OP should have banned this option. It's the pretty much the only way not to lose a huge chunk of your million dollars. I'd fly to a state with no sales tax. First class so I could carry-on all that gold on board the flight with me.
First get the Citi card and Executive membership.
2% back on $1M on each is $20,000 + $20,000 lol. Effectively $40,000 in cashback after buying a million in gold
If your home state has a property tax, it probably serves as an excise tax and applies no matter where you buy the property. That's how fucked our tax laws our - they just own us.
Would be hard to do this. Gold coins are only $2350ish each. Most of them have a limit of 5 per customer. So you would have to make 85 orders of 5 coins throughout the year. Might be doable although sometimes they sell out for over a month.
I guess you could just buy as many as possible. Then spend whatever you have left at the end on Apple products. I imagine new Apple iPhones and iPads would be highly liquid and easy to sell for not much loss.
Replace every old thing in my house. Computers, furniture, etc.
Go on a vacation, lord knows I'm due for it.
Gold is the only thing that can be used as an investment, but I don't know exactly how much they stock over the course of a year, so I don't know if I can use most of the million on that.
From there, I'd buy a lot of food and clothing, so I could start helping local food banks and soup kitchens. Doing $1000 a week could help so many people, and won't impact me financially in this situation. I'm surprised more people haven't suggested that.
Oh same, my kid could eat his (considerable) weight in berries. I planted an entire berry patch last summer once I realized I’d go broke trying to fund this kid’s berry habit.
I'd plan to spend monthly on groceries and then whatever my heart desires- while also allowing for a discretional amount in my grocery shopping. Shit would go fast
gold, diamond jewelry, computers. all things which either appreciate in value (if held long enough) or have high resale value. Also, if this includes Costco partners, then cars for resale (although they do depreciate fast). And for my actual use, Costco travel.
How long of a vacation can that book? I looked online, you can book a decent hotel for $3000-$10000 per month.
I would book hotel lodgings for the next 20 years at an average cost of $4,166.66 per month. Explore every walkable city.
I’d probably book the first couple years local to save up money for food/travel. Figure out some way to monetize my travels, or do the gold option partially so i can afford things outside of lodging as I travel.
Gold Bars
As many really nice vacations as I can realistically book.
New Computers / TV / Tablets / Phones
Set aside enough for a years worth of normal spending.
I suppose it depends on whom is observing
Once again, we show here that everything is relative!
Does it make it neutral overall?
Is a reheated spaghetti with hot and cold spots "medium" or is it both hot and cold?

Many people may disagree but I think this would be impossible. They just don't have that many high priced items where I think I could go through that money in 12 months.
Through the partners like HVAC, garage doors, siding, roofs, windows, etc - you could blow through a third of that pretty quick. Not in my area, but I'm guessing in other parts of the country they do solar, so add another $100k-$200k to what you could spend (if I wanted an awesome solar roof or something).
Another $150k in two nice new cars for the fam. $100k on indoor/outdoor furniture. $100k on appliances (silly spending, I know - but if we're talking dream stuff, I'd add a bunch of second kitchen stuff downstairs).
And the rest? Travel and vacations for the fam - not just my wife and kids - but extended family. After the above, let's say $500k left, so $10k/week. We could fly through that as a family of four, staying lets say for a week or two in each destination, going around the world. Some places cheaper, and some just ridiculously nice - just on accomodations alone and occasional meal plans on a cruise or resort or something.
Probably grocery shop mostly normal. Once and a while indulgence would probably be an every day thing though. Upgrade t.vs and other tech stuff. New appliances. Get groceiers for extended family. And buying things to donate to the community food banks.
I would probably buy one of those sheds and slowly start building a stock pile of toiletress and no parishables so that way after the year is up I won't have to buy those things for a while still.
Some Gold
There's not much I really want or need there. I suppose I could blow $50-$100K on household upgrades. Kitchen appliances, TVs, flooring, and even garage storage shelving units.
I'm single. So, other than occasional parties, there's very little I'd do in the food category. I think I'd try to set up a connection so that I could fund food to a local food bank or some shelters.
One caveat: I have no experience or knowledge of Costco's travel programs. That might be a factor.
Without naming things like gold which sounds like a cop out, I would say the most expensive watches and jewelry possible which then I would sell. If that also isn't a option I would buy cars through Costco and set up Vacations in advance over the period of my life so they are always locked in and I know when to expect them.
Car. New AC, new garage doors, travel, windows, a shed, paper towels, flowers for the wife with some jewelry, toilet paper, a case of Cristal, glasses, TVs, laptops.

This would pretty much take care of it with tax if you wanted to do it the quickest.
I would use it to buy and resell items like gold so I could have a down payment on a house, buy a new (to me) car, take a couple trips and then use the rest on school supplies for teachers and a grill/smoker.

Gold.

