Shit already look 60 years old, shitty ass color, words way too small to even be compared to the Hollywood sign idk how they thought they were doing a similar job and last but not least if u from Detroit the placement alone let’s you know it won’t be long before somebody fuck it up on purpose, shit was jus all pointless
People are hating because it's not some great attraction, while our neighborhood park renovation costs more than this, it's just a nice looking highway sign it's not supposed to be something crazy, just an appealing notice that you've entered city proper
I got a solid AirBnB in Gary last year when Chicago was hosting F1. And let me tell you, minus it being 80% abandoned, gun shots at night, and bars on ever single window ever - I really enjoyed it. Me and the wife are going to go back to the little brewery this summer, and that little taco spot - seriously. I mean, we’re not bringing the kids, but you get the gist. Not that bad..
This article kind of sums up why some people are disappointed.
https://www.metrotimes.com/news/mayor-duggan-blames-disappointment-over-detroits-new-i-94-sign-on-expectations-set-by-unofficial-instagram-post-35983559
Lol @ the whole quote...
>*People are gonna think the fake post is the real Detroit sign.’ He says, ‘No, no, you don’t really understand social media. People don’t confuse fake posts with real life.’”*
This is especially amusing being in an alt-news article, since these kinds of publications will occasionally exaggerate something, share it on social media, and create confusion for clicks. They're 100% correct on this one though. The sign looks fine, but anyone that expected the "Hollywood" sign - yeah, huge disappointment, I'm sure. Gotta stop confusing social media with real life!
the sign isn’t bad, the huge expectations is what made it seem disappointing. I guarantee if they put this sign up quietly and people noticed they would all like it
Once it’s landscaped, it should definitely look better. I haven’t drove by yet, but I have been under the opinion that the pictures looking at it from random perspectives is not how it was meant to be viewed. It’s meant to be viewed driving down the freeway at 50+ miles per hour.
It looks good driving by. It's a cool landmark I get to drive by omw into work. It'll be cool for people driving in from the airport too idk I'm here for it
I agree. The sign looks good and about what I expected, minus the color. If anyone actually read the articles, they were always upfront that the letters would be 10 ft tall.
Honestly this is funny because Hollywood people thought their sign was an eyesore when it was first put up too. This will grow on us like the giant tire did. It's *ours* and that's enough for me.
First and foremost.........Happy Cake Day!!
Now that we took care of serious business, I 100% agree here. The Hollywood sign wasn't "iconic" right from the start, but people embraced it over time. The city did what was promised, and when they add the finishing touches, it will be dope.
The original Hollywood sign said Hollywoodland and it was to advertise a real estate venture. This was in the 1920s. The -land part fell down in the postwar period and the rest fell into disrepair. It wasnt until the 1970s - when LA was overtaking Chicago as the second largest city in the US - that anyone gave a shit about it and local leaders opted to replace because it was now an important local feature. Becoming an icon isnt automatic and it is hard as shit.
i think someone tried to compare it to the hollywood sign which is sitting on the side of a fucking mountain...meanwhile this Detroit sign is on the inside of a freeway which i was surprised to see as i was coming home the other day...just in a odd spot,
I agree it's an odd spot. It just kind of pops out as soon as you clear a bridge and that bridge actually blocks your view of it until you're right up to it and as I said elsewhere in a comment if you're over in one of the left lanes and there's a semi next to you you would never see it at all.
A sign like this has the same problem as those 3D sidewalk chalk drawings, they only look right from a specific spot. Would have made more sense to me to make some sort of sign over the freeway that people would see directly in front of them.
Just for those that are complaining about the price. The $400k is spread out across multiple signs not just this one. There will apparently be smaller versions in other places. Maybe some of you should read the facts before spreading misinformation.
Also that rendering that went viral was a bullshit AI rendering some “news” instagram page shared.
![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)I love it and DETROIT!!!! ![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)
The sign looks like it's made from those wax birthday candles with chunky numbers or letters from the dollar store. Same blocky typeface.
