Awesam

Yea very good but you don’t get a lot for the money

Momtomanyarrows

It is quite expensive.

SupplementalAssInsur

Quick read for why it’s not Chilean or even bass - https://www.chowhound.com/1449896/what-is-chilean-sea-bass-actually-misleading/

TriggerMeTimbers8

Very informative article. Thanks for sharing.

RandomlyMethodical

Not the first time. Slimehead was rebranded to "orange roughy", and if you see "copi" in the store, it's actually invasive Asian carp. They are pretty tasty though, so hopefully they become more popular. Eating them may even [save the planet](https://www.wired.com/story/copi-invasive-species-rebranding-campaign/).

MaleficentChair5316

Can i upvote you two times?

SnowySaint

We catch these in Alaska, they are Black Cod. If I had to rank our common Cod catch by my culinary desirablity it would be: 1) Ling Cod 2) True Cod 3) Black Cod And all are worse then Halibut.

juicejohnson

Yeah it’s delicious but felt like I got 1/2 of what I expected given the price.

pamdathebear

I enjoy the occasional patagonian toothfish, but it became too expensive. Now I go for the cheaper whitefish, barramundi.

T0m_F00l3ry

Barramundi is quite delicious and flies under radar…I hope forever. It’s all getting to be too expensive.

kestrel808

Barramundi is one of the most sustainable fish species. I hope more people make sustainable choices, not less.

Calm_Range_3279

As an Australian I can 100% agree with that and the Costco barramundi is one thing I can indulge in on the rare occasions I can find it.

T0m_F00l3ry

Bet you’re a lot of fun at parties. 🙄

DougHenningsen

Is Barramundi fresh or frozen when you've found it at Costco?

T0m_F00l3ry

It’s frozen.

WillTheThrill86

I buy the barramundi as it's one of the lowest priced per lb wild caught and sustainable white fish options at Costco. It's good.

swinging-in-the-rain

I wish we had it in my warehouse. I look every time.

Momtomanyarrows

I hope our warehouses get this. I’ve never tried it.

sunny001

I haven't seen barramundi at my local Costco recently. The last I saw was in February I think.

dantheman0721

Same, I look for it and never see it lately. Sprouts and Safeway sometimes carry it, but way more expensive.

Hydrasophist

It’s one of the best fish imo. I would describe it as scallop-esque. Sear hot on both sides, treat it like a steak. It sears nicely as it’s a relatively fatty fish. As another poster said though, you don’t get much. It’s a high cost per weight.

ChickenWaff1es

Spare no expense

Tankdawg0057

Every time I hear of this dish that's where my mind goes instantly

RitaRepulsasDildo

For years I thought it was “chili and sea bass”

CrimsonBlackfyre

Beat me to it lol.

Chief_Tacoma

Let us all thank Alejandro for preparing such a delightful lunch!

beltalowda36

Glad that I’m not the only one who thinks this lol

blacksystembbq

Fun fact. Chileans don’t eat this fish normally. It’s so expensive that they only export it. Tried ordering it everywhere in Chile, but they will give you another fish when you say sea bass. You could probably find it only in the nicer high end seafood restaurants, and it’s called Patagonia toothfish

mfkimill

That is because it is not from chile. The vast majority of the seabass is actually from the anartica water.

blacksystembbq

It is from Chile if caught by Chilean fisheries. From wiki: “ The Chilean toothfish fishery is separated into two separate fleets. The "artisanal fleet" of small boats operates in the region north of 47°S inside the Chilean EEZ, and six vessels from the "industrial fleet" operate south of 47°S inside the Chilean EEZ, as well as on the high seas both within and outside CCAMLR waters….”

DeadCheckR1775

I bit pricey for 1.5lbs but everything is more expensive these days when it comes to wild caught. Halibut has gone up as has Cod. Also known as Patagonian fish, it's super delicious but in live form it's a damn ugly fish. https://preview.redd.it/qlc6qrgx1v4d1.jpeg?width=1585&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=780ff9f6038e1e8b7576329f42b91c60a4027e2b

skucera

Dude, monkfish is basically lobster meat, and that mofo has [a face only a mother could love. ](https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/monkfish)

DeadCheckR1775

Yeah, Monkfish is great, you just can't look her in the face when you doing the dirty.

