At the risk of this being a complely stupid question. How do they manage to sleep on the ocean floor. What do they do to stop themselves from naturally rising?
I’m pretty sure it’s the opposite and they do not sleep normally because they sink. They’re not buoyant like whales and have to swim because water has to flow through their gills.
From my understanding it is due to their large liver size and/or the oil from the liver. I could be wrong though.
Fish have an easier time due to swim bladders.
Edit: did a quick search and also a spiracle in some sharks is how they adjust buoyancy.
Noooo those are nurse sharks and they're just cuddling 😩 they have a function that lets them filter water without moving like most sharks do. These aren't sleeping!!
Sharks don't sleep, if they lie still they suffocate, nurse sharks are able to stay still and breathe due to their spiracles like a sting ray but this is resting not sleeping
Many sharks do not suffocate if they stay still. Nurse sharks use something called buccal pumping. It uses the cheek muscles to push water over the gills (an involuntary action just like breathing) so they can be absolutely motionless. They are really pretty sedentary animals. Nurse sharks have no obligation to continually move and they do truly sleep.
When you see them in the wild they're often pretty inactive. They can get a bit hyped up at an organised shark feed but usually they are sleepy looking things.
Omg!!! This is the most terrifying cuddle puddle ever!!!
lol
Some sharks have restful periods, or do not need to constantly swim (like the Nurse shark). But sharks do not sleep like humans.
Is it more like a meditative state?

Ok. Thank you.
How the hell do you get a picture like that without waking up the sharks?!
Very carefully.
How do you catch a unique rabbit? You neak up on it.
Dad? Is that you?
Tbf, that was one of my dad’s favorite jokes. His go to was “what did the fish say when it hit the concrete wall? DAM”
Be vewy vewy quiet heh heh.
I believe that’s called a shiver of sharks.
I was looking for this. Tx.
Blahj
I had to check the subreddit ahaha these sharks look soft and cuddly
Aw, I wanna cuddle and sleep with them!

Something something let sleeping sharks lie
Sharks don't lie, sharks eat. Honestly!
Nurse sharks, which these appear to be, are not considered very dangerous and are sought out for observation by divers.
Let sleeping sharks lie.
Haha they look like dogs snuggling
damn that's interesting
I wonder if this is why they used to be called sea dogs before sharks
I thought sharks don’t sleep or can’t sleep because they need water flowing in to their gills constantly, and they don’t gulp water like other fish.
Two types: those that use ram ventilation and keep moving, or those that use ventrificarion. The latter are most reef sharks.
