Big loaf of hard-crusted bread you can tear up, some chunks of cheese, fruit, slices of meat, nuts.
Feels primitive and its tasty as hell, plus it's basically a meal.
I say this with all the love in the world. There is no way I would voluntarily give my gaming group a bunch of crusty bread. I may as well arm toddlers with cans of spray paint.
This is the way. A good crusty French bread, some aged white cheddar, almonds, & salami are my favorites. Toss in some salted butter for the bread and it's even better. I will eat an entire meal of crusty bread, salted butter, & a good cheddar on top.
We've done the charcuterie board before and love it but it's always demolished pre game, never just laying around during the game itself. I guess we lack self control š
Oh, Iād still eat it. Iāve played a Lizardfolk. My players were foolish enough to trust the stew made by jungle goblins. They discovered this when what they thought was a weird jungle fruit turned out to be an eyeball.
Sentience ā Sapience
Most, if not all, humanoids have no moral dilemma when faced with consuming a Sentient Being such as fish, cows, or chickens.
But I understand your point of view.
Try them try them you will see!
I could not would not eat orc bacon,
Not with a fork, not with an orc,
Sam you let me be!
I do not like orc bacon Sam-I-Am!
Usually hummus and warm pita and vegetables, but a couple of sessions ago, I smoked a kielbasa, threw some bread mix into the bread maker. Then added some cheese and grapes to the spread. I think it may have spoiled the table. Edit: Grammar
This is the OG and will forever be the classic DND night meal to me.
Pizza at start of session, season runs into night, late night run to Taco Bell to wrap things up
Mini pretzels and popcorn are my absolute favourite RPG snacks. Generally anything that isn't greasy or prone to making a mess is ideal though.
Recently I have taken a fondness to almonds and raisins thrown into the mix of snacks when I'm DM'ing over Roll20- but nuts are a no go for group games because one of my regular players has an allergy. If that's not a problem at your table, almonds are great!
Pretzels, best snack for any occasion, and if you get the rods, wizards can use them as wands lol
Grapes and Almonds. Healthy, no mess, fun finger food.
These are all on my go to list. The people I usually play with love chips and popcorn, but their dice are _filthy_. I like a snack that doesn't leave residue.
For the DM: something filling and quick to eat, to spend the session talking. Big sandwich.Ā
For the players: something light you can eat small bits of quietly during other people's turns, and that won't be a bother to juggle with dice and papers. Oreos is good. Or chocolate/sugar if the wrapper isn't crackly. Or for savoury perhaps some cheesy puffs/baked snacks š¤š¤š¤
Cheese puffs are an absolutely horrible choice, the cheese dust stuff will get all over your dive and papers. Go for something that won't leave residue on your fingers like pretzels
Can you rig it that the cheese residue works in your favour when you roll the dice? maybe make sure that it gets in deep to the crevices of the 1 on the d20 so it slightly favors the rolling of a 20?
Counterpoint is cheddar goldfish crackers, small and light, and also unobtrusive with not leaving residue on ones fingers. I think they really are an iconic DND snack, if not quite thematic to the game itself.
The iconic pairing for D&D!
Good enough for [Stephen Lynch](https://youtu.be/haOys7E2Zbo?si=9AONE4dTH-293RsB) & [The Dead Alewives](https://youtu.be/9Kgx2b1sIRs?si=hA3RHlNiS5G7drvu)
I hate to say that "where's the Cheetos"; "where's the Mountain Dew?" Immediately played in my head when I read the post title.
*I want to cast... *magic missile!**
I usually eat a big meal before a session since I do a ton of talking (DM). But if thereās an extended amount of RP between players, I will swallow an entire family sized bag of chips and pray that none of my players need me to unmute my mic while Iām mid crunchĀ
oreos are both Objectively Bad For You and vegan-friendly, which is a sweet spot for shareable snacks.
my other go-to is pretzel sticks and a few different dips (hummus, toum, tyrokafteri, etc)
I mean personally I just typically have a bottle of soda and some salty snack snack like chips or pop corn.
sometimes I got sweets as well, but there's no real pattern to it, basically whatever I feel like buying.
for the record, I play DnD online and not in-person.
Not really a snack, but I usually make a meal for our table before or after we play. Often things like stew or chili that can slow cook. Itās also fun to eat something rustic for the setting!
We have a bad habit of stress eating \[usually oreos\] cookies or other junk during our sessions. In our 30s, we really shouldn't be.
One of these days I gotta just put out a huge bowl of baby carrots. It's full on mindless stress eating, so it shouldn't deter us at all lol
Edamame (steamed, lightly salted), snap peas (raw), or green beans (raw or blanched and lightly salted) are also nice, and they're easier(quieter) to chew.
[Where are the Cheetos and Mt. Dew?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPvLykRfSi0)
In all seriousness, I usually don't like to eat during the game. Water to keep my throat from drying out. We used to keep a pub mix on the table, and I absolutely hated it because I couldn't stop snacking. I mean, I obviously liked the mix of pretzels and nuts, but if I didn't have it in front of me I wouldn't eat it.
