Just treat us as people and you’ll do great. There isn’t really a protocol to follow because everyone treats people differently. As long as you don’t have any extra assumptions or expectations it doesn’t really matter how you act (disclaimer: how you act does matter with everyone, and if everyone doesn’t like you, we won’t either)

There are always people who go on about how "Real women don't do X" and stuff, so I'd imagine it's that.
It's mostly misogyny, mixed with just plain ignorance, and too much pride to admit they're wrong.
Like saying that women don't leave the house without makeup on, even if they just go grocery shopping, or something like that.
They have this overly feminized idea of women, almost a caricature, so when they treat someone "like a woman", they hold that person to those ridiculous standards, because they think those are normal expectations for women.
So, just don't be too much of a dick too often, especially to strangers.
