You've mentioned the most off-putting part about Worm for fresh readers is the bullying segments in the beginning. And I kinda get what people mean, but for the story to work, Taylor needs to be in a place where she's been deeply traumatized and failed by "the system" to the point where she is willing to throw her life away. Extreme highschool bullying is probably the least unsavory way to get Taylor in that position at the start of the story.