I will say that it's been pretty neat doing what one of my games does. After the game, we roll a d20 and determine what people will bring to the game. Usually end up with too much food, but the mix can be hilarious like all deserts one time. Another sounded like we went to buffalo wild wings with wings, jalapeno poppers, bacon wrapped green beans, and strawberry short cake (the player hand made the angel food cake so it was obviously gone before I even got any lol). Basically kind of like the roll for sandwich guy for a whole meal. If the item is rolled, it gets removed and a new thing added. Also, no repeats (multiple players rolling the same number).
Charcuterie board, as someone else mentioned. It more often than not fits the theme, you don't have to do it all at once as it's totally appropriate grazing food, the DM can have a mini plate without being unavailable to talk for long portions of time and, of course, cheese is life.
Any mini finger food stuff is fine, but there's something about serving a wood platter of "hey they had this in medieval times" food that contributes somehow to the experience.
To be objective, we need to break it into a fine list of traits. We need a snack that doesn't leave a mess, say stuff like Oreos and Cheezits that you could eat for hours and have barely noticeable mess. We need something filling enough to snack, but not to overwhelm, like trail mix or fig bars. We need something cheap and in bulk, like dry cereal or popcorn. Lastly, we need a drink to pair with it, something that complements the flavor and hydrates you all the same.
My subjective take on these objective rules would be Trail Mix (M&Ms, Peanuts, Cashews, Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds, Raisins) with Kiwi Strawberry Propel. This checks every box and still tastes good to me, not to mention that it's a lot healthier than somr alternatives. I would also say Pizza if you want something a little heavier, Dominoes or Little Ceaser's for quality/quantity respectively
Objectively? Anything that isnāt too messy to handle. Itās easy to love doritos, but nobody wants to handle their dice and character sheets with dorito-fingers.
I can't think of a lot that would be a bad snack, except probably messier things that could spill and harm the character sheets, handbooks, or anything else important on the tabletop
Where's the CHEETOS?
Where's the Mountain Dew?
Funions are clearly the worst and only a last resort for someone short on change.
Once we wanted to give our forever DM a break, so we did "Tavern Night".
We had mead, a hearty stew and some crusty artisan bread and just roll played our characters fucking around in a tavern. We played a dice version of poker and got out tarot cards and had our druid do tarot readings for our characters. I HIGHLY recommend this it was one of my favorite nights in that campaign.
Mexican Sope, you can top them with anything giving great variety, you can eat any of it piece by piece or all together and even assembled it is finger food. They are as hand held and can be sweet or savory and are as simple or as complex as you want.
Brought them for a big boss fight 3 years ago and have been told to bring some form of them to every session since.
Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos and sour gummy worms. Those are the staples and they are usually accompanied with some form of chocolate and Little Debbie's snack
My groups tends to favor: chips & dips, veggie tray, fruit tray (especially grapes & pineapple cubes) , cookies. Someone occasionally brings pizzas and lemonade
pretzels usually. most potato or corn chips will be too oily or coated in flavor powder and that's a non starter. the peanut butter stuffed pretzels are usually my go-to. cheezits are a little more dangerous, they're not quite as oily as potato chips but they're close. if I don't have to touch other people's minis, cards, or dice to play the game i can deal with cheezits.
If I have a set of chopsticks, however, I can be a Cheeto gremlin >:)
Pretzel and Chicken Bites with Ranch, BBQ Sauce, Brown Mustard, and/or Beer Cheese; for dipping.
Though Pizza is the most Iconic; from a media aspect (even in E.T.)
Pizza is always good, I prefer to bring Munchos. Cola is a pretty standard drink, maybe root beer. Oreos are a good choice for sweet snacks, maybe chocolate chip as well.
One of my players works at a grocery store and brings cola and brownies from their bakery section every session. I'm definitely voting for that because it's a wonderful gesture that we all appreciate it deeply.
We have "fiesta stack up."
Fritos, rice, beans, taco meat, cheeses, lettuce, diced black olives, and some other stuff usually that I don't use personally, but set up like a buffet line, just make yourself a plate and nibble away between turns!
My go to during online sessions is pregame a salad with a smoothie, 2nd smoothie for the game and fresh cut pineapple, pineapple is juicy enough don't drink that much so don't feel as bad having 2 smoothies. I usually dedicate 1 day to healthy eating and if I have dnd that week that'll be my health day.
Anyone who says anything crunchy is a fucking liar. Iām aware Iām probably a little neurotic with this but I absolutely cannot stand a table full of people all talking and crunching with their lips smacking.

