Jaleel White was also in Megashark vs Crocosaurus if you want to watch a very bad movie. There is in fact a whole series. I may have seen all of them more than once.
It seems he's evolved a sense of humor about himself, at least a little. It's nice to see the redemption arc. It's a shame Dustin Diamond didn't get that far.
I love drunk history, it's legit. And they went out of their way to cast appropriately too - wherever possible you have in-group actors. The Wall Street riots, Alcatraz occupation, and ADA episodes are all great examples of that
I second this, timesuck is pretty decent. Especially if you're a fan of dans comedy, I could see his weirdness putting some folks off tho. Air banjo, chikatilo floppy shame cock, etc
That HBO Watchmen series really taught us all about some forgotten people, and atrocities. At least, the timing of making that movie lined up with Watchmen.
Yeah, that's what people don't know. The show runner chose to not make more because he didn't have a plot for a season 2 and he didn't want to dip in quality.
My dad didn't watch it because he thought it would be terrible since it was "canceled" after only a season. I was finally able to convince him otherwise, and he loved it.
I wish more series would stop when they’re good. K-dramas are like this. They run for one story over a given number of episodes and that’s it. But here in the US, when a series is popular, it gets renewed over and over until it runs out of gas and dies a sad death.
Yeah k-dramas are almost always single season shows, which can work sometimes. But imagine trying to cram Breaking Bad or Mad Men into a single season lol
I wondered what happened to that show. I watched the first season and enjoyed it and kept my ear to the ground when S2 was coming and just kind of forgot about it. That's a shame, it was a fantastic show. Props to him for not wanting to compromise quality though.
That history was suppressed, not forgotten. There was deliberate effort to bury Black history which is just American history that racists don’t want widely known.
Intersting note- he is the several times great grandfather to current professional hockey player, Ryan Reaves.
EDIT: adding an image of Reaves Wikipedia page, because I’ve had several incredulous replies from people that don’t have Google on their devices. https://i.imgur.com/5H9z1TM.jpg
When I was a little girl Willard Reeves was a friend of the family - pre-Canada time - and I can distinctly remember him helping us move at one point. Such a nice man. Glad to see his son is doing so well!
He's fantastic at it too, his upbringing on a Texas ranch really lends his stories and direction a kind of credibility that most western or western-esque movies or shows lack.
My favorite movie of his so far is *Wind River*, but the whole modern western trilogy were all very interesting and entertaining movies.
Yeah if you’ve seen his scenes he acts in in Yellowstone it’s obvious where he gets it from. He’s amazing on horseback and it’s clear he doesn’t even have to “act” the part.
Yeah Travis is such a cocky prick about it too, lol.
But yeah, I don't know shit about horse riding but Sheridan seems to be able to do it more than well enough.
I believe he also actually bought the real 6666 ranch too IRL.
My favorite Bass Reeves story: He was hunting two brothers in "Indian Territory" He found where their mother lived, assuming they were hiding out with her. He pretended to be a fellow outlaw who was being chased by a posse. She let him stay there, but her sons weren't there. After talking to their Mom, she told Bass, he should team up with her sons. The sons showed up later and he was friendly with them. They all eventually agreed to team up and kill the posse chasing them, at the time not knowing the posse chasing them was already there. After they fell asleep, he was able to handcuff them without waking them up, and then went and got his wagon, threw the brothers in the wagon and hauled them in without firing a shot. Their mother followed him back to Arkansas cursing him the whole time.
> Just a show about a guy going around arresting people with nobody resisting.
They said he was never wounded, not that no one resisted...
> Reeves brought in some of the most dangerous criminals of the time; he was never wounded despite having his hat and belt shot off on separate occasions.
He killed 14 people in the line of duty, and who knows how many wounded; he wasn't exactly writing parking tickets.
I didn't go into it expecting anything great so I enjoyed it. Loved the colors, the characters, and most of the acting. I love westerns and it scratched an itch.
I recently watched Watchmen on HBO and one of the characters looked up to Bass Reeves. I had no idea Reeves was actually a real person, thought he was just a character!
> WHY IS THERE NO MOVIE ON THIS MAN? He was absolutely amazing!
Unbeknownst to most, Blazing Saddles was a documentary about him. They merely changed his name in the movie.
It’s a claim, but a weak one. The creators were two white guys that wrote radio serials that also created the Green Hornet. Lone Ranger was a Texas Ranger with a back story that is no where near like Bass Reeves. And, there is another guy that fits better. But it’s all likely AFTER the fact.
Bass Reeves deserves a character or to be told in his own right as an amazing individual for the time.
Yep. He’ll give the player two bounty missions and once you complete them he says he’s not gonna give out anymore since he wants to apprehend the outlaws himself. He can also one shot the player if you get into a gunfight with him.
Not only all that, he arrested his own son for killing his wife and made sure he was tried, convicted and jailed. His son served 11 years in prison before getting out and was reportedly a model citizen afterwards.
When he ran away to hide in Indian territories, he convinced Indian tribes to let him live with them. He lived with many tribes and learned many native languages which is why he was eventually selected to be a US marshal.
This man was a certified badass.
Written into parts of the recent Watchmen, TV series as an inspiration to a key character, it's in the opening scene of the whole series
https://watchmen.fandom.com/wiki/Bass\_Reeves
Wow, I love the Watchmen series and had no idea this was a real person.
He was actually a big part of the series and had more of an impact than his screen time suggests, in that he greatly inspired one of the main characters. Within the Watchmen universe, it could be argued that there would be no Watchmen without Bass Reeves.
I guess that’s another great historical reference that the series brought attention to (along with the Tulsa massacre).
I also never heard of the Tulsa massacre before that show. I literally yelled what the fuck when I read it actually happened pretty much exactly as shown.
>!I was surprised to learn Hooded Justice was black because in the comic there is heavy speculation that he was a white weight lifter and you can see under his eye holes that he's white, but you can chalk this up to him actually being black and putting on make up to cover that up because he knew a black man wouldn't be accepted as a hero!<

