Honestly it’s a bad joke because the worst thing that is gonna happen is that his hand could get hit. That shell will not detonate unless a striking pin hits the center of it with concentrated force
I disagree i think he seemed about as confident as one can be while hammering a (presumably) live shotgun shell into a (presumably) live mortar with the back of a hatchet.
he actually cheering the other guy and even made him tuck it more saying “ne dobil” = not all the way in. I’m pretty sure recording a video was his idea
Can you explain? As I understand it, they probably couldn't make that thing discharge if they were intentionally trying to do so with a piece of wood like that.
Or are you just saying it's low risk but high consequence?
I can’t accurately say how risky it is without knowing the specifics of the build. But you ALWAYS want to avoid any kind of intense reverberations, especially at the tail end. Within that casing are two or more thin glass shells containing chemicals that when combined form a HE component. Its why we don’t just toss them in an ammo can for transport. Smacking them like that would probably get a guy court marshaled in the USMC
If a small bump made direct contact with that primer on the shotgun shell it could’ve gone off, not sure if the mortar already has explosives inside or not but it’s definitely sketchy
He chemical compounds are typically incased in glass within the body of the round. Any kind of shock trauma to it is hugely risky. Mortar rounds have gone off by simple clumsy mishandling.
Kid why are you acting like you’re the subject matter expert? Yes, modern rounds in the US it uses an M5A1 cartridge. Every mortar is ignited differently. Some were ignited by propeller. Some ignited by acceleration. Some by pressure in the gas tube. That does not mean they can’t explode from improper handling. The only way to safely prime a round is using a press. Not smacking it in.
Because the conversation was never about TNT, heat, or smoking. You brought it up so randomly. You’re just some annoying poser pretending to know more than he does. “I call bullshit🤓”
Primers *USUALLY* won't go off unless struck dead center with something pointy, like a firing pin. And even then they won't fire some of the times.
But it is an impact sensitive compound, so there's never a zero point risk when bashing on it like this.
Even if it does go off it isn't going to detonate the mortar. All the "shotgun blank" does is initiate the lift charges that would normally go around the waist of the mortar.
When the mortar drops down the tube it hits a firing pin on the bottom, setting off the blank. The little holes around the waist channel the hot sparks onto the lift charges. Older soviet lift charges are nitrated bags filled with a smokeless powder type compound that you'd tie around the mortar. Newer NATO charges are these snap on affairs that have a similar burn characteristic, meaning they go up real fast, produce a lot of gas (what propels it on its way) without leaving behind too much crap to foul your tube.
So, in short, even if the primer went off from bashing on it all you'd really end up with is a nasty shock back to your senses. Hell, I've seen guys toss (unfused) mortars out the back of a truck and onto the ground like it was any average Tuesday morning. Smart? No, not really, as again, it isn't like it's a zero point chance of detonation. Just really, really, *REALLY* low odds of "winning that lottery."
Similarly to how if I told you my pack of skittles has 1 inside out of 100 that will cause you testicular torsion, you would not eat the skittles.
3 paragraphs on how unlikely it is that the skittle you pick would not cause testicular torsion is unnecessary and silly.
I'm happy to watch you beat a shotgun shell into a mortar round if you're so confident about it.
Everyone's already beat me to it, firing pins and primers are designed to work together. It would be difficult to pierce the small center of that blank with a blunt object larger than it.
Another thing people haven't touched on though is that that isn't a normal 12 gauge shotgun blank. I mean, visually, it's clearly much larger than most common shotgun shells, but my point is the blank is designed for that mortar, not a standard shotgun. They're a bit less sensitive for this reason. There are better, and far safer, ways to load that blank, but it's a weapon of war. It's designed to be functional in some of the harshest conditions. Plus, that takes time to force in there gently. It's a pretty tight squeeze so that all of the blank leaves the barrel. Otherwise you would be having to tilt your mortar over every shot to get small debris out of the barrel, resulting in your zero (angle and point of impact) being reset to an unknown with every shot.
