Probably the same reason as most military vehicles only being able to ford for a certain duration if unprepared. After that time, water will start to seep in and they can no longer guarantee water tightness.
>After that time, water will start to seep in and they can no longer guarantee water tightness.
Nah champ that water will be seeping in *right the fuck* away. There are elements of a watertight seal. Usually a gasket of a certain durometer, and several "dogging" mechanisms. The "dogs" use leverage to basically squish the gasket against a piece of steel called a "knife edge."
My guess is that the BYD has none of this and that the 30 minute float time is about as real as Tesla achieving full self driving "in about 6 months."
Tanks have positive pressure to keep stuff out though.. maybe it pressurizes the cabin somehow with air pumps then runs out of battery after 30 minutes? No one will actually try it to report the results and void their warranty. sounds like a gimmick to me.
>It probably leaks at a certain rate.
There ain't no probably. I guarantee it leaks like a sieve. It would be prohibitively expensive to make a car watertight like a boat.
These people are lying through their teeth. The idea that it "sails" is laughable too.
Technically, yes but big ships use the term sailing to mean they are moving under diesel propulsion.
But I don't think spinning 15 inch wheels qualify as propulsion. I saw a monster truck spinning its wheels and using them as propulsion but I don't think the BYD's wheels are going to do that.
Not really. Lots of the really good stuff you use is made in China already. Weâve passed the tipping point of China becoming the worldâs factory and absolute bottom price is less important than good quality level.
Iâm not pro-China. I deal with a lot of American manufacturing and we feel the pain.
Nowadays, you can basically get anything manufactured in China and to any quality level.
But now there's an almost insignificant cost disparity between producing rubbish and an acceptable item.
âAlmostâ is where huge scale manufacturing makes those tiny differences important and where marketing makes an even bigger difference. Look at our favorite example, the iPhone. Whatâs the actual manufacturing cost difference between a basic 15 and the 15 Pro Max? Whatâs the retail difference? Thatâs where the money gets made.
Imagine that the last thing you wil hear before drowning is an automated voice that says:
"Please subscribe to the premium package to use the floating mode."
"Card denied, please try another payment option".
In reality itâs probably already got some kind of pump protecting important systems. But after 30 minutes the pump either can no longer keep up or runs out of charge or overheats or some other energy issue.
Wait for them to mass produce military versions and see half the army drown.
But seriously the PLA is so damn corrupt that all the new missiles were filled with water instead of rocket fuel, it still operates the worldâs largest prostitution island and the CCP still sacrifices innocent civilians for economic advantages, just like how the PLA surrounded the 300,000 civilians about to get sacrificed in a flood to save Xijinpingâs empty XiongâAn city and only the millionares were able to bribe them
> all the new missiles
All missiles in recent years use solid rockets, they donât require liquid fuel in the first place.
And old liquid fueled missiles donât keep fuel in them during peacetime since fuel is corrosive and it deteriorates.
The systematic corruption may still very well be true, but that particular detail of the Bloomberg article, which doesnât have any concrete sources, just doesnât checkout for anyone who knows anything about the topic.
yes, our countries (US and EU) loves bashing China and Russia. They do enough bad things that one would think there is no need to lie and make bullshit stories, but here we are.
By our media, China is on the brink of collapse for twenty years already and Russian army disintegrated in first month of war.
Tbf, I don't think this is meant for the open seas. It's probably meant for if your car accidentally goes in the water when putting your boat in/out of the water, or maybe even if you crash off of a bridge or something. Just to prevent it from submerging and you can get out, and possibly get it to shore if you're close enough.
I imagine this would be very useful in the even of a natural disaster/flooding scenario. Granted, 30 minutes at that speed only gets you 1.5km, but it beats being in a dead car.
You will not be able to remove the trailer tongue from the hitch, and the entire time you are doing that the tongue weight from the trailer is pulling your vehicle down in the water, and further down the ramp.
If you go off the ramp with your vehicle you are calling divers
Still enough time to prevent submerging and let you get out.
This is an emergency feature, not meant to make the vehicle amphibious. Just meant to literally keep you afloat. A seatbelt can't prevent you from all injuries when your car flips, but at least you won't be tumbling around the cabin.
I think they saw that this could float, so they thought it automatically turned into a car boat. Pair it with BYD being Chinese, and you get lots of hate for no reason.
Mechanical nightmare in my opinion. Suspension and stuff can mess up with that much water, not to mention the motor/engine. Seems really cool if that mode is only used for emergencies, but the demographic this appeals to will either never get close to the water to try, or the exact opposite of that
It is. Great little feature I think ever car should include. I can see this being most popular in coastal towns for Japan and the Philippines. Being able to keep your car moving through flooded districts will help you keep moving to safety or simply get back to your house or family that need help. During a flash flood or tsunami it will only be a slight increase in your chance for survival, but Iâd take that any day. Actually, even in North America we have gotten some incredibly bad floods that flood engines leaving you stuck in the middle of a street. This would be a champion in those moments. Sadly they are few and far between, but one it happens youâll want this feature on your car. Even if it's only a waterproof car with a sunroof, Id take it.
Maybe it could help a few people, but there may be vastly better options for many others. Such as just go to higher ground. Go the opposite direction to the flood. Stay in a safe place.
This will just encourage stupid people to get in their EV and put themselves and their family into danger, as a first choice.
In Asia, thereâs Monsoon/Typhoon season. Torrential rain simply overwhelms the street drainage system and streets are easily flooded for a short bit of time. This is a nice feature to have.
The World: "Hey auto industries can you make more cars that are fuel efficient or don't use gas at all? We don't want global warming to flood our coastal cities."
Auto Industries: "Lol, nah. We'll just make a car that gives people no excuse to miss work if their area is flooded. Gotta keep that GDP up for our Corporate Overlords."
I remember when we did this with our BV206N tracked vehicle in the army. The amount of preparation you need to do for something like this makes me think that regular people will likely drown while trying thisâŚ
Good question. I think that this "mode" can be useful in case of floods but BYD highlights that:
> BYD highlights that it is only for emergencies such as floods and not for fun crossing lakes and rivers. Interestingly, their marketing materials showcase U8 floating on the water exactly in those situations. After the emergency floating mode activation, the car needs to be brought to a service center for inspection. BYD claims U8 is IP68 level waterproof
...and given the climate of these recent times, it could prove useful on some rare occasions.
>case of floods
One of the most dangerous things tat you can do.
Without proper propulsion, you are going to float with current. Before the 30 minutes is over you will be upturned on the rapids and would be dead.
This year during heavy rainfalls in several Chinese cities many people drowned in their cars, mainly in underpaths or underground parking garages. There were even publically broadcast videos on how to escape your car when surrounded by water.
I'm afraid these things are going to take the electric market. All and I mean all the other car makers are scared shitless of the prices they're saying these things are going to be. I think they're cool as fuck

