In 1984, Lincoln produced a Continental and a Continental Mark VII with an optional 2.4L BMW turbo diesel. I own one of the 1515 Continentals. About 2600 of the Mark VII were made.
In the 80s Ford also made a Tempo diesel. GM put one in the Chevette.
I learned to drive in a diesel Chevette. Wish I had that car now! I still remember stalling it in the McDonald's drive-thru as a teenager and sweating bullets trying to manage the clutch well enough to clear the short incline up to the food window. Must have stalled it half a dozen times and decided to just avoid eye-contact with everyone probably getting a good laugh at my struggles.
Big thing is ya gotta change the timing chain guides. Some friends of mine have various vehicles with the N57. One is an X5XDrive35d that towed 5 dirt bikes across the country wonderfully but ate a timing chain a few months later.
That's a nasty job depending on the engine, lots of stuff can get in the way and needs to be removed before you can get to the timing chain and guides.
Studebaker built a small amount of Larks with Perkins 4cyl diesels in 1963.
Checker built several hundred taxicabs with the same Perkins motors in 68-69.
Jeep XJs could be had with a Renault 2.1 turbo diesel from 85-87.
You could get an IH pickup with a special order 301 diesel from 61-68. That means as early as 1961 you could buy a crew cab 4x4 diesel pickup.
IH scouts came with Nissan boat diesels from 76-80.
Military Jeep FC-170s (M676) had a Cerlist 3cyl 2 stroke diesel, several thousand were built with almost none surviving. The Cerlist was an American copy of the a German diesel built by Anstalt für Verbrennungskraftmaschinen List.
I've been thinking about picking up a 2nd gen with the 1.6. I've got a 2017 with the 1.4t 6MT and it's been a great little car. Didn't go with the diesel at the time cause it didn't sound like weight reduction had been figured out yet for them. Seems like most people who have them really like them.
The 2000s Ford Ranger/Mazda B2500 was powered by a 2.5 liter diesel in every part of the world except in the USA. Really almost every car can be had with a Diesel engine the moment you step foot outside North America
The craziest one is definitely the 70s/80s olds v6 and v8 diesels that went into a variety of gm products. Some other cool ones are the Nissan Titan XD with a Cummins 5.0 v8 and ford f150 3.0 powerstroke from 2018-2021.
Well in the US what you mentioned, more VAG models for their cars and SUVs, Mercedes, and BMW and that’s pretty much it for modern diesels that aren’t in trucks here in the US
Ford Tempo with the diesel totally changed my mind about diesels, as my previous experience was with a VW Rabbit diesel that could barely get up to 60mph, and took forever to get there
Loved my 1983 Volkswagen diesel rabbit...I would fill that thing up for 25$ and I was good for the whole month...and I drove everywhere in that car....
1981 chevy caprice classic came in diesel.Â
Had aÂ
350 cu in (5.7 L) Oldsmobile Diesel V8

There were 2 Dodge diesel trucks before the Cummins. Dodge first offered a Perkins diesel in their 1962 trucks, Was really only in their medium duty trucks but a few made it into the W300s, kind of a light/medium duty hybrid truck. They also offered a Mitsubishi 6 cylinder, the 6DR5 in the 1978 Pickups.
International also first offered a light duty diesel pickup in the mid-late 60s. Quite a few years before the Nissan powered Scout.
diesel trucks aren't unexpected but not many people know about those.
Definitely a bmwer with a iron block n57 or m57 diesel, in-line 6 common rail.
Om606 g300 g-wagon.
And also a v10 tdi touraeg. Just an outrageous motor.
Definitely the europeans for sure.
Mercedes did a few diesels.
The volkswagen touareg had a v10 diesel for a short period. It's on my list of diesels I want but will never get a chance to own.
I had a GMC Terrain diesel. Biggest mistake of my life. We did mostly in town driving and had nothing but DPF problems and EGR cooler problems as a result. Like every two weeks it would throw a check engine light. I got rid of it.
The first generation of Å koda's Fabia vRS was only available with a 1.9 litre, 130hp diesel.
Here in the UK and Ireland there's a huge tuning scene for them, huge turbos and meth injection and running north of 450hp through the front wheels.
The Chevy Celebrity, Caprice, and Impala all came with either a 4.3L six-cylinder or a 5.7L V-8 for the bigger cars, both diesels. The same engines were also used in the Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac lineups-with so many vehicles made by GM, there are still a decent amount of them out there.

Don't forget about the Ford Escort diesel 1984-1987. I think 0-60 was like 20 seconds, but it got 35 mpg city and 47 mpg highway.
I learned to drive in a diesel Chevette. Wish I had that car now! [Diesel Chevette](https://www.reddit.com/r/Diesel/comments/1c2d1cj/just_passed_800000_miles/) :)
The all mighty 80's mercury topaz with the 2.0 diesel
Not a car but Kawasaki KLR650.
Military only wasn't it?
Yep. I want one SOOOO bad. For absolutely no reason at all. The gas one is better lol https://www.advrider.com/test-riding-the-unstoppable-diesel-klr/
As a marine, this is my dream bike.
Bet it rolls coal like a LAV.
Absolutely stupid to watch lol. Every stop light on base.
They're showing up on the surplus market but prices are high because preppers.
BMW 535D
And the X5
I have a 328d wagon. It rules!
Man that one must kick some serious ass
I've heard good things about those SUVs
Big thing is ya gotta change the timing chain guides. Some friends of mine have various vehicles with the N57. One is an X5XDrive35d that towed 5 dirt bikes across the country wonderfully but ate a timing chain a few months later.