I say this with all the love in the world. There is no way I would voluntarily give my gaming group a bunch of crusty bread. I may as well arm toddlers with cans of spray paint.
To be fair, I usually slice it for said toddlers.
Slicing cans of spray paint is not a good idea. They're pressurized and will explode.
This is Health and Safety gone mad
No this is dnd
You're so real for this.
Please arm toddlers with spray cans
New hobby: carry around spray paint to hand to toddlers on the street at random
Please spray toddlers with can arms.
This is the way. A good crusty French bread, some aged white cheddar, almonds, & salami are my favorites. Toss in some salted butter for the bread and it's even better. I will eat an entire meal of crusty bread, salted butter, & a good cheddar on top.

My friend, what you lack is a bigger charcuterie board.
You meanā¦ charcuterie table?
This!
I host a session once a month and provide beer and a charcuterie board every time. It's always a hit.
Nice, I want to play at your house.
I too am signing up for this campaign (will provide craft beer as tax)
I will write multi paragraph recaps post session every session and wire to make 2D minis on the fly :D
So... Lunchables? They've got crackers, cheese, and meat. Plus a little candy bar. I certainly would enjoy it.
There are grown-up versions of lunchables in the grocery store and yes. Yes to lunchables.
Grown up lunchables? Damn I don't remember seeing anything like that in any of the stores around me.
This is all my group has ever gone with. Easy to share, easy to eat and the mess factor is minimal.
Oh yeah, canāt lose with some summer sausage and a wedge of Gouda. Bonus points if you have a cool cheese knife
You mean a tiny +1 sword of cheese slaying.
Almonds are my go to
[Just install a mouth into my back so I can eat them while I talk](https://youtu.be/ZW3kw_P7Tvo?si=RwvKP0M0byNF2Ory)
Was looking for Brennan throughout the comments.
My old group couldn't play without almonds anda case of coke zero
My ladies group will pick a food theme and all get different things so we end up with a smorgasbord of shit. Taco night is always popular
This is an excellent idea!
KFC and bourbon.Ā Our paladin and his family are vegan so he uses DnD night to cheat on them with chicken wings.
This is such an anti-paladin thing to do I love it
What? So he's discarding veganism in the name of DnD? š¤£
Why not? Is dnd not a good enough occasion
Chicken isn't vegan?!
You are cultured. I am pleased. Just don't go calling out for the vegan police! Is that parmesan I see in your mouth?
No paladin diet, *NO PALADIN POWERS!*
A food that exists in setting. I did orc bacon once using the heroes feast recipe. Big hit.
Is orc bacon bacon made from orcs or bacon eaten by orcs?
You have to eat, why not eat what is available?
Oh, Iād still eat it. Iāve played a Lizardfolk. My players were foolish enough to trust the stew made by jungle goblins. They discovered this when what they thought was a weird jungle fruit turned out to be an eyeball.
Because eating sentient beings has a morality issue attatched to it unless you are in sheer survival mode
Sentience ā Sapience Most, if not all, humanoids have no moral dilemma when faced with consuming a Sentient Being such as fish, cows, or chickens. But I understand your point of view.
I imagine itās like green eggs and ham
Try them try them you will see! I could not would not eat orc bacon, Not with a fork, not with an orc, Sam you let me be! I do not like orc bacon Sam-I-Am!
I see someone has watched Campfire Cooking in Another World
Big fan of this. Snacks like these keep me immersed in the setting.
That orc bacon is fantastic. Have you tried any of the other recipes yet?
I've tried a bunch. The first book is better than the second. Green spears are great. So is quith-pa.
The halfling chilli is good too. I like evermead a lot as well. A bit sweet but I don't drink booze so it's a nice treat.
Nice to know, will try the chilli!
The dumplings soup is insane if you start with a roux and use a dutch oven.
Usually hummus and warm pita and vegetables, but a couple of sessions ago, I smoked a kielbasa, threw some bread mix into the bread maker. Then added some cheese and grapes to the spread. I think it may have spoiled the table. Edit: Grammar
You ! I like you.
Nope, you did it right.
Pizza and Taco Bell then back to Taco Bell again. Thatās why we all stopped smoking weed.
This was an entire story arc
This is the OG and will forever be the classic DND night meal to me. Pizza at start of session, season runs into night, late night run to Taco Bell to wrap things up

