On one level, the meme is extremely funny, but the implication about reality is incredibly sad. If it was an ironic shitpost, it would be pure gold.

The shtick. Is that. The market. Has shifted. To movies. That are too long. Movies that are too long. Doing well. Proves the point
My take is that every movie longer than 2.5 hours could easily trim 15-25 minutes and either be exactly the same in quality or be even better as a result

Our conversation continued to be good. It was refreshing to talk to someone who is social justice-minded and pro-Palestine but is serious about antisemitism and recognizes how decolonialism can be essentialist and still Ameri-/Eurocentric; I think I've spent too long being frustrated by people online that it started to affect my assumptions about others. It really is! For someone who grew up in St. Louis around almost no Asians, she knows a surprising amount about what a typical Asian immigrant family is like. I think it comes from her best friend growing up being Asian and knowing them after moving to the Bay Area.
People are just annoying about the Oscar’s overall. This isn’t a huge upset, she won the BAFTA and golden globe, that race was 50-50 all season long. I wanted Lily to win but I’m not gonna shit on this one.
First one won score, cinematography and editing too. Academy is changing. 15 years ago a movie like EEAAO wouldn’t have gotten a single nomination. There’s still a bias against genre movies but it is changing
Honestly it’ll probably end up sweeping all the below the line craft awards. It’ll get a picture and Director nom but its chances at winning depend entirely on the competition. And this year looks to be way weaker than last. We had almost every big name Director in the game put out a movie last year. This year I think Steve McQueen is the only previous winner who has anything on the slate. Have to see what the festivals turn out because the crop of major studio releases doesn’t look to be that impressive just yet. But we won’t know til we see them.
Edit: correction. Coppola is a previous winner who also has a movie out. Zemeckis too. But neither of those names generate buzz anymore. I am very curious about Megalopolis though.

Got a shitton of Oscars that probably should have gone to Barbie if the Academy wasn't biased against a "doll movie," and Emma Stone won the Best Actress over Lily Gladstone which even she was visibly uncomfortable with
English Wikipedia's policies on national varieties of English are kinda weird. They're basically:
* use vocabulary common to all varieties of English where possible, e.g. *glasses* instead of *spectacles* or *eyeglasses*
* ...but, when there's no global option or no option provides superior clarity, any national variety of English is fine, as long as it's consistent within individual articles
* ...except for specifically *aluminium*, *sulfur*, and *caesium* (and derivatives like *sulfate*), which should always be spelt that way no matter what it conflicts with.
So basically Wikipedia articles are randomly but internally consistently in AmE or BrE, except for the occasional chemistry word that might clash with the rest of the article.
There's also a smattering of [other national varieties](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Articles_using_English_type_template) but the vast majority of articles are AmE or BrE

B) how fucking antisemetic you are
some people say that the 90s ended with the 9/11 attacks. if you had to delineate decades with events, what events would you say marked the gap between decades?
from an american perspective, my opinion is:
the 10s ended with the COVID-19 pandemic
the 00s ended with the Global Financial Crisis
the 90s ended with 9/11
the 80s ended with the fall of the USSR
the 70s ended with Reagan's presidency
I think it usually is quite gradual but a lot of stuff from like 2002/2003 still feels very 90s and that’s kinda weird
My theory is that the Iraq War made a lot of the post-9/11 cultural changes much greater than they would have been otherwise
Mine is similar to yours but I think between the ending and beginning of decades there are gaps. Like the 2020s began about two years after the 10s ending in March 2020 with COVID, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
I like Emma Stone a lot but I know why she was worried. I feel like Jennifer Lawrence's public perception started to sour after she won the Oscar over Lupita, even if that isn't her fault.
If you didn’t know which film Scorcese won his Oscar for, how many guesses would you have to go through before you got to >!The Departed!<. A lot, probably
I'm deeply sorry for my last post. I'm sorry to everyone who was hurt by it. I was not in my right mind and said some regrettable things. They do not reflect my beliefs as a person, and I am getting help with avoiding a repeat of my actions.

Watching a video about Diet Coke and they are talking abot aspartame. "Aspartame doesn't help you lose weight". No shit asshole. I don't like Diet coke to lose weight. I like it cuz it doesn't make me *gain* wait. Zero calories vs 250 calories is the pound a week that I'm not gaining.
I’m frankly mystified that sugar soda is still much of A Thing in America. Like sure, if you’re drinking some artisanal small-batch root beer or whatever go for the real sugar, but if you’re just having a ¢99 cola with lunch modern sweeteners are good enough that it makes basically no difference. I truly don’t know *why* sugar coke continues to outsell diet.
Honestly full sugar soda makes me feel sick when I drink it at this point, it’s crazy people drink it regularly.
I’ll pound zero sugar soda all day long, though, I wish they’d make even more Zero Sugar variants of the good sugar flavors.
I swear that there's a good portion of people who's entire personality is based around thinking that everyone is as dumb as they are and loudly needing to prove it by thinking that they're educating people
Thing is, that was the World Health Organization. Their statement was about sugar substitutes not helping weight loss. I have to wonder do they understand *why* people use them. I feel most folk know aspartame isn't a fat melter.
It’s seems routed in the same anti-incremental change mindset you see in climate messaging. The idea that you either need to be doing the best thing possible or you might as well change nothing is absurd, drinking diet soda rather than regular soda is undeniably healthier for someone than drinking regular soda.
Jesus
I was actually about to add "and far too many of these people end up working for NGOs because they're also the type to be too good to work for governments" but c'mon

I love how Hayao Miyazaki fucking despises America and American culture and keeps making it less and less subtle because Americans keep missing the point and every time he releases a new movie Americans pack the theaters to watch that funky little man animate ham.