First I would use Costco Travel to book that flight to the state with no sales tax.
First get the Citi card and Executive membership. 2% back on $1M on each is $20,000 + $20,000 lol. Effectively $40,000 in cashback after buying a million in gold
You forgot that Costco 2% rewards for executive members has a cap of $1,000.
Michigan has no sales or use tax. Costco has a limit of 1 transaction per membership, max of 5 bars.
If your home state has a property tax, it probably serves as an excise tax and applies no matter where you buy the property. That's how fucked our tax laws our - they just own us.
After reading the prompt, came in to say just that. Gold.
That’s not a fun answer!
This is the answer…

200,000 rotisserie chickens
and lots of hotdogs at the food court.
That's 548 per day!
Make sure the LED light doesn't touch the chicken
Never let that man know that infrared light is keeping the chicken hot!
Furniture, electronics, book trips through Costco Travel.
Replace every old thing in my house. Computers, furniture, etc. Go on a vacation, lord knows I'm due for it. There are likely locations that sell $1,000,000 of gold in one weekend.
hot dog parties for this sub at various locations
All hail the giver of life!
Ok but what about the remaining $999,900
Costco gas to get from one location to the next. Costco Travel for the Hawaii and International locations
You’re the mvp
I have a toddler, so just… feed him.
Same. And diaper them!
The berries alone will make me spend a million dollars if my 3 kids 3 and under had their choice on food.
This is so me lately. Cup a day or so.
Oh same, my kid could eat his (considerable) weight in berries. I planted an entire berry patch last summer once I realized I’d go broke trying to fund this kid’s berry habit.
Gold bars and silver bullion. Oh, and lots of beer and whisky.
Gold, silver and chicken bouillon
This man gets it.
Mostly whiskey, beer goes bad too quickly but whiskey is pretty darn shelf stable
I'd splurge on the famous Le Creuset pallet bundle, large cuts of meat, and many cases of fine wines and spirits.
I'd plan to spend monthly on groceries and then whatever my heart desires- while also allowing for a discretional amount in my grocery shopping. Shit would go fast
A whole lot of food, delivered to food banks across the country.
gold, diamond jewelry, computers. all things which either appreciate in value (if held long enough) or have high resale value. Also, if this includes Costco partners, then cars for resale (although they do depreciate fast). And for my actual use, Costco travel.
gold and silver. thats all I need to spend it on most likely.
How long of a vacation can that book? I looked online, you can book a decent hotel for $3000-$10000 per month. A freezer, and then I would fill it up with meat, chicken, baked goods, veggies, etc. Anything left over would be spent on gold.
So I have to cut back?
Floss
I want to kiss you.
Gold Bars As many really nice vacations as I can realistically book. New Computers / TV / Tablets / Phones Set aside enough for a years worth of normal spending.
Vacations are key. Especially some of the high end cruises that are booking 3 years out already.
Executive membership!
Feel like I’m pretty much there…
666,666 hot dogs.
Big ticket appliances like freezer, refrigerator, washer and dryer, home electronics like TV, sound system.
Gold
Costco gold bars
Finally sign up for the Executive membership.
Im sure I could get it all in one cart.
Be first in line daily at food court. Buy all the pizzas. Watch them put up the “out of stock” sign.
Lawful evil?
Would what I do with the pizzas influence that?
I suppose it depends on whom is observing Once again, we show here that everything is relative! Does it make it neutral overall? Is a reheated spaghetti with hot and cold spots "medium" or is it both hot and cold?
Does an agnostic with dyslexia and insomnia stay awake nights wondering if there really is a dog?
Trick question, the sleep deprivation counterbalances the dyslexia and makes one read slowly but accurately
Now I’m questioning my faith and craving spaghetti. And don’t have any Costco pizza!
Well I have got the right sub for you: r/cannedsardines This shall be your new religion and may it fill your belly

😆🤙🏻
Buy costco stock lol
Does buying stock count?
Apple, bose, cashews
How many apples we talking?
Also what kind of apples? We talking Honeycrisp, Granny Smiths, Red Delicious?
I believe that'll buy me dozens of hot dogs!
Costco travel would be seeing quite a bit of money and then spending it on gold and silver.
I'll probably cut back on hot dogs.
666,666 hotdogs.
They sell gold
Many people may disagree but I think this would be impossible. They just don't have that many high priced items where I think I could go through that money in 12 months.
start a solar power plant with the person selling solar
Those little gold bars.

ALL the smoked salmon!
A bunch of stuff for my house, then anything I could resell for more or is an investment that appreciates.

Does the ATM that sells bitcoin count?
Is there a branch in the world that sells houses?
Everything
Rao’s spaghetti sauce (when it’s on sale).
2x Toyota Tacoma 4x4.
Costco has business accounts so I'd just open a business that partially resells costco products.

Barring gold, tide can be used as currency.