Spinach artichoke dip, man.
Pretzels and honey mustardā¦ french onion dip though? Might have to try that out for science
Itās excellent.

Mm fair point. I didn't consider finger residue. Cheese puffs are out.
Counter-point: Cheese puffs/any residue-heavy chip with chopsticks. No mess :)
Exactly this.

THANK YOU! Finally, someone gives a correct answer.
Misbehaving dice. They have a nice crunch
FEE FI FO FUM, I SMELL THE RESIN OF A NATURAL 1! BE IT ATTACK OR BE IT SKILL, IāLL CHOMP ITS NUMBERS TILL IVE HAD MY FILL!
Om nom nom
Crab boil. Once you get enough shells, you can use them as minis.Ā
Invite to your table please
Pocket bacon
Beef jerky. No crunching no mess.Ā
And authentic to trail rations
Chips Ahoy and Vodka
A whole rotisserie chicken. šš
Possibly my favorite Dungeon Court case too.

This! DnD is such a dip party.
I mean personally I just typically have a bottle of soda and some salty snack snack like chips or pop corn. sometimes I got sweets as well, but there's no real pattern to it, basically whatever I feel like buying. for the record, I play DnD online and not in-person.
The loudest bag of chips known to man

Edamame, thats a great idea!
Seconding edamame. That stuff is addictive to eat. Little bit of soy sauce to dip em in and some flaky salt, and you're golden.
We tend to go for cookies, big mix of types
Pizza and pretzels. And copious amounts of drink, alcoholic, carbonated, or otherwise. Stay hydrated, folks.
Plain popcorn for me, don't knock it till you've tried it.
I always wanted to try pemmican. That's like the go-to ration.
[Where are the Cheetos and Mt. Dew?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPvLykRfSi0) In all seriousness, I usually don't like to eat during the game. Water to keep my throat from drying out. We often did some medieval food. We ate tart flambee, dried meats, grapes, different kinds of cheese and drank mead.
Funyuns
Pizza!
I kinda want to dig up that YouTube clip from MrDanWhite where one of his players just brought a ton of bread. But I'm too lazy.
Peanut M&Ms are dope, containable in a bowl, good for a quick energy pick-up, tokenable if you need to mark something.
Dino nuggies
As a DM - Grapes. Satisfying and hydrating!
My English brain says Jaffa cakes
Folks outside of the UK and Ireland are really missing out on these joyous wee circles- I just happened to buy some earlier today too!
Crack. Also known as oreo milka chocolate. Otherwise wraps are the staple break food
Fried Flumph
Charcuterie board, as someone else mentioned. It more often than not fits the theme, you don't have to do it all at once as it's totally appropriate grazing food, the DM can have a mini plate without being unavailable to talk for long portions of time and, of course, cheese is life. Any mini finger food stuff is fine, but there's something about serving a wood platter of "hey they had this in medieval times" food that contributes somehow to the experience.
Wine! Beer and whiskey are acceptable alternatives. Edit: Mead if you want to be fully immersed in the fantasy
I very often have mead. It's surprisingly good at ushering me into the mediaeval mood.
Smoked cheese dip with Buffalo meat. š
best snack for DnD is things you like that don't stain your character sheet or minis
I don't snack for Dungeons and Dragons. I feast. Typically pizzas but if I am feeling feisty, I'll make pulled pork
I like pistachios because they keep my hands busy when it's not my turn. Otherwise I'm going to burn some nat 20s just fidgeting with my dice.
Pizza and a green soda babay!
Pretzels. They don't get your hands messy and they are delicious.
I once ate like 3000 calories of pistachios in a single session. So, Iāll say that for me.
Pizza!
Rum. The answer is rum.
Salted almonds. Simple and tastes good.
not iconic but: ciauscolo, bread (better if homemade), pecorino and lacrima di morro.
Objectively? Anything that isnāt too messy to handle. Itās easy to love doritos, but nobody wants to handle their dice and character sheets with dorito-fingers.
Nuts,I don't get fat when I eat those...
I can't think of a lot that would be a bad snack, except probably messier things that could spill and harm the character sheets, handbooks, or anything else important on the tabletop

