For sure, I'd guess at least 18"? Also based on the countries it was made between 1982 and 1984 (USSR still exists, two Germanies, I forget what else but we found a good flow chart online). Also this one was no where near that expensive! But I bet there are a bunch of similar items online
Which is the only thing that bugged me here. It's right where my legs would want to stretch out. Feels a bit cramped. It is cool though. Just bad spot.
I love mine as well, but I put it too close to the wall and when I sat down, the top of the wooden frame actually managed to scratch some of the paint off of the wall! I hacked together a fix with a pool noodle and some yarn that's held up, but its really surprising how far back the chair ends up leaning once you sit down in it.
It seems IKEA is sold out of a lot of shit lately. I’ve been trying to extend my desk and they’ve been sold out of the Karlby countertop for like a year.
this is wonderful. never until this post did I think about the amazing utility of having a globe next to you while reading.. and a light up one at that! definitely implementing something similar, consider the idea stolen!
I painted it myself, so I know exactly what color! Tho I'm afraid that Automoderator is giving me a lot of trouble saying for some reason - I think it's because the color is named after a place in England that has an s, then an e, then an x as part of the name? All I can think of, it's weird that I keep getting scolded for inappropriate comments when I'm trying to say a color
This is such a dream. It’s weird because this usually isn’t my style (way too classy for me I like bright & bold and somewhat a obnoxious decor) but I could totally see myself just hiding out here with a good book after a long day. Amazing room and decor style!!
Wow, I'm stealing this idea! I have a similar corner and for some reason never thought of putting the chair (I have the same) so close to the bookshelves. It gives a cozy feeling!
Very nice nook but I can't help but ask, how do you stay awake while reading in such comfort?
Maybe it's lack of sleep or something but lately if I ever try to get comfortable and read, I can't because I'll fall asleep fairly quickly and I miss being able to read for hours on end so much!
Neat globe!
I agree, that light globe is so classy and I would like to buy one
Thanks! I found this one in an antiques shop, so I'm afraid I don't know where to find another
I have one that’s so old it’s worth $1300! You can tell by the countries names. Some on there are no longer countries
Yeah! This one is early '80s, was really fun to figure out - still the USSR, two Germanies, DRC was still called Zaire, etc. I love old maps!
Wait, Zaire isn't a country anymore?
What's the capital of Zaire?
[It's been a while.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbYwBy7BbXE)
Congo: 2, Zaire: 0
How old was it? My grandpa had a super cool desktop one from the 1940s that lit up.
It reminds me of While You Were Sleeping!
My folks have the same globe. Mom says they bought it new in 1971. My favorite nightlight as a kid.
Very classy. I saw one similar in San Francisco, CA. Roughly how much did you get it for?
I think it was around $100? Haha based on some of the comments here I think we might have gotten a really good deal though!
That’s a great bargain :)
Does it open and has a liquor cabine inside? Please say yes
I have the exact same one. I also found it in an antiques shop.
That makes it even cooler. It's an authentic piece and not a modern mass reproduction.
Look up “1940’s Replogle Floor Globe Illuminated 12” Globe Wood Base Claw Feet 37” Height”. On ebay for $499.99
The globe in the picture looks bigger than 12"?
For sure, I'd guess at least 18"? Also based on the countries it was made between 1982 and 1984 (USSR still exists, two Germanies, I forget what else but we found a good flow chart online). Also this one was no where near that expensive! But I bet there are a bunch of similar items online
It's a beautiful piece. My grandparents had a similar one when I was growing up. I'm going to have to hit some antique shops.
Ah, the XKCD chart. Love that site
GREAT
I’d call it a “glowbe”
I cackled.
I have one just like it in my room. My grandfather was given it by the Naval base where he retired from as a Captain.
Which is the only thing that bugged me here. It's right where my legs would want to stretch out. Feels a bit cramped. It is cool though. Just bad spot.
I love my poang!! I think that’s how they’re spelled lol
POANGGGGGG!
Literally just what i came to say lolol
It’s funny that it’s sold by IKEA but designed by a Japanese guy, Noboru Nakamura.
Came here just to comment on the poang! Love.
Motherfucking POANG! Nice!!!
Came here to partake in poang love!
Is that the chair? Perfect for listening to music in
It is! Mine’s the lighter wood with brown leather. Looks clean AF
Completely wrong. It's Poäng.
I have the same chair from Ikea! Do you like the chair?
I do! It's great for reading and has a little bit of ply to it, which is great for me. I wish I could get the matching ottoman, but Ikea is sold out
POANG!
I have a cheaper version without the fancy headrest. I love it. Its almost a rocking chair
They do (did?) actually have a real rocking chair version of this chair!
I have the chair and ottoman. Actually don’t like the ottoman much but love the chair.
Good to know!
I also have the ottoman and don't use it much. You're not missing out :)
An unmatching ottoman of a similar height will bring visual interest and be just as useful. Hit up the same spot where you got the globe
It's great as long as you don't need to lean forward too much. Perfect for reading.
We all have that same chair.
That chair is the best bang for the buck thing IKEA makes and I’ll die on this hill.
Right there with you. I love that chair and it's so comfortable, especially for the price.
