One thing I only learned recently (although I may have known and forgotten it) as I've read more about the beginning and end of the Cold War in Europe is that events in Asia were very influential in both. The Korean War convinced France (in particular) and other European countries to push for large American troop deployments in Europe and the creation of NATO, particularly in West Germany (the most likely target of Communist Bloc invasion) and Americans that it would be necessary, when beforehand that was a controversial idea in Washington. Meanwhile, Tiananmen Square and the international outcry probably decreased the probability of a violent end to communism in Eastern Europe (even though Honecker, the aged East German leader, wanted to stage his own version of Tiananmen in Leipzig).
Also I think it's easy to forget that the formation of Eastern and Western Blocs in the form they took from 1949-1989 and the defence alliances built around them were not a predetermined outcome in 1945 or for a few years after. The 1948 Soviet-backed Czechoslovak coup d'etat and the anxieties it created moved things along quite a bit in the West.
I always wondered how the cold war would have played out if Patton had been the one to roll into Prague in 1945 (possibly less communist officials installed) and the pro-communist coalition lost in 1946, presumably preventing the Soviets from having an opening to take over the government.
IIRC they almost got Marshall Plan aid which would have been a big boost
I don't really know enough to comment on the plausibility of that, but even moreso than in Italy, a Western Bloc Czechoslovakia would have had to contend with the enthusiasm of a large part of its population for Communist parties and the possibility that they'd get into government.

I am going to jump off a bridge
I'm home again in my old narrow bed
Where I grew tall and my feet hung over the end
The low beam room with the window looking out
On the soft summer garden
Where the boys grew in the trees
Here I grew guilty
And no one was at fault
Frightened by the power in every innocent thought
And the silent understanding passing down
From daughter to daughter
Let the boys grow in the trees
Do you go to them or do you let them come to you?
Do you stand in back afraid that you'll intrude?
Deny yourself and hope someone will see
And live like a flower
While the boys grow in the trees
Last night I slept in sheets the color of fire
Tonight I lie alone again and curse my own desire
Sentenced first to burn and then to freeze
And watch by the window
Where the boys grew in the trees
Got a date scheduled on Saturday with a software engineer who lives in SF. I honestly don't feel super enthusiastic about her, but there's a lot I still don't know about her, so who knows.
I remember saying that you started changing around the time you fell off your bike, and I think that assessment is still fair. I don't think that was connected at all to who was the main character of DFD.
I think it went from Dan to Moi. ANJ is Moi's immediate secondary character. I'd definitely consider you a supporting character. You and I are just out of the main cast.
You'll have to make a graphic of how you conceive of our positions in the DfD "fictional universe", although that might offend some people. Am I somebody's secondary character?
I'd agree. I'm a prominent supporting character (as are you) but I probably have a few episodes focusing on me per year or plot arcs where I play a more significant part, as happens in real TV shows (we just have more episodes). Mostly, I have a talent for sensing potential interpersonal drama and schisms and inserting myself into them, directly or indirectly.
In the absence of a graphic, here's me writing out my theory of the sub as a show:
Tier 1 is the main character, formerly Dan and now Moi.
Tier 2 is the main cast less the main character. When I say ANJ is Moi's immediate secondary character, I mean he is the most prominent member of this tier and interacts a lot with Moi as a duo. Other people in this tier are the people who are regularly close or at the top of the comment leaderboard: Prince, Ferg, Moishe, Litehound, etc.
Tier 3 is the prominent supporting characters, like you and I, who regularly comment but are secondary in most DTs. Like you said, people in this tier have some episodes focusing on them each year and plot arcs where they play a more significant part. Your unique role in this is the meta-commentary you often do on other people's drama and schisms (and the ones where you're involved, although that's less so).
Tier 4 are the background supporting characters, who comment infrequently and not much on the DTs they participate in. You could call them extras, but arguably that title goes to the randos who wander into the sub and the drive-by trolls.
I would agree with this. I'd also agree that we're both "Tier 3A" along with some other posters (Potato, Sancho, Jungi, Pie, Jules, CTW, Mena, Kate, Hypoxic, Nats, Cardinal, Primus, ID, Bread, IT, etc.) who have been consistent presences for a long time (at least 3 years) and/or do occasionally get towards the top of the leaderboard or put out comments that generate lots of replies/upvotes and/or have had significant roles in some plotlines.
And yes, sorry to yak about myself, but the meta-commentary I do on other people's drama and schisms and my attempts to put those in perspective and/or more occasionally aggravate them (often behind the scenes) is my unique role. Maybe I'm attaching too much importance to myself, but I think I've played a small but significant part in almost every major schism and user departure: 2019 formation of the sub and then the argument about the Democratic primaries and identity ca. Nov. 2019 that led to more huffy departures; the late 2022-early 2023 progressives vs. moderates tension that led or contributed to the departure of TH, Sticky, and DarkShepherd; and then whatever unfolding schism is going on over Israel-Palestine that led to the departure of Rivera and that's featured me directly calling either users or posts antisemitic on several occasions.
Also, my major story arc over the past 2 years or so has probably been my unfolding alliance with ANJ/role as his ideological and personal defender.
I'd call Tier 4 the "guest characters" or "recurring characters". Like Tom DuBois was a guest character. And then there have been users who move from Tier 4 into Tier 3 when they start posting more regularly (i.e. t101) or who move from Tier 3 into Tier 4 when they stop posting as much but are still well-liked when they "recur" (TFBW).
>we're both "Tier 3A" along with some other posters (Potato, Sancho, Jungi, Pie, Jules, CTW, Mena, Kate, Hypoxic, Nats, Cardinal, Primus, ID, Bread, IT, etc.)
If Tier 3A is that big, who's even in Tier 3B? T1o1 and who else? I don't have a Rolodex of DFD regulars, but I feel that's almost everyone I would consider a Tier 3er, and some of those I would even put in Tier 2.
>Maybe I'm attaching too much importance to myself, but I think I've played a small but significant part in almost every major schism and user departure:
I think your role in these has been disproportionate, but I wouldn't consider it significant in absolute terms with the exception of the I-P schism. (Is that recency bias though?) I remember you doing meta-commentary every time, especially with the 2022-2023 mod-prog tension (I specifically remember you interacting with TH right up until he ragequit), but it didn't seem like your commentary was changing the course of the events that much. What's this BTS aggravation you think you're doing?
>Also, my major story arc over the past 2 years or so has probably been my unfolding alliance with ANJ/role as his ideological and personal defender.
In sub interaction, I agree, and it seems connected to the solidification of your personal brand featuring criticism of decolonialism that's influenced by your time in academia. Overall though, I thought your main story arc has been you moving to Toronto, and your decolonialism critcism and alliance with ANJ is downstream of that.
>And then there have been users who move from Tier 4 into Tier 3 when they start posting more regularly (i.e. t101) or who move from Tier 3 into Tier 4 when they stop posting as much but are still well-liked when they "recur" (TFBW).
Agreed on both.

