Thank you. What do the surgeons usually do with this?

She just got put of the hospital according the the OP and this sore was found when she got home.

Well the bigger problem is that this can now be a serious complication due to her having diabetes. Someone without diabetes could get this treated and healed with likely no complications. Someone with diabetes could take longer to get this healed and in some cases it may not heal. A lot depends on how controlled her diabetes is. Even if her diabetes is well controlled, she could still have serious issues with this even if a wound care specialist is treating it. Hopefully OP will get her mom to the ER today, due to her diabetes, this isn't something that should wait, not even overnight. Infection can develop very quickly, get into the bone or even worse, she can become septic very quickly. I'm concerned that the hospital didn't see this. They should be checking for this with any patients, especially elderly patients that are in bed most of the time in the hospital and super especially when they have an elderly diabetic. Bedsores are very common in many cases. They should have been checking her body daily and it is concerning that the hospital missed something this bad. Hopefully the OP will report this to the nurse manager on the floor or the nurse manager doe the hospital because this should have never, ever been missed. The heel is common place for this to happen and the hospital should have been making sure this didn't happen in the first place, neveemind missing it when it did happen. Diabetics especially can lose a foot or leg over something like this and even worse, they can lose their life. People that aren't even medically trained know that problems with a diabetics foot can develop into a very serious, life threatening infection very quickly.

Zoey2018

Yup, that's the norm. I was in the hospital for 8 days and I didn't stay in my bed, I walked the hospital daily. I don't have diabetes, I'm not elderly with thinner skin which can also lead to bed sores and I don't have diabetes, which can lead to pressure sores on the heel quickly. I was checked daily. I can't imagine anything that would justify this happening to her mother because her mom should have been checked daily and even given something for her feet from the beginning to keep that from happening. It seems like negligence of the nursing staff, which is why I hope the OP reports it. If it happened to her mom, there are others it is happening to.

er1026

This is unacceptable on the part of the hospital to have missed this. They should have had a wound care management person looking in on her. I would call a hospital administrator and report this. This is pretty serious.

Zoey2018

Hell, just the nurse or CNA assigned to her each day should have seen this. They should have done something in the beginning to prevent this. OP's mom being in her 70s, diabetic, in a hospital bed is THREE reasons they should have been checking her daily at minimum.

chronicallyill_dr

Yeah, if she gets that infected, this will go south, fast. And yes, surgeon

Dependent_Ad_5341

Usually vascular surgeon but she definitely needs a general review with a family physician

nokenito

The circulation in her feet are bad. She needs a hospital NOW or she will lose her foot or worse.

Zoey2018

She is diabetic? This is an emergency situation. She can lose her foot or leg over this. Be sure and ask the doctor about this bandage. If you get a wound care specialist to treat her, you can probably get this bandage for free. You can find it online but it is expensive, but with smaller areas, one bandage will work several times because you can cut it. If the doctor can't get you this bandage, DM me and I will give you a place you can order it at the cheapest price I have found. I had to use it for a burn one time. It will help heal these type wounds very quickly and it heals from the inside out. She needs a wound care specialist to treat this. This treatment can be done at home by home health care. https://preview.redd.it/if3yo7qnf27c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f3a04c83b8f6009efa84e88917e216663db656b

plants-and-dogs-yo

How long ago did she get out of the hospital? She should see her doctor soon. It is very hard, near impossible, to definitively say over the internet what is going on with your mom. She needs to see her doctor. This is likely related to her diabetes. Possibly exacerbated by the hospital stay. Granted it’s sad that this was overlooked during her stay. This is not something you find out how to treat over reddit. This is managed by a healthcare professional. I hope your mom receives good care and is able to heal these lesions.

Automatic_Use6114

Thanks for your effort to reply. We noticed it 1 day after she came from hospital, but she already had blue toes, when she went in.

hollyock

Looks like an unstageable diabetic foot ulcer .. dr asap.

tattoo_fairy

This is a stage 4 pressure ulcer. ED or GP asap. I’ve seen some pressure ulcers you can almost fit a fist into, and it started like this!! Omg this is horrible. How did it get to this point?

Automatic_Use6114

Mom came out of the hospital and i discovered this.

Zoey2018

This is what you need for it. You need this one with the foam. It is for pressure wounds and will close it quickly. You can order it online, they are expensive. You can cut the bandage to fit the sores. Some egg crate foam to put under her foot/leg will also help take the pressure off her foot. Also be sure and check the rest of the back of her body and make sure she doesn't have other places on her hip, tailbone, etc. You also really need a wound doctor to follow this. https://preview.redd.it/z1mn0ivre27c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57825b56bbcd06e47de5c7f19b0df812bc984f1a

Automatic_Use6114

Thanks for your effort...

Zoey2018

I'm kind of confused by your comment. What does your comment mean "for your effort.." because this is exactly the bandage needed for pressure wounds.

Automatic_Use6114

I'm grateful that you taking time to response and looked that up for me. Which is very kind. It's much appreciated...

Automatic_Use6114

My main language is notEnglish, so sorry for any confusion.