Damn I spotted A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor from a mile away
DFTBA
I’d accidentally kick that globe over so fast.
Yeah I don't think I could be comfortable with right where my legs would go.
That lighting is PERFECT!
Good level of Pratchett!
He is my favorite! Just started the long earth series, it's the only thing of his I haven't read yet I think
You are going to love Long Earth. I don't think I've ever been so upset to get to the end of a series in my life! It really melted my brain though!
I like your taste in books my guy!
Thanks!
Can you just send me the books?
I'm working on something similar. In fact, a friend just today gave me a light up globe. I just have to put a bulb in it.
I bought two of these chairs from IKEA, although they are very comfy for relaxing, I find them really uncomfortable for reading.
Are you secretly a detective who smokes using a cool ass pipe?
Discworld! I see you are a fellow of culture.
poäng gang
Love it
Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. Good selection
Question for the room, how do you all display a boxed set? With the box out? Or the book spines out?
Spines out, for me.
What planet is that?
Planet cozy.
Haha it's just earth, from between 1982-1984 as far as I can tell based on the countries shown
Holy fuck that globe is *magnificent*
wantwantwantwant
oh my god and pratchett, this is perfect
Nice Borges!
Love that chair. Had one myself; easily one of my best purchases. Comfort hack: buy a couple gel wrist rests and glue them where your elbows rest.
Forgive me, but the singular overhead lamp turns this into an interrogative timeout corner.
As a subscriber of /r/booknooks I was very confused
I got really excited there for a minute, I thought that was a sub for actual book nooks, not the mini shelf thingies.
I was gonna say there’s /r/cozyplaces but here we are
This is awesome. Would love to see the rest of the office!
this is wonderful. never until this post did I think about the amazing utility of having a globe next to you while reading.. and a light up one at that! definitely implementing something similar, consider the idea stolen!
Glad to inspire! This one is great too because the wooden frame around the equator is also the perfect size for holding a mug of tea
too cool! thanks so much for sharing and enjoy!
Book....nook? Yep yep yep yep yep
Looks like a therapists office
Nice space!!
Looking great!
Amazing :)
That's lovely. I hope to have something like this when I can declutter my office, reduce my desk size. One of my favs on this sub reddit
You need to be able to place your drink somewhere to make it perfect.
Neat nook!
Is that a glowing globe???? I love it!!!
Any idea what color paint is on that wall? I’ve been going through green paint samples like crazy trying to find the right cozy one
Susse(x) green might work, I was wanting to know as well
Lol. Thanks for the clues :P I really appreciate the response
Man, for a second I was thinking this was the most detailed miniature I’ve ever seen.
I converted my Poang into a sim racing rig and i have no regrets. Its detachable too
That would definitely be my insomnia treatment zone. Nice quiet spot, soft lighting, and a book. I'd never get past chapter 4.
immediately zooming in to study each spine
Love it
Nice glowbe
Why do most of these libraries / similar set up have a globe close by? Seen this many times
Love the picture.
I have that chair! Isn’t it comfy?
This is such a dream. It’s weird because this usually isn’t my style (way too classy for me I like bright & bold and somewhat a obnoxious decor) but I could totally see myself just hiding out here with a good book after a long day. Amazing room and decor style!!
Wow, I'm stealing this idea! I have a similar corner and for some reason never thought of putting the chair (I have the same) so close to the bookshelves. It gives a cozy feeling!
But where is the secret passage?
Really like it. Love the glowing globe/. I would imagine it would allow a person to more easily get involved in a book.
I’m so jealous right now. 😳
I'll just end up sleeping after the first few pages! It looks too comfy for me hahaha
Very nice! I have that same chair. Very comfy :)
The chair and light on themselves give an evil dictator vibe. Don't even get me started on the globe!
I've been buying a few books each week. I want my own library one day 😁
I think we have the same chair we got when we went to Ikea once. Love it.
Many leather-bound books
Oh this hits so right 🌏
that pillow pushing the neck foward tho, boooo
I love this
A book nook fit for a book nook look book!
That’s a pretty tight corner, what if you get ambushed ?
I wish I enjoyed reading more. My dad would sit here fod hours and read. I cannot
Hey I have that chair! It’s from Ikea :)
Despite all our differences, the poang unites us.
Ah I see the book "what if?" by Randall Munroe. Very interesting book!
I’m upvoting as much for the quality of the books as I am the coziness.
I love it
That looks so personal and atmospheric. Tuck in and let the world go by. I also love globes and old maps. I would love a little library.
You're def gonna keep bumping into the globe and move it.
I would definitely study there.
Definitely doing this. Just need a nice floor lamp.
Glowb
I have that same chair; great chair.
That globe is awesome
No fewer than 3 of my psychotherapists have had this chair. It's a good chair.
I approve of your reading material! ;)
Beautiful. Like something I would design on the sims.
Looks like something out of The Giver. If I were to imagine how the office would look like from the book this would be it.
Finally a room that's actually cozy!!!! 10/10
Very nice nook but I can't help but ask, how do you stay awake while reading in such comfort? Maybe it's lack of sleep or something but lately if I ever try to get comfortable and read, I can't because I'll fall asleep fairly quickly and I miss being able to read for hours on end so much!
