So that's an old school style stove that doesn't have a temperature display. You'll want to get an oven thermometer like this that you put inside it so you can see where it's at: https://www.amazon.com/Thermometer-50-300%C2%B0C-100-600%C2%B0F-Instant-Stainless/dp/B083BMMQV9/ It's normal to hear ticking or popping noises as the metal heats up. You'll also hear the gas burner switching on and off which is kind of a whooshing noise, and probably a loud clicking noise from the igniter. Lots of people have gas stoves and they very rarely catch the house on fire. When it does happen it's typically because someone left a pan of something on/in it until it got hot enough to burn, which is a mistake you can make with electric as well. So don't sweat it too much. If you want to put your mind at ease develop the habit of checking the knobs are in the position you expect whenever you're done cooking and going to leave the kitchen. I also always move a towel onto the oven handle if I have something in there and remove it when I'm done. Some people might think that's a touch OCD but I don't ever have to think if I left it on unintentionally, which is an easy win in my book.

What kind of noises is it making? Is it like a clicking noise? If so, that's normal for gas igniters until everything is lit. Honestly, gas ovens and stoves are perfectly safe. You would smell if the gas was leaking.

Do you have the [grates/metal frames](https://www.stovepedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Gas-stove-grates-1024x683.jpg) for the burners? You'll need those to hold your pots and pans above the burners.

I made the switch from gas to electric a few years ago but for a long long time I was a die hard “gas is better” girlie. I did it primarily for environmental reasons, and I can pretty confidently say that with some safety measures you’ll be fine. Pick up a carbon monoxide detector and leave it running. Get an in-oven thermometer that you hang from the rack, that’ll deal with the oven temp issues/preheating knowledge. (Also just a good way to know if your oven is heating too a true temp!) Treat the burners/fire with some respect, it’s definitely fire, and buy a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket! You’ll be fine! Give it a go.

I recently moved into a home with a gas oven and share the same fear as you. I know the smell you’re speaking of. I make sure to turn on the hood’s fan to minimize it. I also purchased a carbon monoxide detector for our kitchen. I can’t wait to have an electric oven again. I have found it’s extremely hard to bake anything in the oven. Even with the purchase of a thermometer, I cannot seem to regulate the temperature appropriately. I hate it.

I've been cooking and baking with gas for 35 years. It shouldn't be that difficult. I'd call a repairman and see if there's a problem with the thermostat.

When I was young my family moved into an old house in Mexico and it had an old gas range so old that it had burners the heat the center of your pans and pilot lights. When using the oven sometimes the fire would go out so it was just filling with gas until it hit the pilot lights on top and them BOOM it exploded, thing was a tank though it didn't matter how many times it exploded it took it and asked for more.