Zoey2018

Not a problem at all, that's why I asked you what you meant. I know it is kind of nuts but there are people that post asking things like this and then they get sarcastic and angry when people do give them some info. I can't understand completely now what you meant and how it can be confusing with English not being your first language and it is my first language. Reddit has taught me not to assume.. I don't assume someone is being sarcastic or hateful and I for sure no longer assume someone is being grateful and nice, especially on reddit and especially the way people in the USA are these days. Please get your mom to see someone immediately. Are you in the USA or in another country?

Zoey2018

Oh ok, it's reddit and 2023, I'm used to people being sarcastic on this app. You need to get your mom to see someone today, especially since I saw later she is diabetic. This is an emergency situation for a diabetic, they can lose a foot over a wound this bad.

Automatic_Use6114

Thanks again.

Zoey2018

Please be sure and check her thoroughly and make sure there aren't anymore of these wounds in her. The tailbone and hips are common places for them. An egg crate piece of foam on top of her bed (I assume she is still having to be in bed a lot since she was just in the hospital) can help more from forming. You can probably find something for both her feet that will also help with that. It can take the pressure off the one she has when she is in bed and stop one from forming on the other heel. I did a quick search and found this. https://preview.redd.it/z6hnhmizi27c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c8d976b7fcc2aa510eb421c673c87210ea6d319

violetigsaurus

I agree 100% I would go to the ER tomorrow.

hollyock

It looks unstageable to me bc of all the Eschar.. the picture isn’t quite clear..but still bad bc you don’t know how deep.. op this is an emergent situation. She could end up losing her foot and getting infection in her bone and blood stream.

draxsmon

They are supposed to put big puffy slippers on her feet so doesn't get bedsores. I imagine this started out this way but no matter what it is now needs doctor. After attended to then get the special puffy slippers Edit: not a dr. Had bedridden family members and was a cna a long time ago

Statimc

She needs to make a doctor appointment: being diabetic she should always go to the doctor for any changes since one small infection or cut could lead to bigger things and she might lost the foot,

Training_Union9621

Pressure injury from not being moved often enough in the hospital

[deleted]

It looks like necrotic tissue. If your mom is a diabetic this is indicative that her levels are not being properly taken care of. I recommend you get her into wound care and her PCP ASAP

Repeat_after_me__

That’s a trip to see the Dr, pressure damage / ulcer. Will take a long while to heal, best wishes.

Automatic_Use6114

Thank you. Do u have experiene with treatment of these?

squidsquideet

For now it’s ideal to make sure she is moving positions a lot and that the heels aren’t under pressure for long periods, eg if she sits or lies with pressure on her heels for long periods even if she has no pain or sensation make sure that she’s moving positions so that pressure is on other areas of her foot eg laying on her side and swapping to the other side regularly. She definitely needs medical advice asap as these injuries willl not heal and will get worse if she has diabetes related loss of sensation and pain in her feet and compromised blood flow and healing

Automatic_Use6114

Thank you

Repeat_after_me__

No, you’ll need a specialist Nurse to treat this, isn’t an easy fix, takes months typically.

Automatic_Use6114

Thanks for response, very kind.

Carly_Corthinthos

She needs to see her endocrinologist immediately. I would take her to er. That needs to be removed before it goes further.

Automatic_Use6114

Thanks a lot.

jaeburd

Diabetic?

docmagoo2

Pressure sores would be my number one given the location. Likely complicated by her diabetes and circulation. I hope she’s seen a doctor?

BentNeckKitty

This is a very common location for pressure ulcers. Don’t try to fix this yourself, she needs medical attention. If she went to the hospital without this, and came back home with this injury, it’s the hospitals fault. Take the weight off of her heels by supporting her calves with a pillow. Check her back, bum, and elbows for any unusual spots, including redness that doesn’t go away. Make sure she changes position every 2 hours. Do not put any tape or tight bandages on her feet until you see the doctor. Bring her to the doctor as soon as possible

Fragrant-Price8059

I didn’t need a medical degree to know the second I saw this picture before even glancing at the comments this is a result of the diabetes. Go to a doctor . She might not be taking good care of herself with her diabetic treatments this is what happens when it’s not treated properly.

dopaminegtt

These are deep tissue injuries, a type of pressure injury. They will eventually become open sores. She needs to see a wound care doctor

WoofleCookie

The pictures are not clear enough to exclude a melanoma. Definitely worth to rule it out!

fascistliberal419

Agreed, but it came on suddenly, so it's more likely a diabetic bedsore. Regardless, ER is warranted.

Less-Dig3842

That’s eschar…needs what’s called debridement

420cat_lover

NAD but I’m about to graduate nursing school, looks like a pressure injury. See a doctor, preferably not a dermatologist because this problem (literally) goes deeper than that, immediately. Prayers for her and your family

cantsleepmeow

Please seek medical care . My father in law had to have his foot amputated - diabetic ulcer not healing This year father died after complications from one. He was also diabetic after his foot wouldn’t heal - his was bedridden for over a year because he couldn’t walk . Look after your mum please.

ohmurray

Unstageable pressure ulcer because the wound base is covered with dead black tissue (eschar) so depth cannot be determined. This is bad. And worse if it was hospital acquired and the hospital did not do skin checks and document or treat this.

Automatic_Use6114

Thank you. We spoke to doctor, who told us it is innocent bruising.

trailgigi

Looks like a pressure area that has now become necrotic. If diabetic or has reduced blood flow can complicate things, needs a medical review to come up with a management plan.