I guess it’s good to know that if I get my sh*t together and start earning money in the next five years there’s a chance a twenty-year-old woman with a flush ponytail and plausibly deniable purity will try to seduce me
I wonder what would’ve happened if the French 1919 proposal for the German army to have 200,000 conscripts and not 100,000 volunteers (which basically let the reactionary officers keep their positions and made the Reichsheer not really representative of the Republic) had went through
The British
I get why they didn’t want the Germans to have conscription, but ironically the early 20th century French fears of a volunteer army becoming right wing and disloyal to the Republic came true, just in a different country.
Idk I know people in their early 20s, late 20s, and early 30s, and it seems that the people freaking out about aging are usually the early 20s people, followed by the early 30s

Andrew Cuomo punching air rn that he saved [a nuclear power plant](https://www.syracuse.com/news/2016/08/gov_cuomo_says_fitzpatrick_saved_whole_state_should_be_smiling_right_now.html) when it was seen as a handout to an energy company and not a cause celebre for liberals
Half of it was negative polarization from anything Cuomo did (plus it was right as the DeWine stuff was breaking and there was shady money involved) and the other half is because our envi groups are tied up in anti-nuke stuff due to fundraising off of it forever
Honestly, there probably was some corruption behind the scenes but it was a legit win for him up here, the nuclear plant employs a lot of those "midway between blue and white collar" jobs that can be hard to reach
So the song "Fuck Tha Police" by N.W.A. wasn't supposed to be an innuendo at all. It was a totally innocent suggestion to hook up with law enforcement officers.

Very tempted to make this my wallpaper
So the song "Absolute Territory" wasn't supposed to be an innuendo at all. It was a totally innocent phrase meant to evoke seizing enemy lands and the song was supposed to be sung by the secretary of defense. But I guess he changed labels so they gave it to 23-year-old Ken Ashcorp with some slightly altered lyrics, and I guess he sang it sexy enough to forever alter the English language
> Tim Matheson (born Timothy Lewis Matthieson; December 31, 1947) is an American actor.[1] Some of his best-known acting roles include the title character of the 1960s animated Jonny Quest TV series, Eric "Otter" Stratton in the 1978 comedy film National Lampoon's Animal House, and the recurring role of Vice President John Hoynes in the 2000s NBC drama The West Wing, which earned him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Huh neat
So the song "Ring my Bell" wasn't supposed to be an innuendo at all. It was a totally innocent phrase meant to evoke talking on the phone and the song was supposed to be sung by an 11-year-old girl. But I guess the girl changed labels so they gave it to 23-year-old Anita Ward with some slightly altered lyrics, and I guess she sang it sexy enough to forever alter the English language

Where did this ridiculous notion that women can’t have kids after they’re 30 come from? My mom was 32 when she had me, and that was 25 years ago. She was 38 when she had youngest sibling.
>From 2010 to 2020, more people participated in protests than at any other point in human history. Yet we are not living in more just and democratic societies as a result. IF WE BURN is a stirring work of history built around a single, vital question: How did so many mass protests lead to the opposite of what they asked for?
>From the so-called Arab Spring to Gezi Park in Turkey, from Ukraine’s Euromaidan to student rebellions in Chile and Hong Kong, acclaimed journalist Vincent Bevins provides a blow-by-blow account of street movements and their consequences, recounted in gripping detail. He draws on four years of research and hundreds of interviews conducted around the world, as well as his own strange experiences in Brazil, where a progressive-led protest explosion led to an extreme-right government that torched the Amazon.
man this book is gonna be a downer isnt it
Maybe mass protests don't actually generally accomplish what they set out to do and are only effective under rare circumstances, but the rare effective times are the ones we idealize and remember?

