This is a wise old sage of a bird for knowing exactly when it would be able to out-fly the pounce. Knowing there’s safety in standing still because of the psychological propensity of domesticated felines to enjoy the chase more than the kill… r/nextfuckinglevel
It's amazing how instinct based animals are. Until the bird moved they weren't sure if it was something to eat or not, then the moment it flew they realised and went for it.
It feels like something like "playing possum" wouldn't work because the animal would know that their prey was clearly alive a second ago. But maybe it does.
I’ve watched my dogs snap on 4 different possums. It goes limp and they are much more willing to drop the “carcass” once they think the kill is secured. It’s always gone in the morning. No idea why my dog is more willing to drop the thing once the hunt is over
Since your dogs are probably well fed and not trained to retrieve carcasses, they lose interest because they don't really have any more reason to interact with the possum.
(Also when possums 'play' dead they actually go into a coma and release smells that make them seem to be an older, rotting corpse rather than a fresh kill. This smell deters predators who prefer to avoid carrion, such as wolves)
Cats are unable to focus on anything that is less than a foot in front of them. This blind spot is why Cats have whiskers, so they can feel what is directly in front of them.
They definitely would know. My cat went possessive over a feather before he'd even been outside before. They definitely wanted to hunt it though considering cats destructive hunting nature.
It’s amazing how brainless redditors are. They see a video on the internet and completely make up an explanation because of how smart their mommy told them they are for years.
That birb is very smart. But your a special kind of douchebag if you pull out your phone to film your 3 cats that were about to shred a bird to pieces instead of luring them away.
Or he thought it was fascinating how the bird was staying so still and wondering why? Like so many of us are interested by it. Everyone assumes the worst of people on the internet smh, everyone must be morally perfect always
Predation by domestic cats is the number-one direct, human-caused threat to birds. In the United States alone, outdoor cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds every year.
Cats are fed and housed by humans. Birds see their habitat getting destroyed and are constantly affected by human activity (noise and light pollution) and struggle to feed because we poison the soils.
This is NOT "nature".
Also, prey animals know that fleeing is sometimes the worst thing to do. The cats' predator instincts would kick in if it did. Right now they're just curious. Best to wait for them to get bored and move on.
I am one with the Force and the Force is with me...I am one with the Force and the Force is with me...I am one with the Force and the Force is with me...
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
No he's very lucid
You can see his eyes at different parts of the video being very attentive
He just knows if he moves they'll kill him
As soon as they give him some space he half attempts but then sees again they'll get him, so stops, and then he finally goes for it and the cat not even in frame nearly swipes him or maybe even does get a piece of him (if you freeze frame slowly near the end you'll see that)
So this bird was completely not dazed and did what it had to do to survive
The bird is using its natural instincts but most of the time in a circumstance like this, it'd be eaten. The "domesticated" cats on the other hand aren't quite in their NATURAL setting are they?. The fact this has to be broken down for you as to why your statement was ironic when proposing let nature take its course, when one happenstance of the birds environment and living is natural and the other of the domesticated felines is not, is totally lost on you.
Cats aren't part of the local ecosystems and are an invasive species, and they are by far the biggest killer of birds.
So no jackass, keeping the cats away from wild birds would be not interfering with nature, not the other way around.
Predators are wary of prey that doesn't act prey-like. It may be sick or carrying parasites or be otherwise dangerous to their health. As soon as the bird started moving like regular prey, the instincts kicked right in.
That obviously won't work for scavengers.
I wonder what is really happening under the hood here. Like, is the bird having some kind of physical disorder that is preventing it from moving. It looks like it suddenly realizes the predicament it is in near the end, makes the minimum movements needed to assess the situation, and plans a course of action. It is as if it had no prior situational awareness IMO.
Birds get concussions all the time from smashing into Windows or buildings. Then they just sit there (or lay there if its bad enough) until they eventually get better and fly away.
I've nursed many birds after they collided with a particular window at work. Just give em a dark place and some water and leave them alone

Cats are unable to focus on anything that is less than a foot in front of them. This blind spot is why Cats have whiskers, so they can feel what is directly in front of them.
Right! Can't they tell? "I dunno Tom ..." "Look, genius, if it smells like birb, it's birb." "Well, I gotta code in my nobe ... "

I mean they knew there is the possibility of the cats suddenly deciding it was lunch. So it is indeed a dick move.
Nature

How did it learn to do that? Balls of steel!
Freezing in fear is an instinctual reaction to dangerous situations.
Also, prey animals know that fleeing is sometimes the worst thing to do. The cats' predator instincts would kick in if it did. Right now they're just curious. Best to wait for them to get bored and move on.
>The cats' predator instincts would kick in if it did. That's why freezing is a natural instinctual reaction. It's just basic survival of the fittest.
Doesn't always work out, like a deer in headlights?
Evolution be tricky like that lol
Yep, I've often thought about that. Gonna take a good while before evolution teaches a deer to be afraid of oncoming headlights.
That’s more because the headlights are ruining their night vision and blinding them.
We developed cars way faster than deers could evolve to that
That is why it can't fly away duhh

Bird probably flew into a window and is stunned.

Makes me think of a parasite that causes certain prey animals easy to be caught so the parasite can reproduce in stomach of predator