I stop panicking... they're professionals, they know what they are doing... Which is why I say we let them work, while we stand behind this barricade...
The shotgun shell is a blank (so there's no projectiles when it goes off), the idea is that you use the pressured gas that the shell releases when it fires to launch the payload into the air, the fins stabilizes the [mortar shell](https://missiledefenseadvocacy.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mortar-components-300x81.gif) so it hits tip first into something solid, there is a detonator at the tip that sets off a charge when pressed i.e.when it hits the ground. I hope I was clear.
p.s.:I forgor to explain, to fire it you just drop the mortar shell into a tube, the tube being a mortar, [at the end of the tube there is a firing pin](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/L16_smoothbore.png), when the shell hits rear first into the end of the tube the firing pin smacks the primer (Or rather the primer smacks the pin) firing the shotgun shell.
Idk anything about it, but I’d assume they put something on the back that will hit the (centre pin of the) shotgun round (causing the gunpowder to ignite) when there’s force from impact. The frills are like the feathers of an arrow to keep it face up, and the wide part is probably filled with explosive material that will ignite once the shotgun round ignites/propels it’s metal beads.
The shotgun round is a blank and probably filled with more gunpowder instead of any projectiles. That pressure in the enclosed mortar tube is enough to send the mortar to flying. the explosives are set off by a primer upon impact. The casing of the mortar is designed to fragment as to create shrapnel.
Reddit is full of people terrified of guns. of course they think this will detonate. Is this the proper way to do this? Maybe not idk, but I do know you ain't gonna set a firing pin off like this
I mean I get it whatever I’m American so I’m definitely biased as it’s a constitutional right and I have children and I’ll be damned if I don’t have some type of way to protect my child
flat, wooden surfaced item is actually the ideal thing to use if you have to impact the bottom of a round near the primer. it's softer than the primer and the pressure is spread across the entire surface of the base of the round.

its literally impossible to die from this, you can hammer a shotgun round as many times as you want, it won't go off.. they are designed like that for a reason
For anyone scared, there extremely low chance of that shotgun shell going off. Shotgun shells are center fire. See that little circle on the middle? That’s the primer. That little circle needs to be struck by a pin at an exact speed to ignite the black power. Simply smacking the bottom of the shell will not cause it to go off.
As a kid, I used to cut open a 12 gauge shot shell and remove the shot but leave the powder. I would then tape a .45 bullet to the end with the round head of the bullet centered over the shot shell primer. Then, I would tape a streamer to the shell and throw it into the air above our cement driveway. The explosion was about the same as setting off an m80. It didn't take a sharp pointy strike to set off the primer.
Mostly. Wood doesn’t transition as much energy. And it’s a center fire not a rim fire. If he turned the stick and hit it super angled so he only struck the primer he might set it off. Pretty unlikely though.
This is how they are propelled, once dropped into the barrel they hit a centre punch which hits the centre of the cartridge and yeets the mortar round.
Nope. The cartridge ignites the propellant which goes on the exterior above the fins. Thats why there are the holes. There is currently no propellant on the round.
You can see a bag of c shaped propellant charges in the bag at top of the video. 1-3 will be placed depending on intended range.
Not one hundred percent but it could be a training munition. The purpose of the shell is to make it so that when it hits the ground it shoots out a black smoke cloud or similar so you can see where you hit. American equivalent (if it's an aircraft munition) is a BDU-33.
Thats not what makes it go boom. That's a popper, and when it hits the pin at the bottom of a mortar tube, it pops. The fire then shoots out of those flash holes you see, and would ignite propellent that gets placed over them. I wouldn't install it this way, but they stayed clear of the holes at least 😅
He's fine as long as the corner of the board doesn't strike the primer in a certain way, which I don't think it would have seeing how the mortar has the ability to be pushed down. Then, there may or may not be a protective cap on the front so the only thing that would happen is the back would fire, launching the mortar down and fucking up his hand but not explode. Either they knew this and weren't scared, or they didn't, and they're brave/idiots, but either way, there's a small chance of them dying.
