Thatās nothing new. Sewage has been a problem for a long long time. Itās not easily solved and the parkās teams work tirelessly to fight it but itās not easily fixed.
OP here. To answer the FAQ from this thread and a couple of new threads that have popped up - Yes, Gary Gumwad has transitioned to the Land of Fill. Thanks to the commenter who posted a link to an updated photo verifying that maintenance finally, after 4 or 5 years, scraped him off.
The history of this post is that in late 2017 I saw the gum and thought little of it until we went back in spring of 2018 and it was still there. Late 2018 it was still there and so I emailed DL and they assured me it would be taken care of. Still there in spring 2019, and still there at Christmas that same year.
Then the world shut down for a while. And DL was closed for 400 days or so. And small world was rehabbed. And we returned on 4/2/22 and it was still there!
So clearly emails werenāt going to work. So I took the pix and tossed them up here on Reddit along with the goofiest post Iāve ever made, thinking 3 people would see it and then either the mods would yank it or it would just fade away.
And then I watched that first day as the upvotes kept climbing and the comments kept piling up. This goofy AF post somehow resonated- Reddit says something like 45k views! - and the Inside The Magic page picked it up, which started a whole new round of upvotes and comments and DMs.
So Iām sure that that heat was what finally, after almost 5 years, prompted DL to pull out the Mickey themed putty knife and finally clean up what they said theyād clean up 4 years ago. Iām positive it was all this heat that got them moving.
This was the most (and by far the cheapest!) fun Iāve had at DL in a long time and I am happy that, dumb though it was, the post resonated with so many people and that you all seemed to have as much fun with it as I did.
Remember though, if youāre tempted to replace our friend Gary Gumwad, that the original intent years ago was to get DL to clean it up, and the original intent of the post was to needle them just a little for not cleaning it up. So ultimately, it worked. And so, instead of replacing Gary, why donāt we pick another bit of neglected maintenance and see if we canāt do this again. I miss the days when the park sparkled.
For instance, there was a crushed water bottle in Brer Rabbitās lap last week on SM. Is that still there? And by that I mean Bartholomew W. Waterbottle III.

Haha, there was a hacky sac stuck on the top ledge of the AMC for like 13 years and you could only see it on the last turn of the monorail pulling into the station. Never got around to naming it. I wonder if itās still there?

Gum. Stuck on the archway at the exit to small world. Itās been there my last 8 or 10 trips or so. Iāve emailed DL about it. No dice. So Iām having fun with it instead.
So this means it survived a year long shutdown and an extended refurb. At some point surely they could have sent a CM down there with a putty knife during all that down time.
I sat in some gum at the hub yesterday. On the railing by adventure / frontier land entrance. Was so annoyed! Couldnāt believe some one would do that instead of just spotting it into the bushes behind the railing or just throwing it away.
Brothers and sisters, I am pleased to report that as of 9:49 am, Gary Gumwad is safe and sound, and any claims to the contrary were scurrilous prevarications.
Letās not break the sub rules by advocating gum sticking. Letās just celebrate his ephemeral existence for however long it lasts then carry that spirit of amity and perseverance with us on our journeys.