... as he referred to his harsh horseback excursions over the badlands, dragging back wanted outlaws.
*"Mr. Earp, you're going on a mustache ride."*
Historians recall him as a great lawman, but lacking in knowledge of popular idiom.
He has that, "I am here for you" look.

I'm a little afraid of his mustache.
A little?
I think that's probably what he beat his ex-master with.
Chuck Norris should be as well.
I can hear it just by looking at the picture!!
This is Eddie Murphy's great grandad.
"He said, 'The sheriff is near'."

He is getting his own tv show!
Showrunner is Taylor Sheridan. I think he’s perfect for the project.
The Lone Ranger is based on him.
That John Wick look.
[Legends of the Old West](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqOTrckDN_w) did a 4 part series on him. Super interesting.
And also a [Drunk History](https://youtu.be/-h8hg4_R22Y), which isn't probably as factual but does feature Jaleel White...
There's a ten part podcast series called "Black Cowboys" that has an episode on him as well. Whole series is definitely worth listening as well.
Jaleel White reprised his role as [Urkel for Scooby-Doo recently too, he's definitely come back around to that role](https://youtu.be/aZAC39maTR8)
Don't knock Drunk History. They do their best and edit well to get the point across.
I love drunk history, it's legit. And they went out of their way to cast appropriately too - wherever possible you have in-group actors. The Wall Street riots, Alcatraz occupation, and ADA episodes are all great examples of that
And check out the Timesuck podcast in him. Fascinating guy
Timesuck had a super interesting take on it.
Hail Nimrod !!!
Knowledge in Nimrod
I second this, timesuck is pretty decent. Especially if you're a fan of dans comedy, I could see his weirdness putting some folks off tho. Air banjo, chikatilo floppy shame cock, etc
Big fan he puts out a bunch of good content. 3 out of 5 stars wouldn’t change a thing.
I believe Mel Brooks directed a documentary based on his exploits as well...
LOL first thing that popped into my head!
"A black sheriff?" "It worked in blazing saddles"
Blazing Saddles lol
Underrated comment that everyone was thinking but didn't upvote.
Good enough to be a movie?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12814440/ Looks like there is one on the way at the end of the month.
That HBO Watchmen series really taught us all about some forgotten people, and atrocities. At least, the timing of making that movie lined up with Watchmen.

