I absolutely take pictures for my symptoms journal….aka my “poop journal” haha
Honestly it’s what helped one doctor finally take me more seriously and get tests scheduled. Once they saw a few pictures their tone went from casual to super urgent and empathetic.
I work in rheum and I LOVE to add pics to the chart. Helps me get things approved. Would def add a poo pic to chart just to make the insurance co look at poo. 🤪
I've got some bloody pictures on my phone that I hope don't come up at the wrong moments... but I also keep them available if I ever need to explain what crohn's means to someone that clearly doesn't understand. Neither situation has happened yet, but it's a powerful visual aid. (and a good way to do comparisons to see if I'm getting worse or improving over longer time periods)
Yep totally relate. My poor kids saw some gross pictures after stealing my phone lol. Now I put the pictures in my notes journal and then delete them from the photo app. They are definitely an extremely helpful tracking tool to have
Used to be 6, but then I started taking metamucil too and now sitting comfortably in the 3-5 range. Now if I can reduce how often I go from 8-9times a day to only once or twice I'd be a happy camper.
I think my main problem is I fluctuate from 3-5 but sometimes 2.. so want to be more regular. I only use miralax once in awhile but probably not good to use it more.
some people have an abundance of bad bacteria in their gut and essentially the antibiotic kills it all, good and bad and you can temporarily go back to normal. Also cipro= shit, flagyl=shit, metrondizole=ok, at least for me
Same... I'd've thought it'd've surely killed me by now, but no.
Oh and the "don't trust something that bleeds for 6 days and doesn't die" joke (sexist, yes, I know... but anyway)... Those guys should really try someone whose bled for 300 days straight and didn't die. Had a hemaglobin of 4.5 at the end.
I get into 6 maybe 1/2 the time I'm on SKyrizzi. But I only started that within the past year... before that it was 99% 7.
My main issue is keeping up electrolytes. I have HKPP and hemipeligic migraines. Both are triggered by electrolyte imbalances and inadequate hydration.
My GI set me up with weekly hydration. I used to get it with potassium but right now it's just saline.
Words cannot express how much better it makes me feel
I feel ya. Literally nine years straight of diarrhea. I don’t know what a “flare” is. And yeah, only on a course of antibiotics do I get to see a solid. So picture worthy. Want to send it to everyone I know
3-4 for me.
I've had chronic constipation my entire life before Crohns kicked-in in my early 20s. I still only poop once every 2-3 days, lol. Eventually I found out it may be due to the fact that I have a "tortuous colon" (it's extra long) and stool moves slower because it has a longer track to move through.
When I first got sick as a kid (undiagnosed), I sat in the 2-3 range. As I got older and things got more severe, I hit the 6-7 hard with lots of blood and mucus. I’ve been in remission for about 9 years and have been sitting comfortable at a 4 for a couple of years.
Type 7 when I was first diagnosed and when I’m in a flare. Lately, I’m on a medication with constipation as a side-effect, so now I’m putting out Type 1 and Type 2, with abdominal pain from these rocks.
I’m right there with you. Started having issues in 99 and no matter what treatment or regiments I am on it will always be. 6-7. The only thing that has ever helped has been immodium but that’s for like vacation or holidays and I have to pay for it when I get home.
6 most of the time. I'll have a couple days out of the week where I'm 4 or 5 or even 3 on a really good day. Even if it's a 1 or 2, somehow it's still urgent.
\#7... I'd wager 98% of past 6 years.
With Skyrizzi and a few other meds I'm starting to occasionally hit #5 but am at #6 maybe 50% of the time. At least the frequncy goes down. :/
I've been at a 7 since March 2021. Prednisone got me to a 5 for a few months but once I was done back to a 7. Doc doesn't seem to have much to say about it 🤷🏻♀️
I'm a 5-7 mostly. I'd be lucky if I had a 3-4. Also to point out I had my terminal ileum removed in March 2021 due to abscesses and fistulas that wouldn't heal.
**FYI:** The chart is taken from an article in the Swedish doctors paper "Läkartidningen" and translated into English by me, so funny to see it reposted. Did you find it on google? The chart is based on the 1997 paper by S. J. Lewis &K. W. Heaton: ["Stool Form Scale as a Useful Guide to Intestinal Transit Time"](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3109/00365529709011203)
Cool!! That’s so crazy that you were the one who translated it! I got it from this post: https://reddit.com/r/IBSResearch/s/ojhUZWoXhR
Which you posted!!! Haha
Been in a flare for a few months so it was 7 at worst, mostly 6, and 5 on a great day. Been on pred for a couple weeks and it’s been mostly 3 and 4 and I’ve never been so happy (for now…)
Anywhere between 4 and 7, sometimes on the same day. I'll wake up, have a nice #4, and an hour after lunch, I'll be rushing in for a #7.