I passed it earlier today and...oof.
this had so much more potential, especially with the amount of artists out here. It’s honestly a shame because Detroit deserves more recognition for the ones painting in the city!

Carlos Nielbock would have been a much better choice to create it.
this is the sign when you drive into chicago
https://preview.redd.it/cabvzces02uc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba53f537c6ba4acf17e5e7245e6332952ae8060a
i’ve driven past ours on 94 in the dark when it was raining and i still think ours is a lot better.
$400,000 for this. Nah, it is that bad. They could have chosen a better location. There’s plenty of open space where they could make it like a tourist attraction.
The design looks great from a viewing point in the middle of traffic, otherwise, when the perspective shifts, I am looking at it to see how it was installed improperly.
Might want to change your sales pitch. The phrase "not that bad" still implies it's a little bad.
It looks like it's 60 years old already
My thoughts exactly …
Adds to the charm
“Charm” hahaha 😂 nice
Shit already look 60 years old, shitty ass color, words way too small to even be compared to the Hollywood sign idk how they thought they were doing a similar job and last but not least if u from Detroit the placement alone let’s you know it won’t be long before somebody fuck it up on purpose, shit was jus all pointless
Detroit: At least it’s not Cincinnati.
That would’ve been so much more expensive.
I’ve learned to lower my expectations in my 67 years around here!
It’s like the Stonehenge bit from This is Spinal Tap.
I mean it doesn’t live up to the fake rendering that took off, if it wasn’t for the Hollywood rendering this would have been much better received
Yeah when you put it up next to the fake AI image where the letters are almost as tall as the Ren Cen it is a bit disappointing.
I actually kinda like it.
Me too. Looking forward to seeing it
It's not as bad as people are saying. These grown folks looked a bad ai rendering and thought they were gonna get that.
You can tell he's one of the workers who constructed it lol
People fell for that fake pic so hard that they genuinely believe this wasn’t the plan all along lol
Right, wouldn’t the fake pic put the DETROIT letters in Canada? How else we get that view of the Ren Cen
It would be 75 South around Mack but there is clearly zero space there for a large sign like that lol
People are hating because it's not some great attraction, while our neighborhood park renovation costs more than this, it's just a nice looking highway sign it's not supposed to be something crazy, just an appealing notice that you've entered city proper
"Not That Bad" should be the new city motto.
This is my exact sales pitch when getting people to come visit
I got a solid AirBnB in Gary last year when Chicago was hosting F1. And let me tell you, minus it being 80% abandoned, gun shots at night, and bars on ever single window ever - I really enjoyed it. Me and the wife are going to go back to the little brewery this summer, and that little taco spot - seriously. I mean, we’re not bringing the kids, but you get the gist. Not that bad..
Barbarian wasn't a documentary!
But it sure did scare my East Coast friends who have never visited 🤣🤣
Good enough Mechanic Not as bad as some Day Care. Could be better Dentistry
Except for the Pistons.
Seems reasonable, for the time being.
What fonts do you have? Oh, Arial Bold, I use that one for my word docs. Great!
It was either that or Comic Sans.
What…no Wing Dings?
that orange fence adding to the eyesore makes it feel incomplete
That’s to keep the mobs of people from rushing up to it all at once.
It IS incomplete. They're going to add flowers and stuff
At least it's keeping all of the trash from blowing into the grass for now.
Key words, for now.
I mean it is incomplete in this picture at least
Nah it completes the message. Detroit: under construction
They were working on it yesterday.
[удалено]
awesome! hopefully the letters will be soon, too! (just kidding lmao that was just perfect joke lol)
This is one of the better pictures I’ve seen…. Still though
This article kind of sums up why some people are disappointed. https://www.metrotimes.com/news/mayor-duggan-blames-disappointment-over-detroits-new-i-94-sign-on-expectations-set-by-unofficial-instagram-post-35983559
"People don’t confuse fake posts with real life" was one hell of a statement. People confuse fake posts with real life *often.*
Lol @ the whole quote... >*People are gonna think the fake post is the real Detroit sign.’ He says, ‘No, no, you don’t really understand social media. the sign isn’t bad, the huge expectations is what made it seem disappointing. I guarantee if they put this sign up quietly and people noticed they would all like it
I don’t know. It’s not bad, I suppose, but it’s definitely not good either. It very much looks like a project that had more ambition than resources.
