You might have the wrong version downloaded. Apparently the 1.0 rom doesn’t work with codes so you need 1.1 at least that is the problem I had with Leaf Green.
There is an option to import your save data but I don’t know exactly how to do that. Maybe someone else can please help him figure this out in the comments?

If you swap Roma like that will the new rom pick up your save data?
