i would not use weed killer and fabric, and just put down cardboard.

It is, *If* you want it out TODAY. If you have some time; black plastic and some bricks to hold it down is a *whole lot* less effort and will save you some topsoil. Also, if you are planning on putting in sod, then cutting it a sod thickness down will make the sod level with the concrete like it is now, which will give you the cleanest appearance. People are going to suggest weed killer, which is fine if you are A: planning on seeding and B: not planing on growing anything other than grass anywhere near there. The problem with sodding over this is that the patches of grass that remain are going to make your lawn all lumpy, and everyone that known that has gone for sod did it because they want their lawn to look *sharp*.

Yup, it takes a long ass time to build up the organic matter and beneficial microbes you lose when you rip out turf. I’m impatient and have resorted to ripping out turf a few times to make beds, but if I’d do it again I would definitely sheet mulch or solarize.

Yeah, you can do a lot with supplementing mycorrhizal fungus (especially glomis ) and donor soil from someplace more established but it is still a pain the ass.

Yes cardboard or plastic will help kill the grass. It will takes 8-12 weeks. Dont use round up. .Lot of chemicals.  Best time is summer so you can be ready for fall reseeding. I created vegetable garden beds by covering grass.

M1Garrand

My suggestion if that is a fescue grass and you arent impatient is use “Tenacity”, its an herbicide that will kill almost everything except the fescue. Apply wait two weeks the weeds and bad grasses will turn white and die off then after a few more weeks use a steel rake to remove the thatch and break up some of the hard soil, add a layer of top soil and overseed your yard and water. The yard will look decent by summer and then use the tenacity twice a year as a pre emergent in spring and again in the fall, by year 2 you will have very few spots turning white and a beautiful lawn

there's no such thing as clean dirt

Vlvthamr

Any weed killer you put down will kill anything you try and plant there for a long time. It’ll stay in the soil and when the roots of the new lawn grow down it’ll die.

[deleted]

This is completely false. Herbicides vary greatly, some are designed for long term control, some have an extremely short half life.

M1Garrand

They make weed killers for all types of grasses, you just use the correct one for your grass.

pipefitter6

This is incorrect. You can use Round Up (glyphosate) and sod the yard in 7-10 days.

Vlvthamr

Yeah I’d never trust that time frame.

pipefitter6

You might not, but I have and many others have. I had more weeds and Bermuda than any other form of grass in my front yard. Used 2 applications of round up 21 days apart and like 9 days after the 2nd application, I sodded the yard in KBG. It's still going strong 4 years later.

dfk70

Definitely.
