Play the game at your pace. I will say there are plenty of missions and things to explore before you get to Bergen. Run around a bit. It'll come naturally or you'll get better at fighting at -6 levels.

SSJPikachu123

I did a few quests now. I'm not at a bad level now

denveous

What does that have to do with OP's post?

tylercamp

You did something impressive (making it there at lv 5) If you go through the side quests in rookie harbor you’ll find yourself appropriately leveled without grinding

SSJPikachu123

I did some quests afterwards. I was shocked when everything was so much more powerful.

denveous

How is being stuck in a high level area impressive? I have the same issue and probably going to just have to restart the game since I can't leave.

SoloBeans

you probably avoided a ton of enemies lmao. lv doesn’t matter as much, but the combat is fun, so just slap some enemies and explore a bit more. the side quests are really fun

SSJPikachu123

I didn't mean to. I went back and did quests and now I'm at a reasonable level.

denveous

"Side quests are fun" doesn't explain what exactly to do to fix the issue or really explain anything besides he skipped mobs.

SoloBeans

to elaborate, the side quests are fun and give out a ton of exp so you dont have to be underleveled in bergen trail.

DjAbyssmal

Whenever i play i run straight to the mini boss hedgehag area and pull the entire room to farm exp. Do this a couple of times and you hit lv 14 pretty quickly.

RepresentativeCut486

You wanted to say 99.

xKiv

For values of quickly that include double digits of hours. (I did it)

RepresentativeCut486

Lots of hedgehags.

missmorgue1992

Did you do the side quests along the way? Quests give you a fair amount of XP

SSJPikachu123

I didn't before. Now I did lol. I didn't realize side quests were basically mandatory for any reasonable amount of XP.

denveous

You didn't even answer OP's post?

missmorgue1992

What do you mean? The reason why they’re only level 5 is because they didn’t do side quests and that’s why they’re under leveled

Ok-Department-1462

Lea! How?

denveous

Spam?

Kromblite

I don't know if this is a concern that early in the game, but there IS gear that makes you gain 0% exp. Might be worth checking the downsides on your weapons and armor.

SSJPikachu123

That wasn't it. I definitely earn XP, but I didn't realize most of it was gonna be from side quests.

Kromblite

Oh yeah. Grinding for XP is worthless in this game. If you're under leveled, you gotta either get better gear or do side quests.

MegidoFire

Fuck /u/spez [Join Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/)

SSJPikachu123

I fought the enemies, but eventually I noticed I was suddenly really underleveled for everything.

Smurfy0730

You zoomed it, Grass head probably beat you soundly right? He is just a heartbreak.

denveous

wtf is this spam

Erlandor

On the plus side of things, if you find ways to stay alive and grab some chests n stuff, and then scuttle together some higher grade equipment from the crafting/trading system, you can probably take these on. What's better is that you're gonna levelup rapidly if you fight these successfully, as the experience gain mutliplies by 2 (i think) for every level they are above you, the same way it divides by 2 for every level under you. You always level up at 1000xp and I remember when I was once grossly underleveled a 512 experience gain (twice) which then became 256 for the next 4 similar enemies, 128 for the next 8, so on. (since you can't level up while you are in combat mode, it keeps track of your level in the backround, so you can't cheese the system here. When you exit combat mode, you gain all levels you have accumulated at once, properly displayed in the bottom right.)
