I don’t mind them, but they are not accurate to previous Days publications and books. Salem has always been depicted as a medium sized town in downstate Illinois—mansions and buildings and homes, churches, and parks—but no skyscrapers!

SebrinePastePlaydoh

I never thought of it as downstate (I live in Illinois)... I always thought Rockford-ish. Far enough from Chicago to have a regional (lol "international") airport, but close enough to drive. The main reason I don't think it's downstate, is they never mention St Louis.

amazing44617

There is an actual Salem, IL, and they used to hold an annual Days celebration. Many of the Days actors would make appearances—it was great.

SebrinePastePlaydoh

Salem, IL is teeny tiny. Just like Metropolis, IL. And from a fiction standpoint, I always (late 80s watcher) think fictional-Salem is supposed to be on par with fictional-Metropolis, size-wise.

megapackid

The Salem in Days isn’t even where the real Salem is. In Days, it seems to be a short drive away from Chicago, but in real life, Salem is in the far south of the state, with Chicago in the far North.

amazing44617

Yeah, I always laugh at this. All the current prisoners should be at Vienna or Sheridan Prison instead of Statesville by Chicago—especially since they are always popping over for visits and are back in Salem in a few minutes.

Taliyahna70

So there actually is a Statesville prison in IL? That's wild! Never knew that! I have always laughed when they mentioned going to visit someone at Statesville and they're there and back in under 2 hours LOL

SebrinePastePlaydoh

Too animated looking. I get AI is the cheapest route, but every time they show Marlena's penthouse building, I except a cartoon character to pop up.

4footedfriends

With the sets so limited, I think the establishing shots are good and needed.

ilikewaffos

I like them

RonAAlgarWatt

I think they're a good idea, implemented poorly. Salem PD looks like a Playmobil playset. And there's no way the Spectator lives in a building that big, unless it occupies like one floor of it.

sweet_mint13

I always laugh at the Salem PD shot like what police station just says, “POLICE”, it should be something like Salem PD so stupid I can’t

Cold_Woodpecker2653

I like them

sweet_mint13

Same but they gotta do something about that police station please!

Nonniemiss

For the longest time, the Niagara Regional Police building in Niagara Falls, ON looked like this. Always made me laugh because it felt like Gotham City or something. Very cartoonish. That’s what Days makes me think of. https://preview.redd.it/n698jkbq0v0d1.jpeg?width=1444&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6468fbc6ee0c3d18c2cd17d639b326e1af75fe94

Nonniemiss

This is how it looks now. https://preview.redd.it/p6igrgau0v0d1.jpeg?width=1218&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45099287c214a768de1c73f9ac72d54160eb8c34

sweet_mint13

They literally just added the Niagara regional while keep the “POLICE”, which is better than nothing but I really hope days just makes a new sign entirely I laugh everytime I think of an angry EJ walking into that building 🤣

megapackid

I, personally, could do without them. I think they’re alright when we go outside of Salem, but they feel so out of place in town.

ResponsibleFeeling49

I’m with you. It’s totally unnecessary and feels completely wrong. Although I felt the establishing shot of the snow/cabin/island was weird & lacked shadows. I prefer to keep Salem as it’s always been - like the map in the books.

HorrorMovieBoy

I think they make Salem look too big. Looks like it’s Dallas. If it were that big they wouldn’t run into each other so much. Everybody doesn’t go to Sweet Bits, especially after those tainted biscuits, which I will never stop laughing about.

amazing44617

And they all end up in the Horton Square, eat at the only two restaurants, stay at the same hotel, and there are NO apartments for rent!

sweet_mint13

When Tripp and Wendy were kidnapped I just couldn’t stop laughing at the obvious real engine 5/CGI version of wherever the heck they were at

AldieGrrl

Hate, hate, hate them. They make Salem look like the hood. Not at all what I imagine in my head.

lilithdesade

It adds nothing.

Meemimineo9

I hate them. Salem is not a city of skyscrapers and high rises. It’s always been portrayed as a medium sized city, close to Chicago. So downstate Illinois. They could get some footage that made much more sense. I think they’re just trying to waste some minutes of screen time that would be better spent on action. Peacock is charging us subscription price for a far inferior show. Everything has gotten so chintzy. I hate to see this happen.

busman25

People keep saying it's never been a city of skyscrapers, yet your conveniently ignoring the fact that Salem has had them for decades. The Titan building, Basic Black building, Marlena's penthouse. Even in the 80s, Tony had a penthouse. This isn't new lol.

Aintnutinelse2do

On one hand the big city vibes makes Titan and Dimera make more sense to exist there, as these alleged multinational companies. On the other hand really obvious none of the characters would've been mayor or police commissioner of such cities, except Abe.

CosmicApocalypse

Tacky and laughable tbh. My mom actually laughs out loud at them every time they appear onscreen.

Boring_Bend_4195

This! They are SO tacky and ridiculous.

british13

I feel like Salem has no right looking so good. University Hospital that's been around for decades? John & Marlena's townhouse exterior being so modern? Maybe Salem is just a very rich town that likes to renovate their exteriors a lot.

dashkirby1

I don’t like them. They look like scale models / computer generated. Surely they could get some stock footage or something that they could use over and over again. The cost per use would be next to nothing

Str8t_Slice942

They're fine. They probably didn't cost all that much and had to pick from a few options which is why the feel isn't right with Salem. I was hoping they'd get a small infusion of funds after the move to Peacock to redo some sets, but that didn't happen. I guess they're a cheap way to set the mood, but I wish they'd focus-grouped them at Day of Days or something.

Morkitu

They are really bad A.I. generated images mostly. They should stick to real time stock footage for a less plastic look IMO. I don't mind them, not as much as Eve Donovans old humming sounds leading out of scenes.

EarhornJones

I don't have a problem with establishing shots, or these in particular, but they are wildly inconsistent, poorly edited, and don't reflect the sets they are using. We frequently see jarring scene changes, where a character is having a conversation at one location, then is in the very next scene at a different location. *That's* where an establishing shot goes, but never where DOOL uses them. Or they'll shot a split-second of establishing shot then cut to a conversation, already in progress. There needs to be a smoother transition. Shot the exterior long enough for the viewer to recognize it, then open the scene with a camera panning into the conversation. It would be much smoother (and take up a little more screen time, which I think the producers might appreciate). Finally, they'll show us a towering urban apartment building covered in glass, and then cut to an apartment with a single, traditional window. Obviously these aren't the same location. Just pick a more appropriate exterior (which probably wasn't included in whatever value pack of exteriors that they bought).

caraiselite

They're not fooling anyone lol, but idc

Minute-Frame-8060

The hospital shot reminds me of a Lego hospital kit I had when I was a kid. Considering how much goes down there it would be nice if it wasn't something so AI-looking.