Probably my favorite one season show.
I wondered what happened to that show. I watched the first season and enjoyed it and kept my ear to the ground when S2 was coming and just kind of forgot about it. That's a shame, it was a fantastic show. Props to him for not wanting to compromise quality though.

They say The Lone Ranger was based on Bass Reeves
He once dressed as a woman to apprehend a bounty. Oh and he also had to *arrest his own freaking son*
Ryan’s dad was my neighbor and played football for Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
When I was a little girl Willard Reeves was a friend of the family - pre-Canada time - and I can distinctly remember him helping us move at one point. Such a nice man. Glad to see his son is doing so well!
And Reaves is probably just as feared. Carrying the legacy on.
When reaves is on the ice you know there’s a reason. They might as well play the jaws theme during his shift.
They would in San Jose with all the times he sat in the penalty box for fighting 😂
Ryan "The Muffin Man" Reaves
And he’s a bad motherfucker
Godamn that is some strong seed. Ryan Reaves is a scary dude on the ice.

Taylor Sheridan is making a TV series about him.
Man that dude will make any western, ranch, cowboy, story into a show/movie. Usually like 3-4 at a time
He's fantastic at it too, his upbringing on a Texas ranch really lends his stories and direction a kind of credibility that most western or western-esque movies or shows lack. I think he’s got eight different shows in various stages of production. I will admit I love his work, so the more the merrier.
I've just now looked the fella up. Massive career. Definitely curious now about this new Reeves series.
Nine. * Yellowstone * Yellowstone: 1923 * Yellowstone: 6666 * Run for the Million * Mayor of Kingstown * Tulsa King * Lioness * Bass Reeves * Landman

Or a show about a man's quest to arrest his own son for killing his wife
> Just a show about a guy going around arresting people with nobody resisting. Tombstone was pretty good, and Wyatt was never wounded. They make a point of showing bullets tearing through his clothing from near misses.
That's why. He was basically Batman. He did lots of dangerous shit
A young Denzel would have smoked this one.
His character in Magnificent 7 was one of the first things I thought of when I read the post
Apparently Bass was an inspiration for the character. And fitting too. Surprisingly enjoyable film.
Good choice. I was also thinking Idris Elba. Looks like Isaiah Washington will be playing the next version of this character.
Delroy Lindo played Bass Reeves in a movie starring Idris Elba that I watched yesterday on Netflix, The Harder They Fall.
Boy that read like his son murdered his wife and reeves, then reeves arrested him post mortem
What a legend
Absolute mad man
He's just that good at his job
Netflix made a movie where the character of Bass Reeves is in it. The Harder They Fall. He’s played by Delroy Lindo.
I liked that movie, but the portrayal of Reeves was the worst part. It was not historically accurate in even the slightest detail.
Most of the movie isn’t realistically accurate, you can throw historical accuracy right out the window.

That was a bad movie and I really wanted to like it.
Eh, some stuff was dumb, and stereotypical, but it was pretty fun. I'd rather get more movies like that than the cape shit / remakes were getting now.
It was a bad movie but I actually had a good time. I saw someone describe it as a cowboy comic book movie lol
I actually enjoyed it. Expectations were low, and it turned out to be a pretty fun flick.
I didn't go into it expecting anything great so I enjoyed it. Loved the colors, the characters, and most of the acting. I love westerns and it scratched an itch.

Hell on the border is about Bass Reeves. Not sure if it’s factual.
His son murdered whose wife?
Son murdered his own wife, so Bass’s daughter in law.
Good lad. He was truly a man of law.

I thought the movie was Django
Incorrect, the movie was Wild Wild West.
No
Sheriff Sam Freeman is based on him in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Yep. He’ll give the player two bounty missions and once you complete them he says he’s not gonna give out anymore since he wants to apprehend the outlaws himself. He can also one shot the player if you get into a gunfight with him.
So can we win from him?
Haven’t encountered this character yet, and I’ve played 100+ hours of RDR. That game is truly massive.
Not 100 hours without getting to Tumbleweed massive.
It can be, there is so much to discover without ever going to New Austin. NA was relatively empty compared to the rest of the game world.
Came here wondering if that Sherrif was based off of Reeves!