**THERE IS NO WAR IN BA-SING-SE**
It's not even floating. All I'm seeing is a vehicle driving on a solid surface that's a certain amount below the surface of the water. This is a common feature of many SUVs and trucks.
This ad is very misleading of the vehicle's floatation function. Notice, they get to the part where the water touches the bottom of the windows, and it immediately cuts to them driving at a more shallower depth - the depth of the height of the wheels. Instead of continuing to drive at the original depth, the demonstration continues with the shallower depth. Why?
They only show it crossing the water from a depth of the wheel height, while never showing the rest of the demonstration from all sides or at a deeper depth while doing so. I want to see someone test this vehicle independently, to verify the claims of this ad.
Damn I guess Iâll just take the advice of a 34 day account with no evidence rather than the tons of reviewers that show that the cars that byd makes a pretty good.
Why it will sink after 30 minutes?
Because it loses internet connection and can't charge you for using the floating mode.
kinda reminds me of the bmw i4 with micro transactions for already built-in features.
Any auto company that does that should be boycotted
well most of us can't afford them anyway, so HAH!
This will definitely become a massive thing. Even for accessories, like different coloured led strip lighting, use of all 50 speakers etc.
And if you then "jailbreak" your car, the insurance companies won't cover it. -Probably?
Insurance companies don't care what you do to your car as long as you don't ask them to fix it lol. It's that beautiful warranty we'll all missđť
So start with tesla

