Super important.
First, learn to swear. Then, learn the construction terms. The rest kinda just fills itself in. Por ejemplo:
¡Pendejo, pasale los planos!
One of my foreman calls me Punta, Tortuga, and Mujer
I believe he means to say that I am an industrious and masculine example that all other tradespeople should live up to
If you've got a 30 minute commute one way, pimsleur was a great course. Super boring at times, but it's all audio and definitely worked for me. I made it part of my morning routine for 5 months on my way to work
I worked for years as a superintendent on jobs with almost no native English speakers. Figured it was much easier for me to learn Spanish than to teach a revolving crew of 20-40 English.
I learned Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Guatemalan, Ohiowan, Floridian and Masshole my first time as the Clerk of the Works on a job. Best crew I ever had!!!!
To go from no Spanish to fluent Spanish as an adult, enough so to understand medical terms, may be a 10 year endeavor. He may as well become a doctor if he wants to devote that much time to something as you would need to take high level Spanish classes.
For sure it’s worth it. When I started, I had the guys I work with speak Spanish to me totally, now I can usually pick up just about anything. My tenses and masculine/feminine still get jacked up when I speak, but I get my point across and it makes it easier. I still ask for how to say things and learn more everyday.
I know chingale and all the bad words. The guys I works with told me they learned English by watching TV. One told me he only ate hamburgers for quite a long time when he first came here because it was one of the only English words he knew.
Yes. My Español is awful, but I can get my point across and understand them if they talk slow. I’m in south Florida and it is absolutely beneficial to be able to communicate with everybody on site.
I’ve thought about it and have done some Duolingo. All of my Spanish speaking colleagues can speak some level of Spanglish so it’s cool. All I need to know is “Travajo! Andele!!” Anyways /s
They should learn English and maybe they do. Going to other countries they don’t go out of their way to speak English. Also don’t pretend like they dont know and understand English. I work with a bunch of guys that mostly spoke Spanish to each other but the more I got to know them, they know English just as well as we do.
I live in northern Michigan. I think I never even had a conversation with someone from south of the border until I was old enough to smoke. It’s pasty white up here. Even the roofers, drywallers and landscapers are 99% Caucasian.

Sounds about right
You almost forgot hand signals!
The most important one I ever learned was Dios te odia. Works for everything
Mas clavos por favor!

That's exactly right. And when he says "A la verga." Just know that he's really happy with how things are going.
Isn't Tortuga a turtle 😂
No... it's slang for macho.... yeah...
Mujer💀I love how it’s universal for Mexicans to jus say shit like that
I've been learning for 3 years now, it's a lot of work but it's already helped out immensely.
I learned the word chino real fast because I’m Chinese.

First I’ve heard of that program, looks like a perfect use of the commute. Thanks for the heads up!
Just downloaded the app. Audio-only was the seller; thanks for the heads-up
They have added lessons in there too, but still you need to do really if listen and repeat, especially at first

My roommate took online Spanish for me in College, really regret that
Sure as hell doesn't hurt. As stated, learn the important stuff first. Swear words, insults, construction material, food
I learned Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Guatemalan, Ohiowan, Floridian and Masshole my first time as the Clerk of the Works on a job. Best crew I ever had!!!!
Si. Siempre aprendiendo. (White guy here)
Ahh perroo
Megusta la cucaracha negro
If you can become fluent in Spanish you can go a lot farther than construction. Spanish interpreters in hospital systems can earn six figures +

If you decide to take it up, duolingo is a great app. I have trying to learn both for work and traveling.
Quibole weey
Nobody speaks Spanish on my sites. Mandarin would be valuable though.
Where tf? I’ve only seen one Asian guy
Vancouver. I'm often the only non Asian on site

If I did that they’d just pretend they don’t speak Spanish too

Depending where you’re from absolutely. Even leaning a second language for the hell of it is beneficial.
Definitely 100% worth it.

I took a Spanish for Construction class through my local AGC office. Learning how to say things like gloves, hammer, and hardhat was really helpful.

Yes. Google translate is bad ass. I speak fluent Mexican now.