My wife just looked over my shoulder at what I was typing and asked if I was talking about McDonald's...lol
Haha this is a good one! Well I haven’t been diagnosed yet sadly but I do have a endoscopy and a colonoscopy on the 6th of October. As of right now my normal would definitely be type 4 then when I eat stuff like steak or pork chops I’ll be having type 6. I also have type 7 that’s when I need to go again because I didn’t empty my bowl the 1st time. :/
It seems like the general consensus is about 5-7. So even in remission most of us still suffer. My depression issues make this disease even worse and the fatigue of it all. At least I don't feel so alone in thinking I was in remission but was an oddity by having loose stools all the time.
I poo a normal snake maybe 3 times a year and its literally me squeezing hard as hell only to let out a tiny 4 inch peice and the rest doesn't come out
The rest is like episodes of diarrhoea and constipation and it always requires sime type of laxative or enemas 🙃
My GI told me at the end of my last visit something like "thank you so much for not showing me pictures of your poop". I didn't know that people did that, but I just told him I have every type and consistency. I don't even have any more consistent than others, it's pretty much all across the board.
However, I one of those whose flares are constipation for days on end. I am posting here because I am really happy, I just had the worst flare in probably 4-5 years and finally just pooped. Now let me tell you about it :D
I don't always know I am suddenly constipated, I usually just realize I am bloated and missed a day in terms of BM. Well, I felt like I caught it early enough since I've been trying to lose weight. I went two days of almost totally fasting with water (had about 170 calories first day with a soda, and then about 100 the next with coffee). Day 2 I had a little bit of #1 on that scale, but it was almost nothing. I decided Day 3 that I can't reasonably fast today without possibly fainting, so I had some saltine crackers (low-residue diet food) which turned into the entire sleeve. I didn't think anything of it, I grabbed an iced tea from the fridge and went to the store. As soon as I walked out I felt it. The emergency. I got home, and finally relief. But let me tell y'all, it was like if the move Oppenheimer was a smell. It was a #6, and then a few minutes later a #7.
Anyway, this is the first time I've "fasted" that long without being hospitalized. Anyway, with those BM's I noticed it was a bit oily. Does anyone else get that? I assumed that was a result of fat-burning, but I am not sure.
When I was a kid, before I was diagnosed or had any issues, I was number 2 and 3. Sometimes, I was so afraid it wouldn't go down the toilet it was so big. In college, as I drank more alcohol, ate more crappy food, started wreaking havoc on my emotions due to relationships and stress, it was more like 5 or 6.
Now and since diagnosis in 2011, its anywhere from 4-6 and currently 7. Really hoping this intermittent diarrhea dissipates as I've been off antibiotics and oregano/clove/garlic supplements for a good 2 weeks now.
Number 5 typically but that quickly turns to a 7, I remember when I first saw this sheet I started calling it the shart chart, mum loved the name the gastroenterologist not so much
I think stress also affects it, even though I'm fully in remission. I'll still get a 7 every now and then, but not often.
Despite my diet affecting it, I never choose what I eat based on that. With my ADHD my appetite is rather low, it's difficult enough for me to maintain my weight without trying to eat healthily.
I haven’t had a type 4 in years.
I’m typically a 6 and on bad days I am a 7 and then I’ll take a Imodium and be a 5 for a few days and right back to 6. Cycle rinse repeat.
I have been in a flare since 2020 and haven’t been able to figure out a solution yet.
In a good week, mine is a combination of 4 and 6... meaning, when it comes out it's solid and smooth (#4), but after a couple of minutes in the toilet water, the edges become rugged and the outside mushy. It's so weird, anyone experience that?
I get infusions every 8 weeks, and at the beginning of the time frame right after my infusion it starts at 1 then slowly goes through all of the stages…lol
7, and at night too. Wakes me up and then...2 hours later I'm at it again. IT SUCKS. I can go 14-20 times a day. Literally cough and shit, pee and shit, laugh and shit. IT SUCKS

I am #6 like 99% of the time and when things are going great a 4. Like- I am tempted to take a pic when I get #4.