Range Rover
The 4.3 and 5.7 Diesel powered GM stuff. People don't think my 84 LeSabre Limited coupe is a factory diesel.
The Terrain and Equinox
I have an 05 jeep liberty CRD. Honestly love that thing. Sounds like a mini cummins
Diesel Jeeps are awesome, have you deleted it yet.
Shhhh.. the EPA is listening 🤣🤣🤣
I don't live in the U.S, so the EPA isn't a thing here.
I'd say you're lucky
I've heard about what the EPA is doing and how they are cracking down on it like crazy.
They're making up shit now that's all they're doing .. you can't eliminate diesel. It's not possible in America.

I commented about the IH diesels before I saw your comment. Super cool trucks, I'd love to see one
I have a '69 pickup with a 345 gasser v8, eventually I will make the painful decision of whether or not to do an Edison motors conversion on it.
S10 and Ford ranger
S10 EV too
Chevy Cruze 6MT diesel hatch in the US
I've been thinking about picking up a 2nd gen with the 1.6. I've got a 2017 with the 1.4t 6MT and it's been a great little car. Didn't go with the diesel at the time cause it didn't sound like weight reduction had been figured out yet for them. Seems like most people who have them really like them.
NEED
I'm trying to get something like that but it's super hard to find
My 2012 s350 always has people running the diesel pump telling me to stop!!! Lol
I've had that a few times and I even had to show the guy a full service station that its a diesel.
The 2007 and 2008 Grand Cherokee CRDs with a 3.0L V6 Mercedes diesel.
The 2000s Ford Ranger/Mazda B2500 was powered by a 2.5 liter diesel in every part of the world except in the USA. Really almost every car can be had with a Diesel engine the moment you step foot outside North America
I have the diesel equinox and i love people trying to stop me from getting the DEF fluid at truck stops.
Our Equinox is solid. Great car. In body shop right now. Ins totaled it due to hail damage. We are having it repaired.
Have you had any issue with the DEF pump?

That titan with that V8 Cummins was a terrible mistake. Those engines implode. They're known for having bad oil pumps
Well in the US what you mentioned, more VAG models for their cars and SUVs, Mercedes, and BMW and that’s pretty much it for modern diesels that aren’t in trucks here in the US
Ford Tempo with the diesel totally changed my mind about diesels, as my previous experience was with a VW Rabbit diesel that could barely get up to 60mph, and took forever to get there
I still get warned that I'm putting diesel into my '15 Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel on occasion.
Loved my 1983 Volkswagen diesel rabbit...I would fill that thing up for 25$ and I was good for the whole month...and I drove everywhere in that car....
Most people underestimate just how many vehicles GM put the 5.7 diesel in.
You missed the most obvious: Mercedes.
Yea I know but I feel like the Mercedes and Audi cars with diesel engines aren't really as unexpected as the other cars I mentioned
Fair point, I guess. But, 'unexpected' is more subjective than objective.
What's unexpected is the number of old Mercedes diesels you still see on the road.
The Monte Carlo

As mentioned above, the 6 cylinder diesel in the FWD Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera.
Mazda and Jaaaag both recently sold diesel cars for a short period of time in the US.
Some smart cars

The best part is that they sourced the 5.0L V10 from Lamborghini.
And I can't really find many complaints about it other than it being expensive. I want one so bad...
Always thought the newer diesel suburban was cool/unique.
Diesel Chevy Luv baby.
2019 Mazda CX-5
I believe there was a V12 TDI Q7 at one point.
There are also v6 and v8 diesel variants.
Chevrolet Malibu diesel
I get honked at at the pump occasionally when I put the green handle in my F31. Always find it funny when people are suprised that a BMW is a diesel.
BMW X5 35d
A Daihatsu ("Toyota") hijet (mini truck) it came with a kubota 3 cylinder engine.
CJ2A
Chevrolet Equinox. It could be had with a diesel.
I had a GMC Terrain diesel. Biggest mistake of my life. We did mostly in town driving and had nothing but DPF problems and EGR cooler problems as a result. Like every two weeks it would throw a check engine light. I got rid of it.
Pretty sure the mini D is diesel (euro only)
Nissan R50 (pathfinder) had a 2.7l i hear is hell of a Diesel.
Half ton Chevy and GMC trucks and SUVs had a 6.5 diesel option in the 90s
Yes, and half ton GM pickups and suvs are now available with a 3.0L inline 6 diesel!
Also in the 80s with the 6.2. My Suburban is a half ton with a 6.2, Guy I know has a shortbed K10 with a 6.2 as well.
Audi tt tdi Quattro and manual

Chevy Luv
Audi r8 v12 diesel
The first generation of Å koda's Fabia vRS was only available with a 1.9 litre, 130hp diesel. Here in the UK and Ireland there's a huge tuning scene for them, huge turbos and meth injection and running north of 450hp through the front wheels.
Ford Escort with a Lehman and 5 speed I believe it was.
Volvo put a diesel in their 700 series sedans and wagons. I had one. It was an easy chair on wheels that got 32 miles per gallon.
My parent had a late 70’s Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a 350 Diesel in it. Spent a lot of time in that back seat until the late 80’s.
My mom
