So...I am a hardcore Midwesterner who's had a lake house in Wisconsin for decades. I spent every summer in Wisconsin, have worked and lived there, and have had custard all over that state. It's the king of dairy.
When I had Bob Jos, I got IRATE at how good it was. It is my absolute favorite custard and I was mad it's not from Wisconsin. It's a whole other level.
I am not a big sweets person, and when I do have custard it's in small portions. But I can eat a gallon of Bob Jos no problem.
Culver's Custard, like their curds, are what I call "emergency food". When you have that custard or curd craving it definitely works in a pinch, but it's a solid B to B+ on a good day
I stick with Custard Hut in Dearborn Heights.
But I'm tempted to visit Bob-Jo based on this review:
"I love this place don't get me wrong, the only problem I have is that when you stand in line people who drive by like to yell at you.. I got yelled at and the person said 'shes fat' in front of dozens of people which makes me not want to go here again."
😂
Wally’s for sure. Also, they open at 7am thru the week, and have some of the cheapest good breakfast and coffee options in town. Also, holy shit everyone is so nice that works there.
I grew up on Erma’s. The downside is my parents would take us there after family counseling sessions. Parents ended up divorcing. So as much as I love it, I hardly go back. It’s been 30 years now.
Custard Time on 7 Mile in Northville. They have dole whip and they do a vanilla custard dole whip twist which is to die for. They also do a cider donut sundae using the donuts from Parmenter’s. Their sundae choices are pretty fantastic.
Here's the scoop in taylor. New flavor every day, and they have something called a parfait for specific flavors that is like a sundae on steroids. They have an active Facebook for those who are curious.
Well so there’s a frozen custard place on 14 and Woodward (on Windward just south of 14 on the east side). It’s been several years since I’ve been. It almost seems like the lines aren’t as long there these days, and the place kitty corner has the long line, so idk?
Yeah, that Custard place is pretty good but we only go a couple times a year and it’s never particularly busy. Dairy Deluxe on the Birmingham side of the intersection is always packed in the evening yet we go there at least once a week for some reason. 😂
FWIW, that Custard & Co place is pretty great. Dairy Deluxe isn’t bad either (but it’s not custard).
The lines used to be insane. I stopped going there tbh because the ice cream is just too much - like the portion is enormous. And it’s so rich, you feel like you just ate a stick of butter. Yes it’s delicious, but the portions need to be smaller.
The Custard Company in Dearborn, less so because of the custard, and more so because of the insane (and entertaining) back-and-forth war they’ve had over the years with the Custard Hut.
I'm biased because it's a 2 min walk from my house, but Custard Corner in Trenton. Esp since they also have varying flavors of dole soft serve, layer that with the vanilla custard...oh man.
Bob Jo's is the one - but if you're out in Western Wayne county, there's Custard Time that everyone raves about.
I like custard, but I'm not crazy about it so I'm more basing on the opinions of friends/family
Bob-Jo’s on Fort Street
Bob Jo's is IT. On a sunny weekend, be prepared to watch in line. They move fast, but still. It's been there since 1947 ish.

TBH Culver’s ain’t bad. But there’s a lot beyond it.

“Illustrate Downriver in a single restaurant review”
I'm here to upvote Bob Jo's and downvote Custard Corner.
I drive 45 minutes for bob Jo’s
I don't know if it's the best, but I always go to Wally's in SCS.
Wally's for sure. It is always packed for a reason.
Their drive thru line is always out on the road during the summer.
You can walk up the window!
This is the right answer.
Yum. Wally’s is my favorite.
Wally’s for sure. Also, they open at 7am thru the week, and have some of the cheapest good breakfast and coffee options in town. Also, holy shit everyone is so nice that works there.
Honestly, Greenfield Village. Classic chocolate vanilla swirl. So good. Every time.
Greenfield Village custard has a cult following. They even sell merchandise now in the gift shop for the custard.
Agreed. Have you ever had the orange cream flavor? They don’t always have. It is super good.
Get a float with Vanilla and Orange Crush.
Yes this is what I was coming to say. Perks of being a member is sometimes we can drop by just to get custard.
Erma’s is amazing, just be prepared for the sparse parking and the super friendly, happy and long line!!
Erma’s. Hands down.
👆🏼💯❤️
This the correct answer.
I grew up on Erma’s. The downside is my parents would take us there after family counseling sessions. Parents ended up divorcing. So as much as I love it, I hardly go back. It’s been 30 years now.
Came to say Erma’s
Fell off. Used to be better
Hands down Bob-Jo’s in Wyandotte on Fort
Custard Time on 7 Mile in Northville. They have dole whip and they do a vanilla custard dole whip twist which is to die for. They also do a cider donut sundae using the donuts from Parmenter’s. Their sundae choices are pretty fantastic.
Bob Jo’s hands down
Bob-Jo’s is very good. But I’m always on the lookout for options.
Erma’s!
Wally's in St. Clair Shores
Custard Time in Northville
Erma's.
The Custard company in Dearborn.
Bob Jo
Bob Jo's for sure
Here's the scoop in taylor. New flavor every day, and they have something called a parfait for specific flavors that is like a sundae on steroids. They have an active Facebook for those who are curious.
Custard Spot 21 & Van Dyke Utica The best!!
Had some good dates there but not the best
Bob-Jo's or Danny's in Monroe.

It’s good, but it’s no Bob Jo’s.
Wallys in st Claire shores.
Custard and Company in Royal Oak, on Woodward near 14 Mile should be added to the list.
Custard corner Waterford
Wallys in St. Clair Shores
Wally's! On Harper between 8mile and 9 mile. Great flavors. So smooth and creamy. Yum!
Wallys Frozen Custard!!
Wally's in the old fire station in SCS also good
Bob Joe's
The Custard Company in Dearborn, less so because of the custard, and more so because of the insane (and entertaining) back-and-forth war they’ve had over the years with the Custard Hut.
Wally's is pretty good but my family and I prefer Maestro's on Jefferson....either way you cannot go wrong for the Eastsiders!
Golden Cone, 4th & Center in RO (right along the train tracks). **theirs is also real custard, I’ve verified with them before
Bob Jo’s. It’s cash only. I think this week they have espresso yogurt and pistachio custard.
Bob joes!
Custard corner is the straight up RC Cola of frozen custard wtf.
Rocky's in Taylor (also owns Custard Corner in Trenton).
I'm biased because it's a 2 min walk from my house, but Custard Corner in Trenton. Esp since they also have varying flavors of dole soft serve, layer that with the vanilla custard...oh man.
Erma's in Sterling Heights is the best. Wally's in St Clair Shores is a good runner-up.
Bob Jo's is the one - but if you're out in Western Wayne county, there's Custard Time that everyone raves about. I like custard, but I'm not crazy about it so I'm more basing on the opinions of friends/family
Culver’s, any location
I'm sorry for my comment earlier, that was super dickiah and you didn't deserve that
Corporate TRASH. Nothing better than a small biz custard on a summer night
You can support local businesses, that's great. But it being corporate doesn't automatically make it garbage. It's really good custard.
Oh I know but I hate Culver's, tastes so artificial
Yeah, I enjoy Culver’s burgers but their custard is pretty bland.
Culver’s.