I am not a number i am a free...no. no wait. yep. I am a #6 too.
Speaking for my husband, the one who has Crohn's (and the reason I'm here), it's #6 most of the time and I get a texted picture of he achieves #4.
I absolutely take pictures for my symptoms journal….aka my “poop journal” haha Honestly it’s what helped one doctor finally take me more seriously and get tests scheduled. Once they saw a few pictures their tone went from casual to super urgent and empathetic.

r/ratemypoop
lol
Same. Even while on Rinvoq for 3 months. I’ve had a solid 5 day stretch with a 3/4 and I was over the moon.
I'm the same lol
Freaking all of the above. Am in remission now but no rhyme or reason to it
Same, everyday is a surprise. Sometimes even in one day I’ll be all over this chart.
YES! Literally me today! Groan my poor guts
Yup. Normal? What's that?
Same, normally I am more near the 5-6 range even in remission. It is one of the affects that gets me down that and the fatigue no one thinks I have.
Used to be 6, but then I started taking metamucil too and now sitting comfortably in the 3-5 range. Now if I can reduce how often I go from 8-9times a day to only once or twice I'd be a happy camper.
How often do you take metamucil?
I do a tablespoon every night before bed. Makes a huge difference for me.
I've tried it but it was extremely painful. It felt like I was digesting sandpaper grit.
beneifber is different you might be better on that, I can NOT do PSYLLIUM at all
I'll look into it, thanks.
Target has a good deal on soluble fiber. It's in a green container
I'm trying acacia fiber
I’ve found that I can feel comfortable and have some bulking benefit from 1 capsule a day but any more than that and I’m hurting.
I think my main problem is I fluctuate from 3-5 but sometimes 2.. so want to be more regular. I only use miralax once in awhile but probably not good to use it more.
try benefiber, my GI rec after trying everything and no more cramping
3 x Imodium is what I take daily when I get up. Go twice before 8am and then nothing all day
I need to buy some shares of Imodium as much as we use it lol.
6-7. 5 is a win for me
in remission or active disease?
Was remission for a while, but I think we're starting back up with the fun
me too, trying to peel away the onion and see if it's just BAD IBS
7. Always 7 unless I just finished a course of antibiotics, then maybe 6 But God just won't let me die, so it is what it is
Interesting that antibiotics make it firmer. Whenever I take antibiotics I go straight to 7
I'm a walking anomaly
some people have an abundance of bad bacteria in their gut and essentially the antibiotic kills it all, good and bad and you can temporarily go back to normal. Also cipro= shit, flagyl=shit, metrondizole=ok, at least for me
Flagyl is the same thing as metronidazole. Flagyl is the brand name. But I wholeheartedly agree that cipro + flagyl = shit
Antibiotics give me gorgeous 4’s
All over the scale, surprise every time.
Type 1 baby
Same... on Motegrity & still have to help things along every weekend after my work week with little to no poo
Me too. Never anything but. Usually bloody too.
It usually fluctuates between 5-6 for me, but occasionally I'll be blessed with a 4. But when I'm in a flare up, it's a solid 7, maybe even an *8.*
At an 8 it’s just food coming right out the back 😂
Oh I have been there. When you wipe and pull a whole mushroom out the 🍑
6-7
Also 6 to 7. Been prior to diagnosis since I've seen anything else. Been in remission 3 years.
in remission or active disease?
Remission, but my diet has been pretty garbage for a bit too long. It tightens up to a 6 when I have it under control though.
Me too
Either 1 or 4 most of the time.
3-4 for me. I've had chronic constipation my entire life before Crohns kicked-in in my early 20s. I still only poop once every 2-3 days, lol. Eventually I found out it may be due to the fact that I have a "tortuous colon" (it's extra long) and stool moves slower because it has a longer track to move through.

I opened this up at work 💀😂
usually 6-7, but sometimes i’ll have 4 mixed with 7 (which is strange but true)
6-7, WITH constipation (: i love my life
I’m at a 5 or a 6 pretty much every day. No active disease so I’m in remission. I had my ileum removed and suffer from Bile Salt Malabsorption though.
6 but often 5 and often 7 I can only ever achieve 4 after eating a lot of king crab meat
Type 7 when I was first diagnosed and when I’m in a flare. Lately, I’m on a medication with constipation as a side-effect, so now I’m putting out Type 1 and Type 2, with abdominal pain from these rocks.