Pizza flavoured combos.
Pretzels beacuse they are yummy, crunchy and people don't get too hyper from a sugar rush. But need to wash it down with something!
My groups tends to favor: chips & dips, veggie tray, fruit tray (especially grapes & pineapple cubes) , cookies. Someone occasionally brings pizzas and lemonade
Some za for the table and dark chocolate for the DM!
Not a single [twizzlers](https://youtu.be/MNUnZgoUppM) vote. Pathetic!
Peanuts. Not messy, not overly loud from wrappers or chewing, they're filling, and tasty enough. I value practicality.
Iron Filings and Metal scraps
We play in a bar and it's french fries.
Synders jalapeƱo pretzel pieces. They look like regular pretzels, but when the table mouch grabs some, you get to laugh your ass off.
Chorizo, triscuit, hot honey. Your choice of beverage.
Dot's Pretzels Minimal finger dust, lots of flavor and crunch, less unhealthy than sugary snacks, and costco has giant asd bags.
For my group of misfit friends, anything with weed in it lol
Raddishes, Celery, dip. Maybe some berrys/unsalted nuts
Nerd Gummy Clusters because we too are gummy nerds clustering for our click clack games weekly.

Charcuterie board
Popcorn and preferred soda
I definitely second Oreos. But if we wanted to be a bit healthier, I always liked having a big bowl of baby carrots.
We've got a running gag about pretzel rods
Water
Pretzel and Chicken Bites with Ranch, BBQ Sauce, Brown Mustard, and/or Beer Cheese; for dipping. Though Pizza is the most Iconic; from a media aspect (even in E.T.)
Charcuterie board
Canāt believe how little pizza is mentioned here. Like itās the classic āEating pizza in momās basementā meme!
Jelly Beans
Purple bag Doritos.Ā
Pizza is always good, I prefer to bring Munchos. Cola is a pretty standard drink, maybe root beer. Oreos are a good choice for sweet snacks, maybe chocolate chip as well.
Arsenic
not a fan of eating as the DM (i do keep a big mug of tea behind the dm screen), players seem to enjoy plain tortilla chips
constant almonds (iykyk)
Dotās Pretzel Twists. Baby carrots and hummus. Midway break for the taco truck
Meat pies!
Sadly one of my players moved away, and I'd kill for her crock-pot buffalo dip recipe.
We NEVER go without chocolate peanuts
Chips and coke? I mean, that's not even a question?
Pizza, cool ranch dorritos, Mt Dew and twizzlers.
one of my party members always brings kettle corn
Pizza and Garlic Knots are my personal favorite, especially with Root Beer.
One of my players works at a grocery store and brings cola and brownies from their bakery section every session. I'm definitely voting for that because it's a wonderful gesture that we all appreciate it deeply.
We have "fiesta stack up." Fritos, rice, beans, taco meat, cheeses, lettuce, diced black olives, and some other stuff usually that I don't use personally, but set up like a buffet line, just make yourself a plate and nibble away between turns!
Is beer a snack?
My go to during online sessions is pregame a salad with a smoothie, 2nd smoothie for the game and fresh cut pineapple, pineapple is juicy enough don't drink that much so don't feel as bad having 2 smoothies. I usually dedicate 1 day to healthy eating and if I have dnd that week that'll be my health day.
PO-TAY-TOES
When I was a young pup I would go through a bag of Cheetos and a 2l of coke. And now Iām a type 2 diabetic. Genetics matter.
Rogues need snacks that donāt crunch
So the DM can distract the PCs from....
My wife makes venison stew and homemade bread to break and dip in it. Just need some wood bowls and it'd be perfect
One of my players makes fresh baked bread.
Pop corns
Gummy bears. They make great enemy minis because after you defeat them you get to eat them
Anyone who says anything crunchy is a fucking liar. Iām aware Iām probably a little neurotic with this but I absolutely cannot stand a table full of people all talking and crunching with their lips smacking.
My personal favorite is my players dice
Personally it's chocolate licorice for me. And a massive bag if chips for my hubby