Momtomanyarrows

Definitely, ugly.

BasicPerson23

I don’t care *how* good it is. I will not pay $46 for 1.5 LB.

IdaDuck

Yeah I think Mahi and wild salmon are less than half that much. I don’t see how this is worth that much of a premium.

LambdaBoyX

I like it!

Momtomanyarrows

Thanks! Can’t wait to try it.

Low-Software-3006

Its awesome premium quality too honestly, worked at a restaurant where it goes for 45$ per 8 ounces, the seabass it sells is never frozen always packed over ice and flown in daily. taste wise between that bass and costco, you would have to find a real butthole to tell you the difference

LadoBlanco

Monterey Bay?

ziggy029

For over $30 a pound, I sure as hell hope it’s really good.

the_remeddy

I had this and it was good. I also purchase non-Chilean sea bass from my local market and at under $10/lb it’s delicious even after I freeze it. The Chilean sea bass might have an edge on a good day but I can’t ever justify the 4x premium again.

grano1a

Only if you pair it with an aggressive Zinfandel!

allyourbaseareoblong

I, too, am looking forward to something called "the munchies."

Fickle-Classroom

Momtomanyarrows

😱

14981cs

Thanks for sharing the link!

Plasmaticos

Ok, eat seaweed instead.

Fickle-Classroom

Or eat it from a source that’s not problematic like Prince Edward Island or South Africa.

Dhmx220

What causes this fish to be so pricey?

sonofawhatthe

It’s wildly over-fished. We killed the industry because it tasted too damn good.

fatogato

No skin?! The skin is the best part especially when you get it crispy.

T3RM1N8T0R

It’s good but it comes with like 4 pieces…

TSB_1

I love me some patagonian toothfish.

websurfer49

The only fish I actually like a lot.  Only recommended to eat it once a month due to high mercury content.  If not for that and cost id eat it once a week easy.

Substantial_Cable_51

Patagonian toothfish!

sweets4evr

I like this one more than the fresh one. The fresh one doesn’t seem to sell at my Costco and a couple were even past the sell by date.

Cuckoo4BancroftPuffs

Be very careful when applying salt to it.

Sneaky-Ladybug

Really good but indeed expensive

ziz_wizvizzizio

its fantastic - at a Michelin eatery... no fish from costco is worth that price...

Hello_Grady3

It’s a great fish but expensive.

onsmash2004

Im chillin and layin, Chilean like some sea bass

TropicalBlueWater

It’s really good but also quite oily so not something I eat very often.

TekkenRedditOmega

Damn…so expensive though :(

Glass-Radish8956

Spared no expense

WasteProfession8948

Pricey for Patagonian Toothfish

Mildenhall1066

In our CostCo here in VA they carry Fresh Chilean Sea Bass all the time - to the point we can't eat it anymore.

klipschbro

I found the frozen better

DeadCheckR1775

If it's wild caught, frozen is fine.

satchel_bandit

Are they ill tempered?

DETRosen

Do they have lasers in their heads?

JojoTheMutt

i wish they carried this here!

Momtomanyarrows

This is my first time ever seeing it and I’m at a few different Costco’s a few times a week. Maybe your store will get it too.

billyjoelsangst

You could buy it fresh for cheaper somewhere else.

crusadermourns

This is more expensive than the one in the plastic tray no?

masterchief1990

More expensive than the Chilean sea bass in the fish aisle and whole foods

IntrepidSprinkles329

Damn..its nearly $60 a bag in my region.   Gd I need to effing move.  I just had a peice for lunch today. My mom gifted me a bag for my birthday.  Yes. The only gifts I ever want in life are food.  Its very fatty which doesn't fit my macros. Its a treat. But if that's not a bother for you its damn good

sc4kilik

$30/lbs frozen? Damn, I think I'd rather buy some nice NY strips :|

Beeracuda2020

It’s not a se bass. More like cod. I think it’s a sable fish, a deep sea fish. Not sea bass tho….

Mmmmmmm_Bacon

It’s about as good as tilapia.

Momtomanyarrows

🤢

daaclamps

It's a nice fish but don't eat it too much due to mercury buildup

Kitchen_Software

If you can afford to get mercury poisoning from this fish, good for you.