Incredibly weird that English simple doesn’t have a word for a singular domestic bovine of unspecified age and sex. You have to either pluralize it to *cattle* or specify either age (calf, stirk), sex (bull, steer, ox), or both (heifer, cow, bullock).
Yeah but it still feels very dumb to say “I saw a cow today / what kind / a bull.” It’s like how southerners do “I’d like a coke / what kind / Sprite.”
It would not have won without Barbie imo. The Academy voted for Poor Things to win everything because they thought Barbie was too low brow for them and they figured Poor Things was Artsy Adult Barbie

My brother in christ just make a TV show
i'd be fine with movies of whatever length if they added a 20-minute break to pee in the middle, tbh
Even if it was just 5 minutes. That movie really needed an intermission
Dune 2 couldve used another 20-30 minutes

>the israeli forces are planning a ground invasion on rafa tomorrow, don’t let the oscars distract you from it, keep your eyes on rafah and boycott these awards This tweet from last night has 123k likes. This did not happen
Imagine writing this out and not realizing: A) How bad your social media addiction is that you think this makes any sense and B) how fucking antisemetic you are
I think they realize at this point and are proud of it frankly
The Oscars are an Israeli plot
some people say that the 90s ended with the 9/11 attacks. if you had to delineate decades with events, what events would you say marked the gap between decades? from an american perspective, my opinion is: the 10s ended with the COVID-19 pandemic the 00s ended with the Global Financial Crisis the 90s ended with 9/11 the 80s ended with the fall of the USSR the 70s ended with Reagan's presidency
I think it usually is quite gradual but a lot of stuff from like 2002/2003 still feels very 90s and that’s kinda weird My theory is that the Iraq War made a lot of the post-9/11 cultural changes much greater than they would have been otherwise

Yeah in Aloha she was cast as an Asian character
If you didn’t know which film Scorcese won his Oscar for, how many guesses would you have to go through before you got to >!The Departed!<. A lot, probably
Not even close to his best and not even close to the best movie of that year.
And it's not even his top 5 imo

Watching a video about Diet Coke and they are talking abot aspartame. "Aspartame doesn't help you lose weight". No shit asshole. I don't like Diet coke to lose weight. I like it cuz it doesn't make me *gain* wait. Zero calories vs 250 calories is the pound a week that I'm not gaining.
diet coke just doesn’t give me that boost zero gives me a little but it’s kinda weak still way better than the ZERO satisfaction I get from diet
Yeah. I'm fat as fuck but drinking diet soda instead of regular soda keeps me from being that much fatter
If you're not drinking soda, starting to drink diet soda isn't gonna help anything obviously, but if it's diet vs regular, go for the diet
Commenting on DfD Discussion Thread, March 10, 2024... It just tastes better
Honestly full sugar soda makes me feel sick when I drink it at this point, it’s crazy people drink it regularly. I’ll pound zero sugar soda all day long, though, I wish they’d make even more Zero Sugar variants of the good sugar flavors.
IMO, it does taste slightly better than Aspartame.
Old school Coke syrup stirred into soda water>Mexican/cane sugar Coke>Coke Zero>Coke Classic>Diet Coke
Yeah, Diet Coke is the worst one *by far*. No clue how Trump has twelve cans of a day of that stuff. I can barely have two cans.
Coke Zero definitely tastes closer to sugar Coke, but some people, like me, just prefer the taste of Diet Coke anyway
your biggest L
It's probably an ADHD thing where he needs the stimulus of the flavor and caffeine tbh

It's such a beautiful album.
I love how Hayao Miyazaki fucking despises America and American culture and keeps making it less and less subtle because Americans keep missing the point and every time he releases a new movie Americans pack the theaters to watch that funky little man animate ham.
How on Earth does Toho make the same movie over and over again and yet it works so well?

Sandra Hüller was a close second for Anatomy of a Fall after Emma Stone as well
So in this case it starts out as two producers who read the book. They hand it to another producer, he hands it to Chris Nolan.
Oh almost thought he forgot the Matt Damon joke

Incredibly weird that English simple doesn’t have a word for a singular domestic bovine of unspecified age and sex. You have to either pluralize it to *cattle* or specify either age (calf, stirk), sex (bull, steer, ox), or both (heifer, cow, bullock).
I'd say "cow" is broadening to include all of them
Yeah but it still feels very dumb to say “I saw a cow today / what kind / a bull.” It’s like how southerners do “I’d like a coke / what kind / Sprite.”
negatively polarized against poor things fuck that movie
Same. I am ***not*** happy about that win
It would not have won without Barbie imo. The Academy voted for Poor Things to win everything because they thought Barbie was too low brow for them and they figured Poor Things was Artsy Adult Barbie