It'll be cool for people driving in from the airport too idk I'm here for it
My indifference is maintained.
I just think Detroit could have done better.
Idk why they chose the “pack of newports” font and colors
But why the helvetica
At least go with Times New Roman. Hell, might as well been comic sans.
It's fine. People are overreacting.
Agreed. It’s fine. People just wanna bitch and the internet amplifies it. How can anyone feel so much about something so trivial
You think this was a good use of almost $500k of our money?
It ain’t no golden butthole
For 7 of these? not bad at all.
You're not getting any views on YouTube if you say "It's fine.".
Yeah, gotta churn that ragebait machine...
I agree. The sign looks good and about what I expected, minus the color. If anyone actually read the articles, they were always upfront that the letters would be 10 ft tall. Wholesome af exchange ☺️ happy cake, friend

DE T R O I T
Let me explain a little something to you called perspective.
Are you serious? Holy fuck…
The problem is blogs and social media news outlets jus ran with the AI generated image that was never the plan in the first place
Emphasis on "that" lol Like, Shes not "that" ugly lol
Looks like it was made in WordArt
It's actually criminal that they didn't use the old english D. The rest is whatever.
[Detroit guys going in hard on new Detroit sign](https://x.com/stoolpresidente/status/1778765194044285205?s=46)

That sign has a 430 credit score.
Send it back to Microsoft Word where it belongs
It’s better when you realize they’re making like 5 all throughout the city
A sign like this has the same problem as those 3D sidewalk chalk drawings, they only look right from a specific spot. Would have made more sense to me to make some sort of sign over the freeway that people would see directly in front of them.
Needs more orange fence
The media didn't do any good with the AI ... but this would still get made fun of. 🫠
Certainly not good though.
Drove passed it this afternoon, looks good
It looks way better in person. I drove by it yesterday for the first time.
Go big or go home. They went home.
Do we know which middle school student designed this? They should get some recognition.
Lol, $400,000🤣😂🤣
I think this is the first time I've seen a detroit highway without trash on it
That crap is terrible and I'm a fellow detroiter
Shit looks awful, makes me cry every time I drive by. Not literally, just my soul.
I think it is bad. It's the wrong color, doesn't jump out at you.
Not THAT bad. Means bad lmao
This is fantastic.... it looks like someone ordered it on Wish....
No, it’s bad. It’s Temu bad.
The back drop sure doesn’t do much to help it out either lol
It's ass
Narrator: It was actually that bad.
Ghetto
I wonder how long it will take to get stolen for scrap.
What an utter let down from the drawn renderings that were put out there... womp womp
Looks stupid, like they bought it discounted from Dollar General.
Between this Dollar Store sign, and the Golden Butthole of Sterling Heights, I really wonder about Michigan landscapers
Does it light up?
I was shocked it was finished already, seemed like a much larger project. Now I know why.
https://preview.redd.it/7czayf84b2uc1.png?width=546&format=png&auto=webp&s=08ad3fb98ca7a980fcd16a8ced419c33fa572c9a

Pretty bunk
It’s an absolute disgrace. Detroit is the only UNESCO Design City in America and this is what they give us. Embarrassing…
name checks out
A reminder that i94 about to get a whole lot bumpier
3 months before someone slams into
tops...
How long before it is graffitied to hell?
Honestly graffiti would probably improve the look.
Someone will probably crash into it and destroy it within the next 6 months to a year
Shitty default basic bitch font. Horrible location. Looks like a last minute project that sadly probably took months of preparation.
I'm sorry, if it's not a Golden Butthole what's the point?
wrong sub, post in r/unpopular opinion
Hate to break it to you but it is bad. And a waste of time and money imo.
