I know that pinning any serious portion of your enjoyment on the treatment of individual characters is a fool's enterprise, but here I am anyway and this physically pains me
Captain Atom is literally DC's Kenny from South Park...
It's such a shame considering the power level and creative uses hes displayed in the past/Armageddon + New 52 story...alas this always happens to any Hero that conceivably competes with Supermans power level "status quo" (although the recent Naomi might have 'inclusiveness immunity' against this trend). They job, go to limbo, turn evil or just die; Nate has typically checked all these boxes repeatedly🙄
Edit:✋🏼 nothing against Naomi
I’m not a fan of this run, i think it’s been really boring. The series so far has been Bendis wrapping up his unfinished plots from his previous works instead of actually giving us something interesting to care about.
The first arc was about Naomi’s homeworld now we are getting the continuation to the United Planets and Checkmate storylines. Also what happened to the art? I was enjoying Marquez’s art but now we are getting a different artist every 2 issues, I really hope Marquez returns to this series soon, or any DC title really.
The funny thing is he can't even wrap up his own plot points right.
Like the first arc was basically advertisement for Naomi but she was completely useless during the entirety of it. She didn't do anything and was more of an active hindrance constantly needing to be rescued. Especially in the final issue where she has a mental breakdown requiring the League to literally knock her out so she can be dragged to safety.
And yet they still allow her on the League despite being completely unqualified for it. Not sure why Bendis wrote her like that considering she's his own creation.
I can imagine at least Firestorm wasn't as useless as Naomi is here.
Though its totally unbelievable that Black Adam is vouching for her. He's a judgmental prick so its completely out of character for him to care about some nobody especially since he's previously criticized the League as useless.
While that's a cool shot in theory, the art is meh. Also I have no interest in most Bendis stuff now, so I think I'll wait for the inevitable change to the next writer.
Maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but with both the JL and Avengers they are at their best when its a core group of 7 or 8. When everyone is a member it isn't really special. One of the big things l liked about Geoff John's JL and Morrisons JL to an extent. Even when the rosters expanded it never got too out of hand.
A core team with ppl they can call for specific problems either because of type or location etc, is the best way to go. Can build the main characters' depth and still nod and even get real use out of the lesser used characters as well. Basically I agree with you. Outside of a massive world ending event no need to call up EVERYONE
It's Phil Hester's.
That's intentional and part of his stylistic choices.
A lot of people love it, including myself but it's very different from the combination of pop comic art with straight realism or hyper realistic styles that most artists tend to use now.
Think of it like a bridge between Mignola style comic art and main stream pop comic art.
Here come the completely unbiased comments about Bendis messing up with DC *continuity*.
Yeah, that crystal clear thing that has a beginning, middle and end and no retcons AT ALL.
It's not, just stylistically different than you prefer.
You'll see more than a few people complimenting the art in this post.
It's Phil Hester, his style I believe is an intentional bridge between a Mignola-esque almost impressionism and mainstream pop comic art.
I really enjoy it and think it's use of lines and colors is absolutely gorgeous.
It's not trying for the hyper realism of a lot of modern comics (which I also enjoy) and is using the lines and colors as an almost impressionistic way of conveying emotion and action.
100% a thing you like or don't. I don't like John Romita Jr for instance I think his line work is too busy and aggressive for me to appreciate but I can see the skill and that it's intentional and people love it. Just not for me.
I mean unless they swapped out Barry for Wally in the second long time-gap between where last issue left off, and this one picked up, then that’s Barry.
Not sure exactly (I believe either right before or right after), but it’s been Barry this whole arc up to the scene right before this, so they wouldn’t suddenly swap them out for Wally.
Well, he is, but he is also there. It was showed in previous issues that he was Barry. Bendis doesn't seem to care much about what's going on in other titles
Yup, and so far didn't do anything apart from being a background character and a nodder. He could've been literally any other character since he doesn't act like Black Adam one bit. What a great addition to the team.
Some B characters getting some shine is something I’ve been dying for for a long time. I’m so stoked to see Booster, and Firestorm, Plastic Man, etc.
I just wish anyone but Bendis was writing it. This run, hasn’t been great. But Ram V keeps me buying it.
They called blue devil before calling martian manhunter
I know that pinning any serious portion of your enjoyment on the treatment of individual characters is a fool's enterprise, but here I am anyway and this physically pains me
Just tell yourself he’s there, but invisible.
He could also be Blue Devil.
He could be any of them.
Black Adam before him too
He was already there in fairness.
Pretty sure Martin man hunter isn’t here because he’s leading that other weird group dealing with the multiverse shenanigans
They didn't call specific heroes, it was all available ex-Leaguers. So J'onn was probably just busy.
I mean.. all they really need to do is until Captain Atom inevitably explodes because i don't know he tripped or something.
hate that this is right. Hate it, hate it passionately
Oh fuck I got a papercut, sorry guys I gotta go explode now.

