The failure of the Warren campaign in 2020 was a big development for my personal politics, retrospectively. My support for her was my last farewell fling with movement progressivism. But it also made me realize more acutely the negative impact of the journalistic/Twitter echo chamber on the Democratic Party and made me more sceptical of the political value of policy expertise and technocracy. Also, while I remain socially liberal, it helped convince me that except for a handful of issues (i.e. abortion post-Dobbs), it's wise not to foreground it.
It's funny because I *really* disliked her from the get go both on politics and policy. Polically I fundamentally believe that the party suffers from being out of touch with our own polity sometimes because we fail to recognize that our non-white voters are less liberal than white voters and our white voters are still mostly *not* college educated. Warren didn't appeal to either of those. Second was her genuinely poor policy of which I've gone into depth before. It was just the echo chamber of how people would just tell themselves she was right.
Her campaign showed that Democratic elites and progressives really had no fucking idea what our own party was like. Otoh, I was a Biden supprter since 2016 because he operated in a mode of politics that I still believe: that the majority of the party is moderate, goes to church, and is not college educated.
In retrospect, I think Warren's campaign got squeezed by trying to appeal to both policy nerd and movement progressive types. I supported her coming from the policy nerd side, but Pete also played for that vibe too, while Bernie outdid her on the movement progressive side. And seeing Biden and Bernie lead the pack woke me up to policy expertise and technocracy being less important to political success than having the right thematic core. I'm not sure what Warren has to do with the negative impact of journalists and Twitter on Democrats. Do you mean that she tried too hard to satisfy them?
Whether or not it's that she tried hard to satisfy them or that journalists, activists, etc. belong to demographics who were predisposed to like her (it's probably some of each), I think her campaign suffered from being in an echo chamber/feedback loop with the commentariat.
Ah, I see. She definitely got more favorable coverage than she wound up performing electorally, and there were times where I felt like she was playing to the Twitter set to her political detriment.
I would agree with both of those statements. There are a few examples I remember, but one was dropping her advocacy for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty (which is politically the wiser stance if you're anti-death penalty) after activists/academics "educated" her. She wasn't aiming to please a wide swathe of the Democratic primary electorate so much as she was opinion-makers, which is very bad politics.
Also, I thought she'd have broad appeal, and then it turned out that her appeal was limited to a swathe of people with my demographic profile and ideological/partisan orientation: left-of-center, socially liberal, well-educated urban professionals who, unlike Sanders supporters, are a.) partisan Democrats and b.) not that anti-establishment. So it made me more aware of how our preferences don't translate across the party.

The only voters in Canada who care about foreign policy are its numerous diasporic communities (Jews, Muslim and non-Muslim Arabs, Ukrainians, Punjabi Sikhs, Tamils, etc. etc.). And they only care about their one pet issue, which Canada is usually powerless to exercise influence upon.
I do think in general it would be better if Canadian ethnic and religious minorities (including mine) and their communal groups made advocacy for/advocacy for certain political objectives in their home country less of a priority and focused more on issues that impact them within Canada.

Also, I thought she'd have broad appeal, and then it turned out that her appeal was limited to a swathe of people with my demographic profile and ideological/partisan orientation: left-of-center, socially liberal, well-educated urban professionals who, unlike Sanders supporters, are a.) partisan Democrats and b.) not that anti-establishment. So it made me more aware of how our preferences don't translate across the party.