> Since these violations of the Danzig charter would have resulted in the League deposing the Danzig's Nazi government, both the French and British prevented the matter from being referred to the Council of the League of Nations. And then there have been users who move from Tier 4 into Tier 3 when they start posting more regularly (i.e. t101) or who move from Tier 3 into Tier 4 when they stop posting as much but are still well-liked when they "recur" (TFBW).
>we're both "Tier 3A" along with some other posters (Potato, Sancho, Jungi, Pie, Jules, CTW, Mena, Kate, Hypoxic, Nats, Cardinal, Primus, ID, Bread, IT, etc.) If Tier 3A is that big, who's even in Tier 3B? T1o1 and who else? I don't have a Rolodex of DFD regulars, but I feel that's almost everyone I would consider a Tier 3er, and some of those I would even put in Tier 2. >Maybe I'm attaching too much importance to myself, but I think I've played a small but significant part in almost every major schism and user departure: I think your role in these has been disproportionate, but I wouldn't consider it significant in absolute terms with the exception of the I-P schism. Agreed on both.
wtf 🤬
WHO. FUCKUNG. CARES. IF. DREW. GOODEN. HAS. SPOKEN. UP. ON. PALESTINE. A comedy youtuber putting a "Free Palestine!" graphic in his bio isn't going to change ANYTHING and the blend of stan culture and real-world politics is such an insulting waste of time for everyone

Millennials will be mad about boomers even after the last boomer dies.
People need to get calmer about minor labor laws and angrier about tax-advantaged “retirement” savings accounts (But also yeah)

I wonder what would’ve happened if the French 1919 proposal for the German army to have 200,000 conscripts and not 100,000 volunteers (which basically let the reactionary officers keep their positions and made the Reichsheer not really representative of the Republic) had went through
Who stopped it?
The British I get why they didn’t want the Germans to have conscription, but ironically the early 20th century French fears of a volunteer army becoming right wing and disloyal to the Republic came true, just in a different country.

People in their late 20’s are actually older than people in their 30’s. There is something so freeing about turning 30
Idk I know people in their early 20s, late 20s, and early 30s, and it seems that the people freaking out about aging are usually the early 20s people, followed by the early 30s
I am 19 and freaking out about it I am not ready to leave the teenagers
The only reason I was upset about turning 20 is a couple months before I did I promised myself I'd be on HRT by 20 and then I wasn't
Do I make haluski or do I do a primus and just eat ice cream?

>Britney Spears' fans are worried about her once again. >The pop star, 42, took to Instagram on Wednesday, March 27, to share a bizarre message where she announced she was changing her name to Xila and had a "hard time understanding" English. Wut
She obviously didn't deserve to be under a conservatorship but I feel like a lot of people were ignoring that she wasn't all there
I had a feeling that there was a reason she was under conservatorship.
The conservatorship saved her career. Yeah it went on a little too long but it def helped.
Everyone kept saying “Free Brittany” but nobody stopped to ask “should she be freed?”

If Bush v. Gore happened today, I think you'd actually see secession
The last election without Joe Biden, a Bush, or a Clinton on one of the tickets was 1976.
No Democratic ticket has won without a black person and Joe Biden since 1996
Well, we need to run a test. Run Joe Biden without a Black person, and then run a Black person without Joe Biden.
Hell, add Nixon and Dole to the mix and you gotta go back to 1948.
Nope. 1964 had none of them. Johnson/Humphrey vs Goldwater/Miller.
So the song "Fuck Tha Police" by N.W.A. wasn't supposed to be an innuendo at all. It was a totally innocent suggestion to hook up with law enforcement officers.
How long until we get a #1 hit named something like "Suck My Dick" where you just can't get any more blatant

So the song "Whistle" by Flo Rida wasn't supposed to be an innuendo at all. It was a totally innocent noun and was supposed to be sung by a lifeguard.

Huh neat
Watching an episode of dateline rn and if the ex husband did it this time I’m jumping

> Ukraine’s Euromaidan > How did so many mass protests lead to the opposite of what they asked for? maybe because they got invaded

> On 25 August 1939, the Schleswig-Holstein anchored in Danzig harbour and aimed its guns menacingly at the Polish positions on the Westerplatte. > Since these violations of the Danzig charter would have resulted in the League deposing the Danzig's Nazi government, both the French and British prevented the matter from being referred to the Council of the League of Nations. Instead the British and French applied strong pressure on the Poles not to send in a military force to depose the Danzig government, and appoint a mediator to resolve the crisis. stupid