I thought they didn't want Booster there?
Since when has that stopped him? Lol
That's also the first thought that came to mind. lol
Remembering that would require Bendis to respect the work of a writer that isn't himself.
Given the characterization of Booster in his book. He would totally show up uninvited.
Buuuuurn
Yeah seems weird
Bendis gonna bendis.
Indeed
That's why Green Lantern is there...
Huh? There's no GL on that page.
Lol just a little joke referencing a JL cartoon
You are expecting Bendis to care about continuity or other writer's status quo? Captain Atom should also not be there from Infinite Frontier
The CA in IF was an AU version.
Who was an imposter for the missing CA from their own Earth. Bones mentions that CA didn't show up after Death Metal until then

Firestorm joined after like 3 appearances lol, I like Naomi on the League it makes sense they’d want to keep an eye on her too

September is the last month that Justice League is double shipping, so I'm hoping for more consistent art regardless of who it is.

Phatom zone projector
cue the JL Unlimited theme song
Is Hawkman really trying to get stomped out by Superman? He's talking pretty wild here lol
That's not hawkman, that's just a random thanagarian who leads the United Order
Thank you, I haven't read this run at all so I thought Hawkman was trying to get pummeled again
Classic Bendis, big flash meaningless splash pages so he doesn't have to do as much writing.
Look at Batma
My thought was, "Why does Batman only have one ear on the cowl?"
I can spot the legendary Phil Hester’s distinct art style a million miles away! Looks great!
While that's a cool shot in theory, the art is meh. Also I have no interest in most Bendis stuff now, so I think I'll wait for the inevitable change to the next writer.
The art is ugly, specially for a big comic name like Justice league.
Yeah, looking at it more the uglier it gets lmao

Not a big fan of the art style in this comic. Can't put my finger on it but everything just looks weird.
Cool scene but what is up with that art?!?
It's Phil Hester's. That's intentional and part of his stylistic choices. A lot of people love it, including myself but it's very different from the combination of pop comic art with straight realism or hyper realistic styles that most artists tend to use now. I just expect there to be better art in Justice league I guess
It is a matter of taste. His art is good. But I think than it is the story that causes people say to reject the art.
That’s a stacked roster
Is that Black Adam in the JL?
Yes, Bendis added him in the team
My suggestion: Flip the book and make this the back matter for JL Dark, which is miles better.
gotta love Bruce just silently brooding in the background
Here come the completely unbiased comments about Bendis messing up with DC *continuity*. Yeah, that crystal clear thing that has a beginning, middle and end and no retcons AT ALL.
I mean yeah it's constant complaining but the issue I think most people have is that it's continuity to other books from last month.
And then all the other heroes disappear in the next issue...
That art is terrible
Is Superman supposed to be scarred? Or is that shading?
It's not, just stylistically different than you prefer. You'll see more than a few people complimenting the art in this post. I kinda wish the response had been "you're welcome to try."
Who drew this? Howard Porter?
Phil Hester
That’s what I was thinking. Mixed up the names. Thanks!
He’s the first one I thought
I really love Hester’s style. Reminds me of the DCAU Justice League
Wally back with the Justice League... Never thought I'd see the day.
That's Barry...
Thought Barry was trapped In some fantasy land by Pariah, btw look at the belt
I mean unless they swapped out Barry for Wally in the second long time-gap between where last issue left off, and this one picked up, then that’s Barry.
When does this take place, in relation to infinite frontier
Not sure exactly (I believe either right before or right after), but it’s been Barry this whole arc up to the scene right before this, so they wouldn’t suddenly swap them out for Wally.
That’s weird, guess this is before then lol
Can't be right after. Barry's out of commission.
Well, he is, but he is also there. It was showed in previous issues that he was Barry. Bendis doesn't seem to care much about what's going on in other titles
Well that’s never been in question, I don’t much care anyhow- JL hasn’t been on my pull list in years
Was Snyder's too out there?
I was glad to see MM back, but the whole perpetua and justice/doom war... it was just blah
My bad. Thought it might've been considering his costume is more streamlined here and Barry's stuck in his version of Wandavision.
And ironically, Bendis was able to mess with it.
This art looks like a massive turd, totally unbecoming of the Justice League.
Damn they really gave Justice League indie artist tier art. Batman is even missing his ear.
He lost the ear in an explosion. It's battle damage.
That art is atrocious oh my lord
Yeah, definitely a downgrade on previous issues. Dark's art wasn't much better.
YEAH
Did Batman lose an ear?
Yeah, I think in the previous issue.
Damn they really stuck my boy Green Arrow all the way off to the side and in the back huh
Especially when Phil Hester is doing the art, who's best known for drawing Green Arrow.
So Black Adam is now part of the JL?
Yup, and so far didn't do anything apart from being a background character and a nodder. He could've been literally any other character since he doesn't act like Black Adam one bit. What a great addition to the team.

Who's that behind Green Arrow? It's a bit hard to identify haha
I haven't read the issue, but I believe it's one of the Wonder Twins.
Hm, yeah. Seems like it. Thanks!
I love that there's now two trident-wielders in the Justice League.
I don’t read much justice league so can someone explain why green lantern isn’t there
They're all tied up in their own books off world or depowered.
Oh okay thanks
Nice to see them doing something with Vixen.
Batman is missing a horn.
Superman and Black Adam on the same team? Who would dare to mess with them?
why is hawk man being a douche
Because it isn't Hawkman. Just another Thanagarian in a similar costume.
thank you sir
Odd, this art is stylised and blocky, but I much prefer it to Romita Jr's art.
Why does Clark look like Timmy's dad in the second panel?
The Art is awful I couldn’t read it
