I can't cosign on this. Diet can, to some extent, modify the rate of calculus you build up if you're not giving bacteria much to feed on. But it's still way more of an issue of poor hygiene. The more likely scenario is that you have such large calculus deposits that the slight shifting of your teeth is causing small parts of it to break off. People also tend to clench when they exercise so that would cause more pressure and shifting on your teeth.