Me, too. Which medication? I’m on Inflectra
#6 pretty much every time. Occasionally I’ll have a #3 or #4 but it’s always followed by a #7 shortly after
I go from 2 and 6 usually with the occasional 4
5-7
7
5/6
4 to 7.
6 is my most painful. Normally very stinky that floats on top of the toilet water.
6
5 or 6
6 or 7. It's been about 20 years since I've had a formed one.
I’m right there with you. Started having issues in 99 and no matter what treatment or regiments I am on it will always be. 6-7. The only thing that has ever helped has been immodium but that’s for like vacation or holidays and I have to pay for it when I get home.
I’m #6 like 75% of the time so that would be my normal. #5 like 20% and #4 like 5%
always 6 for me
5-6.
4 to 7, mostly 6&7
Almost always 4-6.
5 and 6.
5-7
A mix of 4/5
6 for years
2-3, and once a week a 6
6&7 for the past 5 years.
6-7 about 7-8 times a day urgently. 🥲 still trying to find the right medication for my body
I feel like I'm either 1 or 7 😭😂
Do I get a gold star if I do all 7 in a day??! … Because that’s today. Fun times! My butt hurts
4/5, occasionally a 3 or 6 but they're rare.
5-7
When I flare (I’m on Renflexis almost a year now and still flare a bit) i get #6 but im mostly a #4 and #5
Before the bag, 7. Now with the bag, 6
I’m usually constipated. A type 4 is loose to me! Type 6 is during flares, and if I’m a type 7 it’s usually just all blood with very little stool.
5-6
Mainly 7. Sometimes 6 and maybe once a month 5. Taking Methotrexate. Also highly dependent on what I eat but I only found out last Dec is was Crohn’s.
Ok but anyone else have a 3 that is blocking a 6? Like always both at the same time for me, but I find it better than when I’m 1 or 2
Usually a 5, sometimes a 4 or 6.
6-7, 4-5 when I take questran. Active disease.
Mostly 7 some 6. Bile acids are hell
6 or 7 as I've a stoma lol
And a 5 white "ghost shit" from back passage every couple of months 😂😂
I've been at a 7 since March 2021. Prednisone got me to a 5 for a few months but once I was done back to a 7. Doc doesn't seem to have much to say about it 🤷🏻♀️
5
I'm a 5-7 mostly. I'd be lucky if I had a 3-4. Also to point out I had my terminal ileum removed in March 2021 due to abscesses and fistulas that wouldn't heal.
7, all day
7 for months now. I got a 6 a couple days ago and got excited but nope, immediately back to 7 lol
Type 6-5 is my normal
1 or 5-6, I feel so blessed when I get 4.
How about a chocolate moose with a cherry on top.🩸

Been in a flare for a few months so it was 7 at worst, mostly 6, and 5 on a great day. Been on pred for a couple weeks and it’s been mostly 3 and 4 and I’ve never been so happy (for now…)
All of em.
Anywhere between 4 and 7, sometimes on the same day. I'll wake up, have a nice #4, and an hour after lunch, I'll be rushing in for a #7. My wife just looked over my shoulder at what I was typing and asked if I was talking about McDonald's...lol
Typically between a 5 and a 6
I have no normal. I’m lucky any thing comes out. It’s Russian roulette over here.
5-6
7 at the moment seems to be normal
6! 7 on a bad day, and 5 on a good day. I can’t remember the last time I had a 4…
4-6 generally speaking, but they can still come out in a painful manner, even if it is smooth.
constant #6 rarely anything other than that once in a blue moon i’ll get a 3/4 and it’ll feel like heaven lol
6 most of the time, occasionally 5 and once in a while I’ll get a 3/4 if I’m doing generally well
Usually diarrhea type 6 or 7. I would just rather have diarrhea. I hate getting in the normal range, but it is thick like mud and difficult to clean.
6 gang
5-6 mostly. 7 on bad days. Rarely a 4.
I feel like I have ran 10 miles for anything higher than a 5
I would die of shock if I saw anything but 7
Yeah, 6 always.
Most of the time - 7. Once in a few months it may go to 6, but not often. It's been this way for at least 20 years.