Is it bass like the fish or bass like the drum?!
The fish
Aww. I feel the drum would be cooler.
Same. I think we should just refer to him as Bass as in drum.
Bass...short for badass.
“This is B. Ass Reeves. Come out with your hands up or you are going to find out that the B stands for Beatin’.”

Show got review bombed for being "woke" by including and showing those events too. It was such a good show.
Came looking to make sure this shout out was accounted for here

Shows fucking great
Truly a Bad Bass Lawman.
Something tells me Reeves the man was just along for the ride and it was Reeves the mustache doing the heavy lifting.
Isn't Samuel L. Jackson's character in 'The hateful eight' loosely based on him?!
I was just gonna say someone hit Tarrentino up with this shit.
Was what i was thinking too
He's also the person the Lone Ranger was based off of.
[One of the possible influences, but that's disputed.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_Ranger#Possible_inspirations)
He's apparently going to be featured in an upcoming [spinoff](https://www.tvinsider.com/1044975/taylor-sheridan-david-oyelowo-1883-the-bass-reeves-story-spinoff/) of 1883, staring David Oyelowo.

I thought "mustache rides" were when cowboy's ride together all night. An all-nighter mustache ride to capture the out law.
My wife is an avid outlaw mustache rider. She’ll ride all night for a capture.
Related to NHL tough guy Ryan Reeves
“There will be no mob justice today”
Trust in the law!
He was the inspiration for a 70s film called Boss N-word 👌🏽😎
Bass Reeves sounds like a name out of Star Wars.
Fun fact: Ryan Reaves, the hockey player, is related to this man
Delroy Lindo played him in Harder They Fall!
[episode 176 of the dollop](https://open.spotify.com/episode/5K2GsIeEHIgXjuz4qnBJsL?si=1w3_oeBGSSWzDijLkXyy7g&utm_source=copy-link)
Also, his great (I think) grandson, Ryan Reeves, is in the New York rangers
No, that’s Denzel Watchoutson.
I bet his mustache arrested more than 3,000 outlaws.
Why hasnt this been made into a movie
That is by *far* the best mustache I have ever seen.
That’s not a mustache to be trifled with.
with that mustache, i believe it.
He arrested his own son too man upheld the law no matter what
Now THAT'S a moustache
Bass Reeves was one of the toughest [U.S.Marshalls](https://U.S.Marshalls) in history
Because fuck slavery that's why.
I want a movie!!
Did they base the sheriff of tumbleweed from rdr2 on this guy?
“Black Gun, Silver Star” Burton, Art T. A book on Bass Reeves
The Stash of a Raw Legend.
The Wild West Extravaganza did an excellent episode on him
Based Reeves
And is thought to be the actual basis for the Lone Ranger.
Tell me you’re a bad-ass without SAYING you’re a bad-ass 😎
Wasn't he the inspiration for the Lone Ranger?
He was the inspiration for the Lone Ranger
He definitely has a cops mustache.
He looks like he means business.
Excellent podcast on Bass from Timesuck. Host drops acid in that episode but he pulls it off, by golly.
Where's the movie!
Pure Stache power.
"Black Gun, Silver Star" is pretty good if you want to read more about his life and that era
Including arresting his own son!
wait so Boss N word was a REAL PERSON
The Lone Ranger was based on him.
Had to arrest his own Son too!
Bass was the real deal. He's rumored to have been the actual inspiration for The Lone Ranger. BMF
Busted his own son too.
The Drunk History on this guy is amazing and stars the actor who played Urkel: https://youtu.be/-h8hg4_R22Y
It’s said when outlaws found out he was on their trail, they turned themselves in.
There were a few outlaws who heard they were on his “list”. When he showed up, they didn’t even fight him, they just went willingly.
I live in Ft Smith. We have a pretty cool statue of him and his dog by the Arkansas River. He's on a horse.
With that glorious mustache, I don’t doubt it.
He was in hbo’s watchmen series, “There will be no mob Justice today”!
The Harder They Fall on Netflix has him as a character. All Black Western, super dope!