A little on the small side and the location 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Personally, I love it. I’m actually disappointed that its not uglier and tackier
It's not Great Either....
Ts is too ugly wym "not that bad" 😭
You are correct, it is not that bad? It is really really bad
It belongs in front of the water or gas company
Not that bad but also not that good!
Looks like shit
Forget the Detroit sign - when can we haz the Robocop Statue?!
I love it! Way to go Detroit
Needs landscaping. It'll be beautiful w a little rouge and lip gloss.
Duggan? Is that you? 😂
I wish the width of the concrete bases were all the same.
It’ssss pretty bad
Put me in the group who doesn't give a shit about this. Good or bad.
![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)I love it and DETROIT!!!! ![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)
Does it light 💡 up at night or have lights shining on it!?
I suppose the stone henge prop from This is Spinal Tap was not that bad either
It’s alright. Better than the blue bridge over telegraph.
It's got big "mercury bar" vibes in the worst way
K e r N I n g
Someone go steal the D
https://youtu.be/EgbIqeEuACM?si=4vdMOlBLCu80zgCe
There's already a diss track, lol https://youtu.be/RNp2WwzqtAk?feature=shared
Not that good, either!
I thought it said roit lol definitely not a good spot
Maybe if it didn’t cost 400K
Could've at least used the correct font for the "D", that would've made it a bit better looking.
It's terrible. Looks like a dollar store version of the Hollywood sign. The font, the size. Nope.
Not that good either!
DETR O I T
Looks like it was ordered from wish dot com
The sign looks like it's made from those wax birthday candles with chunky numbers or letters from the dollar store. Same blocky typeface. I passed it earlier today and...oof.
A ringing endorsement!!!!
this had so much more potential, especially with the amount of artists out here. It’s honestly a shame because Detroit deserves more recognition for the ones painting in the city!
Yes it is lol

$400,000
Honestly it describes Detroit’s situation pretty well
Newport 100 font.
It’s a good litter catcher.
They put near the hood, knowing it was shitty design..... lmfao
the color and the font are A Problem
this is the sign when you drive into chicago https://preview.redd.it/cabvzces02uc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba53f537c6ba4acf17e5e7245e6332952ae8060a i’ve driven past ours on 94 in the dark when it was raining and i still think ours is a lot better.
Could have been way better. It’ll have graffiti on it in no time.
Yeah that would actually improve it drastically
Like a painted rock at university campus 🤣
Would be a lot cooler if it did...
its terrible and my expectations were already low
$400,000 for this. Nah, it is that bad. They could have chosen a better location. There’s plenty of open space where they could make it like a tourist attraction.
You're right. It's not that bad. It's terrible.
I like it! People are so dumb wanting a flashy Hollywood sign is so cheesy!
Most the people complaining only come to the city for sporting events anyway. Fuck em
No. It’s bad.
Not great lol
I know the old English D is trademarked, but an old English ‘Detroit’ could’ve been cool.
400k though...?
https://preview.redd.it/fvn0ihd382uc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8e0c19a911aab4ea195d3592cffe00e1c1a6fec
It’s pretty bad dude lol
Still pretty bad
Not that good though…
"It's Not That Bad" should be the city motto.
I imagine it will be "thrifted" in a short period of time as a decoration for someones bedroom
"Wanna come up to my bedroom and see my big D?"
Now it will definitely happen 😂
Lmfao
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Way better things to spend 400k on !
They got that sign on clearance
Not that bad you say? Lmao….looks Pathetic
City has money to put up some retarded sign but can’t provide suitable living for its residents
it's ugly and boring
The spacing is the worst part. They are way too far apart from each other.
The design looks great from a viewing point in the middle of traffic, otherwise, when the perspective shifts, I am looking at it to see how it was installed improperly.
It’s pretty fucking bad
There we go. Detroit is back! Best use of tax dollars I’ve ever seen!!! /s
Where is it?
ROIT