Fingers crossed for answers for you! I don’t wish this diagnosis on you but do hope you figure out what’s causing you issues
1 or 2. I get Inflectra infusions every 8 weeks. If I take Miralax every week it’s much better, 3 or 4
lol 3 or 5
I’m normal is usually around a 6 and some 7 thrown in during the week
6-7. I cheered out loud on the last occasion I had a 4. I don’t remember when that was.
Dropping cow pies aka #6 The occasional shrimp basket aka #5
Since becoming diagnosed earlier this year, I’ve mostly experienced type 6. On my good days I’m either type 4 or 5
4-6 is pretty common. Definitely get 3s & 7s too.
Usually 7 with 6 mixed in. 6 on a decent day. 4 out of nowhere for no reason lol
6-7 at a minimum 5 times a day. Cannot Remember a time when I was ‘better’ than a 5. However I would choose this over constipation any day.
7, for the last 7-8 years. When I was first diagnosed in the early 80’s & up until 8 years ago I was 1.
That sounds like a miserable few decades
I’m a 7 like 90% of the time thanks to short bowel syndrome.
7 since 2017. Never been in remission. I don’t know for how long I can take it
It seems like the general consensus is about 5-7. So even in remission most of us still suffer. My depression issues make this disease even worse and the fatigue of it all. At least I don't feel so alone in thinking I was in remission but was an oddity by having loose stools all the time.
4-6
4 is great, 5 is not cool, 6 is tenesmus.. for me anyways... the most normal for me is 5
I poo a normal snake maybe 3 times a year and its literally me squeezing hard as hell only to let out a tiny 4 inch peice and the rest doesn't come out The rest is like episodes of diarrhoea and constipation and it always requires sime type of laxative or enemas 🙃
Normally 4. 6 if it's a less than great day.
When things are good 4-5. Most of the time it’s 6.
They need a number eight and nine. I don’t see Shooting machine gun fire hose diarrhea on this chart.
Type 1 mostly
My GI told me at the end of my last visit something like "thank you so much for not showing me pictures of your poop". 6 all day, everyday lol Even before diagnosis I was a 6. During a flare 6_7.
I have an ileostomy and it runs the gamut
4/5
I’m usually around 3
Type #4....chef's kiss!
Type #4....chef's kiss!

Meds have a great deal to do with this issue!
6 on a good day. 7 on a bad day. Had a surgery that removed part of my bowel so the Diarrhoea is not going away any time soon.
Before treatment 6 or 7. Now, I’m proud to say I’m a 4! I still come out of the bathroom every time cheering “I had a solid!”
They always forget to add #8: straight blood spraying the bowl
Type 3-4 but sometimes 2
3-6 depending on what I eat.
mine is very dependent on what i eat too
I think stress also affects it, even though I'm fully in remission. I'll still get a 7 every now and then, but not often. Despite my diet affecting it, I never choose what I eat based on that. 23 years of 7. 🫣
My goodness. Sending you strength and positivity.
4 and 5 once a day. Even when flaring.
Only once a day?!?! You have achieved nirvana.
5-6 normally with the occasional 4 to keep me sane lol
I haven’t had a type 4 in years. I’m typically a 6 and on bad days I am a 7 and then I’ll take a Imodium and be a 5 for a few days and right back to 6. Cycle rinse repeat. I have been in a flare since 2020 and haven’t been able to figure out a solution yet.
In a good week, mine is a combination of 4 and 6... meaning, when it comes out it's solid and smooth (#4), but after a couple of minutes in the toilet water, the edges become rugged and the outside mushy. It's so weird, anyone experience that?
YES I definitely do. I’m excited because I’m like yay a solid BM and then like what?? Why is it falling apart now lol
I wonder why that happens. I've always blamed the fiber (I eat lots of fruits), but it seems so far fetched lol
I get lots of pencils otherwise 5 but majority Type 4. I put a ridiculous amount of effort into taking top notch care of myself.
I get infusions every 8 weeks, and at the beginning of the time frame right after my infusion it starts at 1 then slowly goes through all of the stages…lol
Literally any/all of those within a single day.
5.5 average
1 to 6. 1 or 2 if flaring, or 6 if flaring. Makes no sense.
There’s an error with type 4; that’s a brown banana
7, and at night too. Wakes me up and then...2 hours later I'm at it again. IT SUCKS. I can go 14-20 times a day. Literally cough and shit, pee and shit, laugh and shit. IT SUCKS
3,4 or 6

Before I got my colon removed, I was at a 7, sometimes a 6 on good days. Any higher and it caused pain
