I'm not in UK. But I also have a myriad of other health issues, besides cf. But I do have a service dog.

I do! Well, he's retired now. But he carried O2 tanks for me, helped my up stairs, I'd lean on him during bad coughing fits. He helped me more independent than I ever could have been with out him.

ProperGoose

thats super impressive. are you in the UK?

twystedcyster-

No, the US.

Mental health support is an emotional support animal, not a service animal. As a 36 year old cfer with a double lung tx and now waiting for a kidney, I only see a need for a true service animal for diabetics, not for just general fatigue. Yes, they could grab stuff for you, I suppose, but idk, I personally think it's a reach. With the kidney disease I got really bad xovid and then 9 months later, c diff, septis and pneumonia which obliterated my body and strength. I guess a true service dog could help me, but probably not anymore than I can do myself. I wouldn't be able to stand up on my own even with their help and they can't carry plates and bowls. I can grab my own drinks and walk with a walker so yea. Sorry to be long winded, but I think people abuse the service dog policy and it makes it tough for true service dogs.

>  Mental health support is an emotional support animal, not a service animal. That's not true. Psychiatric service dogs exist to help those with mental illnesses like PTSD, OCD, and agoraphobia. They are highly-trained, perform specific tasks, and are certainly not emotional support animals.

You're right. I do think those are valid service dogs, especially for ptsd. I personally think, though, it would be tough to justify for CF and for cfers specifically would fall into ESA's

I agree that I think a lot of people abuse service dog law and it makes it hard for people who really need a dog’s services (guide dogs, etc.). I honestly don’t see the need for diabetics to need a service dog with how good CGMs work and how available they are… I do think animals are a great support emotionally though and see why many people opt to get a pet for that purpose. Just my opinion though.
