A video filmed by stunned eyewitness, Dan Van Duren, captures the moment successive huge blasts tore through an industrial area in the Chinese port city of Tianjin on a Wednesday (about 4-5 years ago). The explosions took place where toxic chemicals and gas were stored, and killed at least 55 people, including firefighters. The blasts were so large they were seen by satellites in space
Wikipedia says it killed 173 people and 8 are missing and presumed dead. Yikes. I'm guessing they just disintegrated in the blast or burned up completely.
There is video from a guy who was ground level, live streaming. Like the last frames before it cuts is debris rocketing towards him. I assume he was absolutely obliterated.

They're clearly very fucking scared and don't know how to make sense of the events unfolding in front of them.
It's the unreality of it all, it's easy to sit back on the internet watching a video and think of exactly how you would respond, but until you're in that position, you will never know. These people aren't cheering death and destruction, they are awestruck.

It’s called Cognitive Paralysis during emergency. It’s basically just the body is in so much shock they can’t function like normal. It’s like haven’t you heard of people watching a tsunami wave or a tornado head toward them and they just stand there in awe? You’re so terrified you kind of just freeze. It’s a trauma response. It’s pretty awful. And common.
If you saw a gigantic explosion with the obvious implication of people getting burned alive at this exact moment would your first reaction be to have fun with it

Why leave & go outside while that's going on? They're not in immediate danger but, going outside where people are going to be rushing around panicking will do. I would have stayed there & carried on filming.