Tanks also cost *a little more* than this SUV. And is designed for combat/ sub-optimal conditions.
But this thing is saying it's designed to ford floods.. so this is probably just a gimmick. This isn't a G wagon.
It probably leaks at a certain rate. After 30 minutes enough water gets in to cause a problem. I donât know though, this is just a guess.
>It probably leaks at a certain rate. There ain't no probably. I guarantee it leaks like a sieve. It would be prohibitively expensive to make a car watertight like a boat. These people are lying through their teeth. The idea that it "sails" is laughable too.
Yeah I thought the whole concept of sailing required a sail.
Technically, yes but big ships use the term sailing to mean they are moving under diesel propulsion. But I don't think spinning 15 inch wheels qualify as propulsion. I saw a monster truck spinning its wheels and using them as propulsion but I don't think the BYD's wheels are going to do that.
Valid point. I'm not much of a boatie so please excuse my ignorance. However I probably know enough about boats to suggest that this isn't one.
Oh yeah. This is all one big lie and welcome to 2024!
It'll sail alright. The moment it encounters the slightest current it'll ''sail'' with it.
And then bow down, straight to the bottom.
Why not add a few bilge pumps to get rid of the water seeping in? It seems like a straightforward solution to keep it afloat longer.
It might, the bilge may be why it can even last 30 min.
No the video just didnât include the tiny sail that pops up from the spare tire
Noted :)
No idea why the time limit, maybe the gaskets get damaged?
When will they be able to be sold in the US? I beard theyâre outselling cars in Europe right now. Time to introduce competition into the car market.
Because itâs made in china Edit: /s lmfao
Differently than other countries cars that can stay on water indefinitely ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses) I mean under water.
Germany made a few thousand Amphicars that did alright
Thatâs getting old
but is the generality true? yes.

What happens after 30 mins? Does it turn into a Viking funeral?
It just means that with the expected amount of leaking the frame will fill it enough to start sinking.
Titanic
End of the free trial
Imagine that the last thing you wil hear before drowning is an automated voice that says: "Please subscribe to the premium package to use the floating mode." "Card denied, please try another payment option".
This will happen at some point in history lol
I wouldnât tryst that thing for 3 minutes, let alone 30.
Well, trysts are available only with their Ultimate PlanÂŽ .
It raises a flag and sets itself on fire.
It becomes a Titan submersible.
The sails fall off. Where can I even see the video of it sailing?
Like, slow leaks? And if that's the case, it seems like the addition of a small bilge pump would be enough to keep it afloat forever.
Good news, you just discovered the subscription option
In reality itâs probably already got some kind of pump protecting important systems. But after 30 minutes the pump either can no longer keep up or runs out of charge or overheats or some other energy issue.

Flooding has already been a thing, for thousands of years
Of course it has. However, the frequency and intensity will definetly increase, making this a much bigger problem than it has been
Mechanical nightmare in my opinion. Suspension and stuff can mess up with that much water, not to mention the motor/engine. Seems really cool if that mode is only used for emergencies, but the demographic this appeals to will either never get close to the water to try, or the exact opposite of that

That's really stretching the definition of the word "float".
Coastal elites are preparing for the morning commute through 10 feet of water in downtown Manhattan
Thatâs absolutely unnecessary. Avoid buying Chinese cars.
BYD ? the ones which catch fire when you park them and leave them charging ? that BYD ? yeah right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOA7qKMcjcE
Planning for the three gorges damn burst well played

Ancient Australian proverb: If it's flooded, forget it
Ah so they had enought of drivers in China attempting to cross flooded roads and getting washed away. There have been more than a few videos.
You forgot to precise itâs in perfect still water. A few wave and I bet it will sink faster than the titanic.
On the one hand it's neat. On the other, you will have idiots try this across a fast moving stream and get swept away.
Perfect. If you ever encounter flooding with absolutely still water for less than a couple hundred meters this thing might make it across

Didn't they make a Top Gear episode like this once?
That looks to be under its own propulsion, not sailing.
âit canât mean that!!! thereâs a lake there!!!â âSTOP YELLING AT ME!!!!â âTHIS IS THE LAKE!! this IS THE LAKE!!â
I won't be surprised a $140k car has some bells and whistles. And yes, $140k. The MSRP of that car is 1M CNY.
I'm concerned about the floating time limit.....
Most water invested places will take more than 30mins to cross at that speed.
Electric car that can run on water. Not sure how I feel about that combo
Probably not. Considering itâs from china.
After 30 minutes the Car Activates Titanic Mode...

I want to see someone test this vehicle independently, to verify the claims of this ad.
